“ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND, KODA?” Jax growled “I WOULD NEVER HURT HER, HOW DARE YOU THINK SHE NEEDS PROTECTING FROM ME!”
“Jax, I mean it, calm down” Koda said again, as I nervously grabbed the back of Koda’s jacket.
“Please don’t fight because of me” I pleaded “I know you’re mad, Jax, but I had to, it wasn’t right what you did, and… and I don’t think it was Beta Coles fault, I think Noland shoved Beta Coles hand towards my face”
“What are you talking about?” Jax said calmly now, though he was breathing hard.
“Perhaps we should speak in private” Koda said firmly.
“You’re damn right we should!” Jaxson growled, and marched angrily from the room.
“Maddie, come with me please” Koda held out his hand, but I folded my arms around my waist, and walked out ahead of him, but I heard him speaking to Beta Cole before leaving “You are lucky that Maddie is so forgiving, because I agree with Jax, you deserved that scar, if she is ever hurt in your presence again, you’ll wish that all we gave you is a scar”
I heard him walking after me, but he managed to catch up with me as I walked into the twins office.
“We don’t want to be disturbed” Koda told the guards who nodded, and closed the door behind us.
Jax was pacing around, and running his fingers through his hair, as he tried to cool down.
“Okay, firstly” He turned back to me “Don’t EVER use your powers like that on me again, and secondly, what do you mean, you think Noland pushed Coles hand?”
I looked at the twins nervously “I was curious about what Councilor Jordan said, so I went looking for the note, and there was one”
The twins eye’s widened, and I could see Jax shaking in rage “What kind of note?” He said through a clenched jaw “A love note?”
“No” I shook my head, and pulled the letter from my bra and passed it to Koda “It’s from my Keeper”
Jax walked over and read the note over Koda’s shoulder, and they both looked furious.
“So Noland is your Keeper” Koda said softly, as if this information broke his heart.
Jaxson growled and angrily shoved everything off his cabinet “WHEN WERE YOU GOING TO TELL US”
“AT LUNCH TODAY!” I shouted back “STOP SHOUTING AT ME, OR I’M NOT TALKING TO YOU!”
Jax turned back to my quickly, and took a deep breath “I’m sorry” He said quickly, and ran his fingers through his hair “If this is true, we have to find out for sure, has Noland ever said anything that made you think he was your Keeper?”
I shook my head “No, but” I hesitated “I’ve dreamed about him”
Both the twins looked hurt and outraged “What was the dream about?” Koda’s voice was low and shook, I hated seeing him so serious, I preferred it when he was playful, so I knew how much this hurt him “Was it intimate?”
“Of course not” I assured them “I was in a strange training area, and he congratulated and hugged me”
“He had his hands on you?” Jaxson claws came out and retracted instantly, before he marched to the door.
“What are you doing?” I panicked. Was he going to fight Noland?
He pulled open the door “Get me warrior Noland, now, he should be in the training grounds”
“Yes, your majesty”
Jax slammed the door shut again, and looked back at me with a sad expression.
“Why are you acting so jealous?” I asked “It meant nothing, it wasn’t s*xtual, and if he is my Keeper, then the hug was just that of friendship”
“Friendship?” Koda laughed humorlessly “If this pr*ck is your Keeper” He tossed the letter angrily on the table “Than he left you to get tortured for years, how could you think about having a friendship with him, how could you want him in your life at all?”
“Alpha Troy hurt me, not Noland” I said reasonably “Besides, we don’t know that he is my Keeper, that note may have come from someone else, and he just tucked it back into one of my books that I’d dropped, and the training session might be, because he becomes my trainer”
“Not bloody likely” Jax growled “We’d never agree to a man being your trainer, and I doubt you’d dream about some random trainer, he must be important in your life. Why didn’t you tell us about this dream, why are you still keeping things from us?”
“Are we doing something wrong, Maddie?” Koda asked, his voice sad “I thought we were connecting, but maybe it was just hopefully wishing on our part”
“It’s not” I said quickly “I do feel connected to you both”
“Then why didn’t you tell us about the dream?” Jax asked again “Why did you tell us when you were stoned that you kept memories from us, when you transferred the others to us?’
“Why didn’t you tell us about the necklace?” Koda added.
“I don’t remember telling you that while I was drugged” I defended myself “But of course I kept memories from you, some things, I want to tell you myself, and you don’t get to be angry at me for that, I will decide when I share things, not either of you, and there are decades of memories you two haven’t told me about, and as for the necklace, it’s complicated”
“So un-complicate it” Jax ordered.
“I already lost the other necklace, Alpha Troy only gave me the family ring, that my mother left me the day she died” I went on “Alpha Troy obviously kept the necklac, because I never knew anything about it until the night we met, and he told me about them, and I had another letter from my Keeper after I found the necklace telling me to keep it a secret, and I just didn’t want to share this necklace with anyone, it felt like a piece of my mom, and I wanted it for myself, at least for now”
“You’ve had another letter all this time?” Koda asked “That was ages ago, it was the night you put your hand in the fire, isn’t it?”
“Yes” I answered “It’s why I put my hand in the fire, Noland.. or my Keeper, told me to do it to see if my molt was coming, if it didn’t hurt, then the molt wasn’t far off”
“Are you out of your mind!” Jax shouted “You put your f*cking hand in a fire because some stranger put it in a letter?”
“I can’t believe you did that” Koda shook his head “How could you be so trusting”
“So foolish, you mean!” Jax corrected, and I did feel kind of stupid for blindly trusting some letter, that was kind of stupid of me.
“I’m sorry, I was just curious”
“Curious?!” Koda shouted “For goddess sake, Maddie!”
“I can’t believe this” Jax ran his fingers through his hair again ‘So let me get this straight, you’ve been getting other letters from your Keeper, you kept a necklace from us, you’ve kept dreams from us, and now you’re defending Noland, how can you be so trusting to him, you don’t even know him”
“I can’t explain it” I tired to get them to understand “I just feel this strange connection”
“It’s probably because of that stupid thread”
“Koda shut up!”
“What thread?” I asked, as Jax glared at his brother “WHAT THREAD?”
“The night you got drugged”
“Koda, don’t”
“She needs to know” Koda snapped “The night you were drugged, you said you saw this golden thread on your wrist, but we just thought it was the drugs making you see things, but it wasn’t”
Koda went on to tell me about this golden thread and how I’d most likely connect it with my Keeper, and how the King wanted me to connect it with him, and was why they’d asked me not to be alone with their grandmother or father.
“Are you two kidding me!” I shouted, when Koda stopped talking “You have literally been standing here lecturing me about keeping secrets, when you two have kept something this important from me!?”
