Chapter 30 – Checkmate of Silent Night

Calista turned around to see all the queens from each region standing behind her. She needed this, the show of support and defiance of Tethys’ rule to complete the battle. Calista whirled back around to face Tethys, whose face held an expression of pure terror.

As she approached Tethys, the reigning queen fell on her knees in defeat. Calista’s blood trailed on the floor behind her, but she did not allow her injuries to interfere with her determination. She reached Tethys and walked behind her. Bending over, she clutched Tethys’ head in her hands. She summoned all her rage and screamed as she wrapped one hand around the former queen’s neck. She dug her fingernails into Tethys’ flesh, tensed the muscles in her hand, and ripped out her throat. As blood rushed from Tethys, the dead queen slumped to the floor.

Cheers filled the arena, and Calista looked up at Ecthelion. As soon as her gaze landed on him, her guard entered the Royal Box and attacked, leaving the former King dead almost instantaneously and the box painted crimson.

Jergen walked into the arena and over to his queen. He clasped her hand and raised it above their heads in victory. The merfolk still seated in the colosseum stood and bowed. They then exited their seats, and shortly after, flooded the arena floor.

“All hail Queen Calista!” Jergen shouted to the crowd. Each merfolk bent at the knee and lowered their heads.

“All hail King Jergen, who rules under me,” Calista said, careful not to yet reveal his new position of mate. When her subjects were ready, she would announce the removal of “sub” in his title.

Jergen smiled at her, taking his cue to step back so she could begin her reign.

Bloodied and beaten, Calista examined her new subjects, who eagerly awaited her to speak. She ran her tongue over her lips, and exhilaration filled her veins. She had won. Finally. Now, time for her to rule.

“Great Kingdom of Merfolk, this is a new era for us all. I promised you change, and we will change, starting now. We have spent far too long losing our kind to the humans. We can no longer continue on our path and suffer more death. And there is where we will start to rewrite our futures as merfolk.”

“All hail Queen Calista!” Jergen shouted.

The crowd repeated the words, turning it into a chant. She allowed them to lavish praise upon her before raising a hand to silence them.

Continuing, she said, “I know you are all eager to understand my plan for our kind. We will no longer be challenged by humans. We will cease to be casualties in a war we did not want.”

A collective shout of approval went up from the audience.

“We will forgo attacking humankind in the same manner that we have done for centuries, only to lose more of our species. These tactics have not worked in our history, nor will they continue. We must change now to save all merfolk. Until we have dealt with our battles against the humans, we will not be able to perfect our glorious kingdom in the ocean.”

More calls for approval roused the audience into a frenzy of claps, with some yelling, “All hail Queen Calista!”

She waited for the crowd to quiet before her lips twisted into a malevolent smile. “My father spoke many times of pulling back our attacks on the humans. He made me believe this was the best course of action. When I watched my father die at the hands of the humans as he tried to save three Hai Ho Shang, I knew he was wrong. We will no longer tolerate their desire to dominate our world. Not now, not ever again.”

Calista shot a glance at Jergen, her reigning King, who grinned at her. He nodded, providing her everything she needed to continue.

“In two cycles, we attack. We attack with the fury of a thousand vengeances. We attack with the power of our deceased kind – every one of them who lost their life to a human. We attack like we’ve never attacked before.”

Her subjects rallied to her call for the blood of humans, propelling uncontrollable power throughout her core. Adrenaline rushing, she had never felt more formidable, more convinced of her cause.

“And,” she said, “we do not stop until we kill them all.”
