I held up a hand before the doctor could say anything. “Mom, I’m fine. My wolf healed the injury.”
“Still…” she said, her voice soft, worry laced in every syllable.
“Ughhh…” I groaned, shaking my head, but there was a smile playing on my lips.
ANNA’S POV
It was exactly two weeks after the whole fiasco with Alpha King George and his daughter Sophie. Two weeks since the day everything almost ended for me. Two weeks since I felt the cold sting of a silver dagger in my skin and heard the deafening sound of a bomb exploding behind me. Two weeks since the bond between Ryan and me had completely snapped. My body had already healed, thanks to my wolf’s strength, her healing powers had worked faster than I could ever imagine.
My life was finally back on track. I was back in Nivelle, back to something that felt like normalcy, and it was all because of Ryan. My Ryan. He had been everything I needed without me even asking. Even though he had more than enough responsibilities weighing on his shoulders, he still never left my side. I didn’t even have the words to describe how much that meant to me.
Mom, Dad, Grandpa, and Grandma had also been so amazing. They barely let me lift a finger during my recovery process. And Omega Agnes-dear Goddess, that woman was an angel. She took care of me like her own child before returning to her family abroad. She refused to leave until she was sure I was strong enough. I still owed her more thanks than I could ever give.
Also, Ryan and I finally decided to do something about our insane sex drive. I mean, the way we couldn’t keep our hands off each other… it was getting out of control. And since I wanted him releasing inside me without holding back, we figured it was time to take some precautions. So, with his full support, I went ahead and got a birth control implant. I didn’t need any more surprises… not yet.
Now, two weeks later, I was finally preparing to go back to school. My exams were starting in exactly one week, and even though I’d missed a lot, Sasha and Ryan had helped me catch up. I couldn’t believe how much I’d missed Sasha until I saw her again. And guess what? She and Chris were finally together! After all their teasing, fighting, and denial, they somehow ended up falling for each other.
I couldn’t stop laughing when she told me, I laughed so hard I almost cried, and honestly, at one point, I was sure she wished the ground would open up and swallow her because of how much I kept teasing her.
Everything was starting to fall into place again… until Ryan walked into the room holding an envelope.
“Baby, it’s here again,” he said as he walked into the room, waving the envelope.
I froze for a second before groaning loudly. “Oh my Goddess, not again.” The moment I saw the seal, I already knew what it was. I didn’t even need to open it.
“Let me guess,” I said, taking it from him and turning it over in my hand. “Them again?”
Ryan nodded, trying not to smile. “Yup.”
I rolled my eyes and threw it on the bed. “Aren’t they tired? I’ve sent rejection letters over and over, and they still keep coming. It’s like they don’t understand the meaning of no!”
Ryan chuckled lightly. “You know they won’t stop easily, babe.”
I let out another frustrated groan, running a hand through my hair. “For Goddess’ sake, I’m not interested! What part of that do they not get?” I muttered, pacing the room. I had too much on my plate already. My exams were next week, and I couldn’t afford to lose focus because of this nonsense.
The letter sat there, mocking me. I could practically hear the council’s words before even opening it. Ever since Alpha King George and Sophie died, the news had spread fast, like wildfire. The entire European werewolt council was in chaos. They had lost their Alpha King, his heir, and their control. And then the truth about me came out, the surviving daughter of Late Alpha Daniel, the rightful heir to the throne. The bloodline they thought was gone forever.
Now they wouldn’t leave me alone,
They wanted me to take the vacant position as Alpha Queen of Europe.
I laughed bitterly just thinking about it. It was absurd. So, so absurd.
“Baby,” Ryan said softly, sitting on the edge of the bed. “Maybe you should think about it. They’re your people. And no matter how much you deny it, remember… blood is thicker.”
I stopped pacing and turned to him, shaking my head. “They’re not my people, Ryan. They never were. I don’t feel even an ounce of pity for them. Their so-called council can take over and run things however they like. I don’t care. There’s a reason my dad walked away from that life. And I’m not ready to take over what destroyed him.”
Ryan sighed, his expression calm but worried. “Babe…”
“NO, Ryan!” I snapped, cutting him off. “No! Their request is ridiculous. How can they expect me to rule over a region I don’t even know? Do they think it’s easy to just throw me into a throne and expect everything to magically fall in place? I have a life here! I have dreams, school, my family, you! And they want me to throw all that away just to clean up their mess?” I was shaking now, my voice rising as my chest tightened. “These are the same people who stood behind the man that murdered my parents, Ryan. The same ones who let him rule, knowing exactly what kind of monster he was. And now that he’s dead, they suddenly remember I exist?”
Ryan stood up slowly and walked toward me. “Baby, I get it. I really do.”
I felt my throat burn as tears filled my eyes. “I just… I can’t. I can’t go back to that world. Every time I think about it, I see my parents, I see blood, I see pain. I don’t want to be tied to that again. I just want peace. I just want a normal life.”
Ryan wrapped his arms around me from behind, holding me tightly. His chest was warm against my back, and I could feel his heartbeat against mine. “Shh,” he whispered. “You don’t owe them anything. You’ve been through enough.”
I turned in his arms, burying my face in his chest. “Ryan…”
He brushed a hand through my hair and kissed the top of my head. “Mmm?”
“I love you.”
“I love you too, baby. So damn much.”
ANNA’S POV
Someone was watching me. I could feel it. That weird tingling feeling crawled up my neck, making it impossible to focus. Sasha and I were in the main library, buried in textbooks for our exams, but I couldn’t shake it. Someone was definitely staring at me.
“Earth to Anna,” Sasha said, waving her hand in front of my face. “You okay? You look totally spaced out.”
“Huh?”
“You’re totally spaced out. What’s going on?”
“What were you saying?”
“Your phone’s been vibrating non-stop. The love of your life is calling,” Sasha teased, her eyes lighting up with that playful glint.
We were in the library, so my phone was on vibrate. I hadn’t noticed it at first, too caught up in that weird, crawling feeling under my skin, like someone was watching me. When I finally pulled it out, my heart jumped seeing Ryan’s name light up the screen. I looked up, and there he was, half-hidden between the bookshelves, watching me with that smirk, the one that always made my stomach twist and my pulse race. He leaned casually against the shelf, completely at ease, like he owned the place.
A laugh slipped out before I could stop it. So it had been Ryan all along. I shook my head, smiling as I texted him.
Me: Why are you here?
He didn’t answer right away. Instead, he just smirked wider, arms crossed, eyes locked on me like he knew exactly what he was doing.
My phone buzzed a moment later.
Ryan: To see you, baby.
My stomach did a little flip.
Me: To see me? In the library?
“How I wish Chris would surprise me like this…” Sasha swooned beside me, leaning over to peek at my screen like we were watching some cheesy rom-com.
But I barely registered her words. My gaze was fixed on Ryan as he crooked his finger ever so subtly, beckoning me toward the back of the stacks. My heart started pounding in my chest, a mix of nerves and excitement bubbling up.
I stood slowly, ignoring Sasha’s knowing side-eye, and slipped down the aisle. I passed rows of dusty, forgotten encyclopedias, my pulse thundering louder with every step as I turned the corner to where he waited.
His back was pressed against the shelf, arms crossed tight over his chest, eyes locked on me like he could already read every dirty thought racing through my mind.
“Ryan… what are you doing here?” I whispered, my voice coming out way too breathless, too needy.
Ryan’s lips curved into a dangerous grin that made my thighs clench.
