“Sweetheart, this is Lucy, our assistant”
“Oh, okay, it’s nice to meet you”
“So who’s missing?” I asked Lucy, who was holding a clip board, with a list of names, as Madelyn checked another child “Koda, stop her” I linked my brother.
The more children she checked, the more her distress broke through the link, and I hated feeling her pain.
“Three children, and one staff member” She answered “The head matron Silvia, and two girls, Kathy and Lilah, and the new boy that was rescued after Alpha Hallus was killed”
“Eugene?” I questioned. Poor kid couldn’t catch a break.
“Baby, come here” I heard Koda say to Madelyn, as I turned to Lucy “Please stop checking them, they’re gone”
“Did you say Alpha Hallus?” Madelyn asked, I froze for a second and looked back at her.
Her face paled, and she glanced at our father, she’d shown us through her memory transfers that she was in fact there the night Hallus was killed, confirming the suspicions I’d had.
“Yes” Koda answered her “Eugene was his orphaned ward, he was there when Troy killed him”
“No he wasn’t” Madelyn shook her head “There was no one there, just Alpha Troy and his son Bennet, Alpha Hallus hated children, he’d never have taken in an orphan”
My father frowned in thought, at her words “Are you sure?”
“Yes” Madelyn nodded “I swear, there were no children there that night, I don’t know who this boy was, but he wasn’t Alpha Hallus’s ward”
“Why would he lie?” Koda asked.
Before any of us could answer, Madelyn gasped in pain, and held her chest, as tears filled her eyes.
“Baby?” Koda grabbed her arms
“Somethings wrong” She pulled away, and looked towards the stairs “I can feel… someone’s alive”
She bolted away, and ran up the staircase, while we all followed after her.
KODA’S POV
“Maddie!” I called after our mate. Damn, she was fast.
The second story of the house, was just as bad as the first floor. Blood and body parts were scattered everywhere.
We chased after her, into one of the children’s rooms, and she was looking around frantically, touching the walls, as if trying to find an opening.
“Sweetheart, what’s going on?” Jax asked, his eyes scanning the room.
“There’s something.. someones hiding, they’re hurt” She touched her chest, as if in pain.
“Start searching” I told the guards, as Maddie slowly started walking past the long line of beds, most of them covered in blood.
Small teddy’s and toys were thrown around the room, and we had to step over the items in order to search, but we found nothing.
I was looking under a bed, when Jax spoke “Sweetheart” He said gently, and I looked up to see him touch Maddie’s arms “There’s no one here, you’re imagining things”
“No I’m not” She snapped, and pulled away, she looked around the room, and frowned at the fireplace “Everyone be quiet!”
We all fell silent, and suddenly we could hear a soft whimper, Maddie’s eyes widened, and she ran over to the fireplace, and ducked down, and climbed into it
“Theres a hidden panel” She told us, as she pushed it aside and climbed further into the old fireplace.
“Madelyn, get out of there!” Jax knelt and tried to grab her ankle, but she growled and pulled free “Let me do it!”
“I FOUND SOMEONE!” She shouted.
I couldn’t believe it, I ran over and sat down on my knee’s next to my brother. I peeked inside and saw Maddie grabbing a small girl, who was curled up in the corner, right at the very back of the large fireplace.
Maddie started pulling her out, but Jax quickly took over, and scooped up the young bleeding child, and pulled her out of the fireplace.
“It’s Lilah” Lucy told us “I can’t believe she’s still alive, it’s been hours”
“GET ONE OF THE HEALERS!” I shouted, as Jax laid her on the ground.
“I can heal her” Maddie declared, as she climbed out covered in ash “Get me something to use as a conduit, quick, she’s dying!”
Jax and I looked around the room for some kind of plant or living object. I saw a large fern but when I went to grab it, the young girl cried out in pain, so Maddie quickly started healing her, and began to cry out as wounds started splitting all over her body.
“MADELYN STOP!” Jaxson yelled and tried to stop her from healing the girl, but the second he grabbed her shoulder, he winced in pain as the wounds of the little girl transferred between Maddie and my brother.
I moved quicker, so neither of them were being harmed, and moved the fern over to them, but Maddie was spitting up blood by the time I reached her.
“Take the fern’ I told her, but she either didn’t hear me, or ignored it, because she continued healing the girl, and I lost my cool, seeing her hurting pushed me over the edge, not to mention the fact that I could feel Jaxson’s pain as well.
“GRAB THE DAMN FERN!” I shouted at her. She jumped in fear, and I hated myself for it, but when she reached one hand out, and touched it, color started returning to her face, and Jax relaxed.
It didn’t take long for the girl to heal, and by the time the healer had come running, she was completely fine.
Lilah started waking up, and burst into frightened cries “It’s okay” Maddie held the girl close, and gently rocked her.
“Lilah” My father knelt and touched her arm “What happened?”
“She nearly died” Maddie pulled the girl away from our dad “Give her a minute before you make her relive the worst moments of her life”
“Watch who you’re talking to Madelyn” Dad warned her “This is more important than one damn child, we need to know what happened”
“I don’t want to” Lilah cried into Maddie’s chest “I’m scared”
“It’s okay baby girl” Maddie pushed her back, and wiped her face “You don’t have to talk to the King, I can take the memories from you, you won’t ever have to remember what happened to you, I promise”
“What do you mean?” Jax asked her, as he wiped blood from his arm. The wound was already healing, thank the goddess.
“I can take people’s memories” Maddie told us, as she gently touched the young girls temples, her hands started to glow again, and I grabbed Jaxson’s shoulder, as my eyes widened “She won’t have to live with the trauma, and I can show everyone what happened here”
“You have that ability?” My father asked, and I looked at him with a frown.
“Yes” Maddie answered.
“Your mother had that power” He responded, and Maddie looked up at him, Maddie looked happy by this revelation, but my father looked upset for some reason.
Lilah’s face went from horrified and afraid, to serene in seconds. As she fell asleep, Maddie let go her head, and held her safely in her arms. She was a natural mother.
