“What are you doing sitting on the ground?” I asked as I looked at an old dusty book “Where did you get these?”
Maddie bit her lip nervously
“Please don’t be mad” She said and I frowned in confusion. Why would I be mad at her “But I kind of stole them from my mom’s room in the old pack house”
“I’m sorry, you what?” I looked down at the books again
“Technically they’re mine by birth, right” She said quickly
“I don’t care about the books” I told her “I’m just confused. What room, I’ve never seen a room in the pack house for your mother, I was actually really confused why you wanted to go there, because I’d never seen any evidence of anyone else living there besides my grandparents, dad and uncle”
“The room was hidden” She told me
“Hidden?” I was so confused, I’d been to the pack house for decades and I’d never found a hidden room “Tell me what happened today”
Maddie quickly filled me in about the barrier and her mother’s room and wedding dress and that she’d taken some of her mother’s belongings, her diaries included
“So..my grandparents hid her room” I said thoughtfully “That’s really strange, I’ll have to ask my parents about this”
“Will they be mad at me?” She asked quickly “I don’t want you or Jax to take another punishment for me if they are, I’ll take it”
“Neither Jax or myself will ever let anyone hurt you so just deal with it” I told her firmly “That being said, I doubt my parents will get mad, they’re a lot more laid back then my grandmother”
Maddie nodded and placed the diary down on top of the other one
“Speaking of Jax, are we allowed to go visit him?”
“I am but you’re not and even if you were, I’d never let you go to the prison”
“Why?”
“Because it’s dangerous”
“Oh” She said and looked down
“I know I seem controlling, but I’m just thinking about your safety”
“No, it’s not that, it’s just” She hesitated and looked up at me again “I’m not used to having anyone care about my safety, it’s strange”
I suppressed a growl at her comment, she’d always be alone, always left to take care of herself
“Well you have a lot of people who care about your safety now”
I pulled her into my arms and hugged her tightly but then my stomach growled.
Maddie laughed and pulled back “Let me guess?” She said with a smirk “You need to eat because you’re wasting away”
I laughed and nodded “Yes, come on, let’s go eat”
“They’ll give Jax dinner won’t they?”
“Of course” I assured her “I asked Julia to prepare something for us. We’re going to eat on the balcony, it’s such a gorgeous evening”
“Okay”
I reached out my hand but when she took it, I noticed the edges of her sleeve were singed
“Cr*p” I pulled her hand up “Are you burnt. Why were you sitting so close to the fire”
I examined her hand and wrist but thankfully they were burnt and when I looked up at her face, I noticed she seemed nervous
“What’s wrong?”
“I.. it wasn’t an accident” She told me “Well, burning my sleeve was, I didn’t realize I’d gotten the dress burnt but I purposely put my hand in the fire”
“What?!” I couldn’t believe what I’d just heard “Why the f*ck would you do that, were you trying to hurt yourself?”
“No” She shook her head “I just, I wanted to see if it would hurt, and it didn’t, fire doesn’t burn me, I’ve always been able to control fire but it would still burn my skin, but now… for some reason it doesn’t even hurt, it actually feels really nice on my skin”
I frowned and rubbed my face as I digested everything she’d just said
“Your powers must have grown” I told her “It can sometimes happen once you’ve met your mate but why you would even think to attempt that in the first place is beyond me”
Maddie looked worried and began to fidget with her fingers, I’d noticed that she did this when she was scared so I didn’t push her.
“Lets go eat” I said “And don’t do anything st*pid like that again’
I led Maddie outside and pulled out a chair for Maddie to sit on and gently brushed my fingers down her arm, the tingles from the mate bond was so addictive.
“Do you want something to drink?”
“Yes please”
I walked over to the trolley Julia had left by the table, there were drinks and glasses which I used to fix Maddie and myself something.
“My Queen” I smiled as I passed her a drink
“Thank you”
“So Evet told me you ran into your old Luna” I said cautiously as I sat down at the table were several dished waited to get into my stomach.
“She shouldn’t have worried you”
“I don’t want you talking to anyone from your old pack” I told her “Nothing good will come from it, stay away from them, they’ll be gone soon, and you’ll never have to see them again”
“Okay” She nodded but looked upset.
I quickly changed the subject and spent the rest of dinner getting to know her better and laughed of embarrassment when she revealed some stories Evet had told her about myself and Jax before we cleaned up together and went our separate ways to showers, I’d offered to shower with her but she blushed and rushed into the bathroom so I pouted and went to the spare bathroom again.
Maddie was already in bed when I returned to the room and I smiled when I saw her wearing one of Jaxsons shirts
“Missing Jax?”
Maddie shrugged and hugged her knee’s she’d pulled up in front of her
“You’ll see him tomorrow” I told her as I pulled off my robe and climbed in beside her “But I guess I could distract you so you don’t miss Jax to much”
I pulled Maddie onto my lap and began to kiss her softly as she grabbed my shoulders for support
