“So you’re officially off the market I see” Cole joked and gestured to my mark, making me smile
“Sorry” I shrugged “I know you’ve been madly in love with me all these years but I don’t think Madelyn likes to share”
“I don’t” She commented and we all laughed
When we headed into our parents office, we found them sitting with Ryker and looking uncomfortable
“What’s going on?” Koda asked “Why did you exclude us from the meeting”
Our father didn’t respond, he just stood up and came over to Madelyn and gently held her chin and turned her head to examine her neck but she pulled away from him and cringed into Koda who stepped in front of her
“What are you doing?” He snapped
“Checking that she was marked”
“Well check with your eyes” I growled but his glared at me “Don’t touch her!”
“You’re not King yet, mind your tone”
“Boys enough” Our mother ordered “Everyone come sit down, now that Madelyn is marked, we can finally talk about everything”
“Everything?” Madelyn asked
“You’re mother”
“I know about my mother” Madelyn responded “I have her diaries”
“You don’t know everything” My father told her “Sit”
Koda pulled Madelyn down on the sofa and I sat on her other side and sat back comfortably with my knee up on my thigh
‘This is difficult to talk about but you need to know the truth’ Our father ran his fingers through his hair as he sat beside my mother ‘But you are twenty one, so you need to be prepared in case you’re like your mother because if you are, your molt will begin soon’
‘Molt?’ Madelyn said with interest ‘My mother mentioned that in her diaries, what is molting?’
‘It’s when your body will literally burst into flames and peal your skin off’
‘What?’ I looked at Madelyn with wide concerned eyes
‘Why the hell would that happen?’ Koda asked as he took Madelyn’s hand ‘Because she’s a white Lycan?’
‘No, because she’s something much rarer’ Our father looked at Madelyn ‘She is the one of the last of her kind, she’s a phoenix, well, half anyway, the last true phoenix is your grandmother but I haven’t heard from her since I killed your mother’
“So.. so she could still be alive?’ Madelyn asked eagerly
“Most likely” Mother nodded
“So wait, go back” I held up my hand “Madelyn’s a what?”
“A phoenix” Our mother answered
“Her mothers mother was a phoenix and her father was a white Lycan” Our father told us “A very powerful white Lycan but no one knew who Iyarna would take after and as her father was busy with the dragon wars, he couldn’t raise her to know what being a white Lycan meant and until they knew if she was a phoenix, she couldn’t stay with her mother either, no one ever expected her to be a hybrid, that shocked everyone and we think that you will be one too Madelyn, we think that’s why Troy wants you, because you will molt and he and Fenrir can used you”
Jax and I looked at Maddie with fear.
“How did she end up here?” Cole asked “If a phoenix can be used, wouldn’t it have made more sense to put her into hiding?”
“She was in hiding” Dad answered “No one but our family knew where she’d come from, we told everyone she was just an orphan and that her parents had been killed by rogues”
“Why take her in the first place?” I asked
I looked at Maddie who was looking at her hands quietly taking everything in.
“For power” My mother commented “They made a deal with Iyos family”
“We would help them with the war and take in Iyo” Dad went on “In exchange they would provide us with power, more power than you could even possibly imagine, a single Phoenix feather cure any illness, a tear can heal any injury, their flame is powerful enough to give energy to our entire kingdom for years, her blood can bring back the dead and create life”
“That’s how she made the werewolves” My mother told us
“I read that in her diaries” Maddie told us “She hated you but loved Fenrir, they were really close and she wanted to help him”
“Yes” Dad nodded “And I don’t blame her for hating me, I wasn’t exactly humble growing up and I treated everyone as if they were beneath me, even my own twin”
“After he didn’t shift” Ryker interjected “Your uncle became bitter and his hatred for Theo grew and with Theo being, well, for lack of a better word, a jerk to him, it only made them grow further apart”
“She tried to make him happy” My dad told us “She wanted to find a way to help him shift and it worked, he shifted but when my parents found out, they were horrified and kept it a secret frmo the pack and they made her promise not to make any more werewolves and she finally agreed afteFenrir lost control one day and killed someone”
“So what happened than?” Jax asked “If she’d agreed to stop, where did everything go wrong?”
“It was all my fault ” Ryker told us “We fell in love and were going to take each other as our chosen”
“The wedding dress” Maddie looked at him “You were the one she was going to marry”
“Yes” He looked down in shame “But the day of our engagement party, I met Sophia and I fell in love, I didn’t mean to hurt Iyo but you know what it’s like when you meet your mate, I couldn’t go through with the wedding”
“You broke her heart” Maddie looked at him angrily
“Yes” Our father glared at his Beta “And it destroyed her, once a Phoenix feels betrayed , they switch, it’s like they turn cold and heartless, they can’t be reasoned with, its one of the reasons they need a keeper, they train the Phoenix to control over their emotions but Iyos keeper never came for her and Fenrir took advantage of the situation”
“He was power hungry” My mother told us “He used her rage against her and made her create an entire species, he convinced her that the Lycans were evil and needed to be destroyed and she went along with it”
“The war broke out after I went to stop them but” Dad paused “But… in the end, I had to kill her and take Fenrir prisoner”
“So what’s to stop this from happening to Maddie?” I asked nervously
“We’re hoping by marking her you can keep her emotions in check” Our mother said gently
“So that’s why you were pushing us to mark her” Jaxson growled
“It wasn’t the only reason” Dad said quickly “Despite what you two may think of me, I do care about your happiness and I wanted you both to be with your mate”
“Plus, if Maddie does molt, her keeper will come to her” Mother added
“He already has” I admitted “He’s been sending her messages but won’t make himself known”
“He won’t until she molts” Dad told us “It’s against their laws, it was only out of pure desperation that they contacted us about Iyo, if the situation was different, they never would have even let us know they existed, they don’t talk to outsiders”
“So, there’s no way of contacting my grandmother?”
