His ten fingers? Gone.
One ear? Long gone. I left the second ear on for communication purposes.
I even plucked out an eye.
He looked like a better villain now.
His one remaining eye rolled.
“You don’t get to pass out, Alpha,” I said gently, slapping him hard across the face until his eye fluttered open again.
“We’re not done. Not by a long shot.”
I said, picking up a hammer with a bright smile on my face.
The hammer felt heavier than it should. Maybe it was the blood still dripping from my hands that made it so. Or maybe it was the weight of everything else.
“Can I tell you a secret?” I asked, turning the hammer in my hand.
My voice sounded so strange and hollow. I swear it wasn’t mine anymore.
He blinked slowly, like he was trying to stay conscious just to avoid something worse.
He was weak and halfway to death.
“She’s pregnant. My mate. We’re expecting a baby… Did you know?” I asked, and the look in his eyes told me all I needed to know. “Oh. You all knew. And yet…” I scoffed and shook my head.
The hammer clanged onto the table. I couldn’t even hold it anymore. My hands were shaking with emptiness.
“You know what’s funny?” I asked, staring at my blood-covered fingers like I was trying to remember what they looked like before all this. “I was trying so hard to protect her. Did everything. Blocked her phone. Watched her like a fucking hawk. I even killed for her… But you still managed to get her. I failed in the end, didn’t I?”
I turned back to him. The fucker didn’t even have the strength to show emotions anymore. But that was fine. I didn’t need to see his emotions. Just his agony.
I picked up the hammer again, raised it slowly, and looked him in the eye.
“Say hi to your gods for me.”
KESTER.
“Send part of his remains to Karina,” I had muttered, still picking dried blood off my kntickles like lint. “Tell her it’s a peace offering from me. Rehab can be lonely. Might as well remind her that the world still sees her.”
“Wrap up the balance of his meat. Send it to his pack members. The Blood Crescent pack has never received a gift from their Alpha. Let me be the first to give them one.”
I had instructed my men before stepping out.
I checked the time, and I was still on schedule. I planned on spending just two hours with Wes, and I kept to it.
Now, I had somewhere else to be.
But not before I drowned in the exciting scene playing out before me. Because this moment right here? Worth every second.
There was no need to step out of my car. I had already stepped out once, and that was like ten minutes ago, before everything went up in flames… I mean… Literal burning flames licking the sky and curling like fingers of the devil himself.
Sirens blared from outside – emergency units trying to play hero.
People ran for shelter and safety.
News reporters were already on ground. Fuck. Those guys don’t mind getting roasted in the fire just to catch history in real-time.
The fire kept getting bigger, starting from the top and eating its way down like a starving beast.
People were running and screaming, some dragging others, some on their knees, sobbing, begging to whatever god they believed in.
And I?
I sat in my car like a fucking spectator in a VIP box. Front row. Prime view.
Firefighters showed up late, as always, pumping God knows what into the inferno, hoping to beat a fire that was never meant to be beaten.
I massaged my temple with one hand while the other hand rested casually on the stirring. The splitting headache from three hours ago had refused to go. But it was totally fine. I needed more pain than normalcy right now.
What, was that gasoline the firefighters kept pumping into the building?
I laughed so hard my ribs hurt. Why the fuck was the fire climbing higher in response, as if feeding on my madness? Jeez. Even the universe knew that Kex’s judgment day was today.
I watched with sick amusement and satisfaction how Kex’s company went up in flames. The flames I set.
And when it was all over, I turned on the ignition and drove off.
My next stop would be at the bunker. I already had the blueprint of what June’s death should look like, and I was more than excited to execute it.
NARRATOR’S POV.
The sound of the engine died just a distance away from the small, deserted bunker. It was dead in the night, and the only viable light was the one the half moon in the sky provided. Not so bright at all.
Four men stepped out of the car, and just as planned, they got busy.
They split into the woods in different ilirections, but all heading to the same destination The Bunker,
It all happened so fast that i was hard to tell if the guarde guarding the place were first pathetic, or if the man storming the hunter werd simply teste good at what they did.
The men didn’t come to kill. No. They just knocked the guards out for a while.
The leader of the group stepped into the bunker, and the moment he saw her, he froze.
She looked so pale and pathetic. Not that he expected anything less. But above all, he felt numb. Almost as if he were looking at a total stranger wins was de broken and needed help.
June.” He called softly, and the moment she lifted her weak eyes, pure hope flashed in them.
She tried to speak through her gag. She looked like she had a lot to say, but there was no time.
The man strode toward her, taking in her form for another second before shaking his head pitifully and crouching beside her.
He slowly pulled down the gag but hushed her when she was about to speak.
“Shhhh. He placed a finger to his lips, “Not a word.” And she nodded frantically.
He immediately loosened the ropes binding her hands and legs before lifting her up to her feet.
“Can you walk?” He asked, and she nodded. “Good. If you can walk, then you can run.” And that wasn’t a question. It was an instruction.
His voice was so cold and emotionless.
June looked at him, confused, grateful, and expectant. But he didn’t even return the look with warmth.
“You’ve played a bad card, June. And you deserve all the punishment that’s meant to come to you,” He said, suddenly realizing that all he felt for her was disgust. “I’m not proud of you, and I’d never be.”
There was silence.
