“I’m sorry, no” Dad told her
“What about my grandfather?”
“He died during the war”
“Oh’ Madelyn’s face fell
“When will this molt happen, if it’s going to?” I asked
“Any day now” Ryker answered
“It could happen today, tomorrow or months from now” Dad told us “It always happens during the Phoenix’s twenty-first year”
“Something to look forward to then” Madelyn stood up and hugged her arms around her waist and went over to the window
“Sweetheart?” I stood up went over and wound my arms around her “If this happens, we’lll take care of you”
“Will it hurt?” She turned in my arms and looked at my father
“Like nothing you’ve ever experienced” He admitted “Iyo barely survived and she was unconcious for days”
“I see” She whispered and I quickly pulled her against my chest
“Is there some kind of drug we can give her to numb the pain?” Koda came over to us and gently ran his hand over her hair
“No, sorry”
“This is crazy” Madelyn shook her head “I spent my whole life thinking I was a werewolf and thane you tell me I’m a Lycan and now suddenly a possible hybrid who’s going to burst into flames and become a dam bird”
“At least you’ll be able to fly” Koda tried to joke “Think of all the travel costs you’ll save”
“Koda not now” I rolled my eyes and shoved him “No one thinks you’re funny, this is serious”
“I think you’re funny” Madelyn smirked at him before exhaling “So what if I do molt, does that mean the keeper will come to me?”
“Most likely” Ryker nodded
“And through him, I can find my grandmother” Madelyn said excitedly
“Why do you even want to know her?” I asked and stepped back “She knew you existed and she just left you alone to suffer with Troy all these years”
“She may not know Maddie was born” My mother said reasonably
“If she didn’t then the keeper wouldn’t be here” Koda pointed out “She knew Maddie was born and she left her in hell, I don’t want her anywhere near our mate”
“That isn’t up to you” Ryker said firmly “Madelyn has the right to know her family”
“We’re her family” I snapped “Even if she is a Phoenix, her grandmother has no claim on her”
“If I am half phoenix” Maddie enquired “Does that mean I hatched from an egg?”
I laughed and looked at our parents “Does it?” I asked, genuinely curious now too
“We don’t know” Mom shrugged “Iyo wasn’t, her mother gave birth naturally and it literally killed her, Phoenix’s lay eggs in a fire, so her body wasn’t prepared to give birth”
“But you said her mother was alive”
“She was” Dad nodded “In a way, you see Maddie, pure Phoenix’s are immortal, they can die and come back to life over and over again but it’s not technically the same person, they have all the memories from their past life but no real emotional connection to those memories or their past life”
“So when your grandmother died and came back, she wasn’t the same person” Mom told us “She still acknowledged that Iyo was her child but she didn’t love her the way a mother should”
“That’s so sad” Maddie looked down in pain
“Well I guess that explains why she didn’t care about leaving Maddie with those dogs!” Koda snarled
“What does that mean for Madelyn?” I asked with a slight nervous edge “If she dies, can she be reborn but if she does, will she still belong to us?”
Koda’s eyes widened at that thought and we stared from Maddie to our father.
“If she is a hybrid like her mother then yes, she’ll be able to come back from the dead” He told us “But not over and over again like her grandmother, she will only have so much power to come back once, maybe twice and if she does come back, I don’t know if you’ll still be her mates, she may not feel anything for either of you”
“Well, we’ll just have to keep her alive and never risk it” I said firmly and kissed Maddies hand
“I agree” Koda took her hand again and kissed it
KODA’S POV
“I agree”
“Do you think my mother could still be alive then?” Maddie asked and it broke my heart to see the hope in her eyes “If she can come back from the dead?”
“I don’t think so dear” Mom said gently “There’s only so many times she could come back”
“But you guys said we could come back once or twice” She said hopefully
“Sweetheart” Jax touched her face “As much as Cody and I want you to have everything your heart desires, I dont think this is something we can give you, I know it’s hard but you have to accept that your mother is gone”
“If she was still alive we’d have heard rumors about a white Lycan somewhere’ I added ‘They’re powerful and rare, no one would keep that a secret’
Maddie nodded and looked down “I don’t know how I feel about all of this” Maddie whispered “Am I really going to molt one day?”
“We think so” Ryker answered
“If I do, will I feel it coming on?’ Maddie asked
“Your mother did” Dad answered
“Good” Maddie nodded “I’ll have to time to get away from the twins, I don’t want to hurt them”
“We don’t have to worry about that for now’ Our dad told us ‘If it happens, it happens and there nothing we can do about it, what we need to focus on is finding Troy and stopping him from using Madelyn for her blood’
“Since this is a day of confessions, we need to tell you all about Troy” Jaxson looked at Maddie and then at me so I nodded “Madelyn has shown us her memories and there were alot about Troy taking her blood, so I guess he’s already trying to re-create the spell Iyarna created to make werewolves’
“How long has he been taking your blood?” Dad asked in concern
“About 9 years” Madelyn answered “I always asked why he was taking my blood but he’d never tell me”
“So he’s already had one hell of a head start” Dad whispered nervously
