“Yes. It is what I have heard some people call you. They refuse to call you the shadow because you save people. You are no monster. You are the light in the darkness, just as the moon is.” She says, taking Fen by surprise. Fen only nods her head toward the woman and turns and runs off. After about 5 minutes we stopped. I can feel Fen. She feels different. She used to feel dark, now she feels a little lighter. All she needed to hear was that we weren’t monsters. Honestly, I needed to hear that as well. There is still darkness within us, but it isn’t as bad as it used to be. We continue to run back towards the castle, not saying a word. Once we get near the borders she lets me have back control. I sneak back into the bedroom. Successfully scaring my sister.
“Ace! You’re back. I thought you would be out all night.” She questions.
“Came back early. Our anger is mostly gone.” I say heading to change my clothes.
“I know that you were upset about the King, but you still have your other project you can do. I am sure he won’t say no to that.” She says trying to comfort me.
“Oh no. I am still going through with the projects whether he likes it or not. These are changes that need to be done.” I say as I disappear into the bathroom with my clothes. When I exit she is still standing there.
“What do you mean you are still going through with the projects?” She asks.
“Just as I said. I am still going through with them.” I say annoyingly.
“But he said no.” She argues.
“And HE is not the boss of me. These projects will help people. If they didn’t then I wouldn’t do them, but they do. So whether he likes it or not, they are getting done.” I say and she just nods her head and walks back to the bed. I follow her and plop next to her on the bed.
“Do you know when the apartment will be finished? I haven’t had a chance to really sit down and talk logically with Amara.” I ask her.
“Oh she actually said that it will be done by the end of this week. They still have to configure the other bathrooms she wants to put in. Something about needing a certain pipe for the waterline. I don’t know.” She says.
“That is not bad. The end of the week.. That is a lot quicker than any other flip project. Normally they take months.” I say. Maleena just nods her head and turns on the TV. Lucifer. I lay back on the bed and so did she. She brought chips up from the kitchen and we sit there eating them. It is only 9:30 at night. It is weird. Normally I go hunting after dark, but this time the sun was still up when I left. I don’t know when, but I dozed off.
I was hanging from the ceiling in silver chains. I had lashed out and punched one of the guards. Fen still wasn’t with me. She shut down after being betrayed. The guard I hit came through the door with another guard who was holding a syringe. Both with eyes of hate. The one I hit came up to me and punched me in the face, breaking my nose. He then reset it roughly and said “Can’t go ruining your face now can I?” Then he laughed. The other man came up and stabbed me with the syringe, injecting me with wolfsbane. Pain radiated throughout my whole body as I screamed. The man I hit started laughing, then ripped off my pants I had on. I was struggling against him, even though I was in pain I didn’t want this. “Shhhh. Little wolf. This will only hurt a lot.” He says, still laughing. He unbuttoned his pants and I saw it bounce out. I started seizing from the wolfsbane as he shoved it in me.
I woke up panting. My whole body felt like it was on fire. Maleena shot up from next to me forcing me to jump.
“What’s wrong?” She asked immediately, going into fight mode.
“Nothing, just a night terror.” I say looking at the clock, it reads 11:55. I sigh and get up from bed changing into workout clothes. Black leggings and a black long sleeve top. I can feel Maleena watching me as I come out of the bathroom.
“You still have those?” She asks.
“They’ll never go away. I just count on them always being there. Go back to sleep, Little Sun. I will be back in the morning to wake you up for school.” I say as I head towards the window. I see her smile from me calling her by her nickname and she lays back down.
I go to my training grounds and see that Lucas is already there waiting for me. It is 12:15. I smile to myself knowing that he will push himself harder from now on. Fen is still quiet from last night’s events, but I can feel her satisfaction at him being here.
“I thought about what you said. And I want this more than anything. I am willing to do whatever it takes.” He says confidently.
“Don’t tell me. Show me.” I say as we do some stretches. After that we get into a fighting position and start sparing. He is doing well. After that we work on the basics, which he has down, so I add in some more complicated moves. By the end of the night he has those mastered. We finish the training with a run. And head back to the castle. “All he needed was proof that he wanted it. Before he wouldn’t have the confidence to try those moves, he is a natural learner.” Fen says proudly. “He is, all it takes is a few times showing him and few correcting his positioning and he is good.” I say back smiling. I don’t know what was holding him back before, but after our talk he seems like he is a natural.
I get back to the room and am surprised to see Maleena already up. She is digging through her suitcase looking for something to wear. I can feel her stress.
“Good! You’re back! I need help.” She says holding some things up. Fen and I chuckle at her. She is holding up a baby blue summer dress, a green t-shirt, and a floral blouse.
“What is the statement you are wanting to make?” I ask, indulging in her teenage angst.
“Well. Um.. I don’t know.” She says, while throwing the clothes on the bed and pouting.” I just want to blend in. I already stand out by mixing my schedule.” She says, sighing.
“I tell you what. Wear that floral tank top you got from Laura. Pair it with your ripped jeans, and black boots. You can borrow one of my leather jackets if you want to give off a more rough look.” I say and she lights up.
“You’d let me have one of your jackets?” She asks excitedly. “You said nothing about have.” Fen buts in.
“Yes. Just not my good one.” I say and she nods excitedly and starts digging through her suitcase for the clothes. I only shake my head and go towards the bathroom to take a shower. I get out and see her panicking.
“You took forever! I need to take a shower, and still do my hair and makeup.” She exclaims.
“You still have over an hour to do that. It is 5:30.” I say patting her head and she looks at me grumpily.
“You don’t know the struggle of actually trying to look nice.” She says as she walks behind me and shuts the bathroom door. “Ouch.” I say, a little hurt by the comment.
“She’s right. We have never cared about how we look.” Fen says. I just sigh and head to the bed. I pick up my sketchpad and start to sketch. Redna walks in 30 minutes later with breakfast. Her face is gleaming.
