I couldn’t counter his reason.
Lucian went on several raids, especially when they found large rogue packs. He never took me along.
Every time I saw him return unharmed, after a fight. I always breathed a sigh of relief.
The rogues were violent and lethal. If they managed to get into our lands, they could do severe damage.
I tried to be as helpful as I could.
Aunt Flora had successfully created an antidote for the poison, that prevented many casualties. The poison included wolfsbane, silver and some expensive herb that could be imported only from the far east. That’s why Regina required money, which the rogues were providing.
“This is preposterous!” Lucian barked into the phone. I looked at him curiously as he paced in our bedroom.
“Look, I don’t care about your rather, old-fashioned sensibilities, if you don’t want them we’ll keep them in our pack!” He said and threw the phone on the bed in anger.
“What happened?” I asked.
“Alpha Adam is an ass! He is refusing to take back his girls, who were rescued from the last raid. As they are tainted.” Lucian said angrily.
“What? What does he mean by tainted?” Then the realization hit me.
With every raid, Lucian also rescued many girls and women who were kidnapped
to sate the sexual urges of the rogues. The women we took in were psychologically destroyed. Unfortunately, their human victim didn’t survive, or they were turned. We took them in as well.
They were badly traumatized. Most were returned to their packs. But some hypocrites like Alpha Adam didn’t accept back mated (as per him) females.
“How stupid and medieval!” I said in anger.
“We’ll take them in, they need a home,” I added.
“Of course, that’s what I told Adam.” He replied.
“Any news of Regina?” I asked.
“No luck so far,” he sighed.
I held his arm and rubbed it gently.
“We’ll find her, so don’t worry.” I soothed him.
“How long does this last? How many more rogue packs are there ?” I asked.
“We’ve almost cleaned out our territory. There aren’t many left. It’s as if we found just one more person, we’d be able to force out the information from him.”
A polite knock at the door indicated that Damon was there.
“Good day, my Alphas,” he said and bowed.
“Spill it out!” Lucian asked impatiently.
“We have found one more rogue pack on the other side of the city. Our tracker followed their leader, and he met a woman, late-night, near the docks. They exchanged money and something. It seems like we have found Regina.” Damon said with a smile, which reflected in Lucian’s face as well.
“Excellent work! Let’s catch that witch. now.” Lucian said.
Lucian’s POV –
“Follow the rogues when they reach the back alley,” I commanded into the radio and then waited.
I heard Rick reply with affirmative. We were near a seedy club. It was frequented by some rogues. I had not brought any of my betas with me. Neither did Rick. Daniel had his reinforcements waiting, a few streets away. We were here to just observe.
I had a feeling that the rogues were getting tipped off by some mole. It could have been anyone from any of the packs. I did not rule out the involvement of some Alphas too. Hence, to keep things discreet, we decided to keep it an Alpha only operation. So, here I was with Rick and Daniel waiting.
“They are out,” Daniel whispered.
We waited in the van and watched the rogue head off, a few minutes later. We had masked our scents.
Rick made his way out of the club, following our man.
We continued to follow him. He went to a junkyard a couple of blocks away.
We parked the van around a curve and watched him go into a small dumped trailer. It sounded like he was talking to someone. A truck dropped off several men in front of the junkyard, and I gasped.
“Those are wolves!” I exclaimed.
“I thought you had cleared off your territory,” Daniel said.
“I was wrong,” I replied.
Once the wolves were in the dump yard, we got off the van and joined Rick, who was hiding behind a huge mangled truck. They could not scent us, but we could hear them, which worked to our advantage.
“How much have you got?” A woman’s voice was heard.
“The packs are looking for us, they have finished off other gangs. You promised us power, and we have been giving you cash but looks like your spells don’t work anymore.” A gruff voice said.
“That is because you have failed to get her. We need her for the blood magic. This petty cash is not going to make you strong. Get me that girl.”
“It’s not that easy! Packs have gone into lockdown, they have military-level security, it’s impossible to breach and capture an Alpha.” The man grumbled.
“You all were stupid enough to use these bullets for capturing useless omegas and committing petty crimes. You drew too much attention. Now the packs are after you.” The woman scolded.
“Stop it, woman! We’ll get the girl. Then what?”
“Then I can create more deadly potions. Something which would be able to destroy the entire pack.”
I knew whom this conversation was about. They were talking about my mate, and it took all my self-control to not jump in and tear them to pieces. I looked over at Rick, but his countenance was stone. He had the same thought.
They argued for some time, then the rogues started to leave.
“What do we do now?” Daniel whispered.
This was a golden opportunity to capture the witch as well as the rogues, but we were uncertain if the witch was alone or with others. If we killed her, who may or may not be Regina. The danger would remain. They were splitting. The woman went off in another direction and the rogues started to mount their truck.
“Daniel, you have your enforcement ready? I asked.
He nodded.
“Good, you call in your betas and take care of the rogues. Meanwhile, Rick and I will follow the witch.”
They both nodded and within seconds Rick and I were following the witch. She started her car and sped away. We ran to our van and started following her. The night was dark as I sped through the highway. The moon was only a sliver in the sky above me. I drove with the headlights off to keep us hidden as long as I could. With my werewolf senses, I could see just fine at night.
“Might I ask what is our exact plan ?” Rick asked.
