“Maddie?” Koda said cautiously, and went over to her. He tried to hug her, but she growled, and shoved him away.
“Don’t touch me!” She demanded, and I quickly stood up too.
“We’re sorry that we organized all of this without you, but you have to understand, we’re so used to just doing things between the two of us” I defended us “And as I’ve told you repeatedly, when it comes to your safety, Koda and I, are in charge, if anything were to happen to you, we’d both die”
“Please don’t be upset” Koda attempted to touch her again, and this time, she didn’t shove him away, so he quickly wrapped his arms around her waist and hugged her “We love you so much, and when you showed us that vision, we just went straight into Alpha protection mode, it’s our duty to keep you safe”
“Madelyn, say something” I pleaded when she remained silent.
“I don’t want to be hidden away while you all fight for me” She told us, and I could hear pain in her voice.
“Well, too bad” I told her “We’re not risking Troy getting his hands on you”
“But, this doesn’t even matter” Koda gently pushed her braided hair from her neck, and kissed his mark “Because I’ll find him before the festival, and you won’t have to hide”
Madelyn nodded, and turned in Koda’s arms, hugging him and pressing her face into his chest, so I walked over and cuddled her too.
“Is there anything you have to tell me about?” She asked.
“Should we mention the golden thread?” Koda asked me, but I shook my head slightly, so Madelyn wouldn’t notice.
“No, we’re all up to speed” I told her, but Koda frowned at me, I knew he didn’t like me lying, but there was no way I was telling her that our father wanted a personal connection to her, that would control her powers “And I’m sorry I brought up your past memories, I won’t do it again, I’ll wait for you to come to us”
She looked at me and nodded, before snuggling back up against Koda “You’re not going alone are you?”
“No baby, I’ll have guards with me”
“Okay”
“Alpha’s, Beta Cole is coming” One of the guards linked us “And he looks upset”
“Thanks” I responded. I walked over to the door, and opened it before our Beta arrived, and he looked absolutely distraught, which was not like him at all.
“What’s wrong?” Koda asked, as he moved away from our mate.
“Perhaps we should speak in private” Cole looked pointedly at Madelyn, who glared at him and crossed her arm.
“She’s not going anywhere” I shut the door and looked over at him “Speak”
Cole gulped, and looked at us in concern, his eyes laced with pain “There was an attack at the orphanage” He told us “Everyones dead, I’m heading there now, but the King has asked for you to accompany me”
“Oh my goddess” Madelyn gasped, and grabbed Koda’s arm “Everyone?”
“They’re still going through the bodies, matching them to the registry” Cole answered “But so far, there’s no one alive”
“Fenrir?” I asked, but Cole shrugged.
“We don’t know yet”
“Right, okay, baby, go back to your office and” Koda began to say, but our mate cut him off.
“No, I want to come!” Madelyn said quickly, and tugged on the sleeve of his jacket “Please, I can help, my healing abilities might be needed, and I can also use them to emotionally help too”
“Fine” I responded before Koda could ‘But if there’s still a threat, you are coming straight back here”
“Okay”
We made quick work of getting to the orphanage, but once we arrived, I wished I hadn’t allowed Madelyn to come.
The lobby area on the ground level of the orphanage was covered in blood, and there were several body parts, and a few dead children and staff.
Madelyn gasped, and placed her hands over her mouth in shock, and Koda quickly grabbed and turned her away.
“Go wait in the car” He ordered, and turned to one of the guards “Seb, take her back, and”
“No” Madelyn pulled away “I’m fine, I was just.. I just wasn’t expecting… I’m fine”
“Sweetheart, you look like you’re going to throw up” I touched her cheek, but she shook her head.
“I said, I’m fine” She argued “I just feel… I can’t explain it, there’s”
“It’s the Luna bond” My mother’s voice came from the hallway, as she walked into the lobby.
“The what?” Madelyn asked.
My mother’s face was calm and blank, but I knew her well enough to know that she was hiding her true feelings, she was in pain.
“Once a Luna is marked” My mother touched Madelyn’s arm “She is connected to the pack through her mates or in your case, mates, we feel their pain, and fear, especially in situations like this, that pain lingers in air, if it’s too much for you, you should go, I’ve been through the house, it will only get worse for you”
“No, I can handle it” Madelyn told her firmly.
“As you wish” My mother smiled “I am leaving to speak with the families of the victims, your father is inside”
We watched our mother leave with her maid, and guards, while we turned back to the bodies.
“Come on, baby” Koda took Madelyn’s hand, and she looked into his eyes for a second before taking a breath to steady herself, and turning back to the horrific scene.
Dead bodies didn’t bother myself or Koda. Our granddaughter had made sure we’d seen a lot growing up, he and our father had even forced us, on occasion, to kill rogues, and a few enemies growing up, so this wasn’t new to us.
We walked through to the next room, a large open living room, filled with games and tables, as well as large sofa’s and a massive tv.
Ryker was talking with two guards, but turned towards us, when we walked in.
There were more dead children and staff inside and tears filled Madelyn’s eyes, as she knelt beside a young boy with curly blonde hair, she checked his pulse but quickly pulled away.
“They’re all dead, Luna” One of the healers told her, as she covered a small girl in a sheet.
“Ryker, report, what happened here?”
Ryker came over to us, as I watched Madelyn check the other children for heartbeats.
“No damn clue” Ryker shook his head “The doors and windows were all locked from the inside” He pointed to the windows close by “The morning staff, have been trying to get in since 9am, but they had no luck. When they finally contacted the guards, they managed to get inside, and they found all of this”
My father and my assistant, Lucy, walked in, talking, but when they saw us, Lucy smiled and looked over at Madelyn.
“Hello Luna, it’s wonderful to finally meet you” Lucy came over, and I remembered that they hadn’t met. After meeting Madelyn, we’d sent Lucy off to go gather information on Luna Morgan, and she’d only just returned a few days ago, but we’d given her some time off.
“Hello” Madelyn said wearily, and looked up at me.
