“Enough!”
The hallway went dead silent.
Well, shit.
The professor’s timing was impeccable, and also completely ruined my chance of getting involved.
I stayed back, leaning against the wall, careful to stay hidden just out of sight. No need to earn detention today. I had other plans.
But I followed.
Silently.
Shadowing Kai and Reyes like a ghost.
Every word they exchanged, I absorbed it like oxygen.
“Why the hell is Derrick acting like that?” Reyes muttered, rubbing his shoulder. “Do you two have a thing or something?”
My heart stopped.
Yes. Good. Ask. Push. Let’s see what Kai says.
Kai shifted, face turning pink. “No. Nothing’s going on. He’s just a crazy alpha with too much testosterone and not enough brains.”
They laughed. Reyes believed it.
I didn’t.
Because Kai blushed.
Not just a little. It was the kind of blush that starts at the neck and crawls its way up the cheeks like a damn confession.
There was something.
Something both of them didn’t want to talk about.
Something private.
Something I needed to know.
I felt a pang in my chest. Not pain. Not exactly.
More like a warning.
A declaration that something that should’ve been mine was slipping through my fingers.
I didn’t care if Derrick had kissed Kai, or touched them, or just looked at them for a second too long. That was one time too many.
I’d kill him.
And Reyes.
And every other cadet who dared lay eyes on Kai. Male, female-it didn’t matter. Kai was
mine.
They just didn’t know it yet.
I followed them all the way to the training yard, eyes locked on the slight sway of Kai’s hips beneath their uniform. Every time they brushed their short hair behind their ear, every tilt of their head when Reyes spoke, I catalogued it like an addict chasing a high.
How could they smile so easily at someone else?
How could they not feel what I felt?
I waited for Reyes to leave before approaching. Kai had stayed behind to tie their boot, crouched on the grass with one knee bent and their head down.
Perfect.
I stepped forward.
“You know, it’s dangerous to be alone out here.”
Kai jumped, startled. They stood quickly, brushing grass off their pants before facing me.
“Dalton,” they said, guarded. “What do you want?”
I smiled slowly. “Just checking on you. Saw that little scene in the hallway. Derrick getting territorial?”
Their eyes narrowed. “I can handle Derrick.”
“Can you?” I took a step closer. “Because it looked like Reyes was the one doing the saving.”
That got me a glare.
“Don’t start.”
I raised my hands in mock surrender. “Hey, I’m just stating the obvious… if you need help-for anything-you know where to find me.”
Kai scoffed. “Right. In my bed. Watching me like a damn stalker while being a perv. Or better, in the Shadows like a crazy stalker”
I leaned in, letting my voice drop.
“If I’m watching, it’s because I care.”
They froze.
I saw it. That tiny flicker of uncertainty in their eyes. The way their breath hitched.
I took another step, close enough to smell their sweet scent.
Close enough to feel the heat between us.
“You should be careful who you trust,” I murmured. “Not everyone wants you for the right
reasons.”
Kai swallowed. “That’s old news to me. And you do?”
My smile turned dark.
“I want all of you. That’s more than they want.”
Their cheeks flushed again. They looked away.
I let them go.
For now.
Because soon, I’d have the cameras. I’d have the truth. I’d have the *proof* of who Kai really was-and then, they wouldn’t be able to hide anymore.
They’d be mine.
Every breath.
Every inch.
Every secret.
And Goddess help anyone who tried to take them from me.
Because I wouldn’t just watch anymore.
I’d burn the world if I had to.
I stood there long after Kai turned their back on me, fists clenched at my sides, my breath slow and controlled-barely.
They always did that. Walked away like they hadn’t just shattered me with a look, like they hadn’t just challenged everything I thought I had a grip on. Kai didn’t get it. How much I watched them. Not just for lust. Not just to sate the urge that twisted my guts every time they licked their lips or scratched the side of their neck.
No.
It was the way they moved through the world-unaware they were dragging my soul behind them with every step.
I tilted my head to the side, watching them disappear around the stone corridor. My fingers twitched. I wanted to follow. To grab them. Press them up against the wall and ask-no, demand-why they blushed when Reyes asked? Why they laughed at Reyes’ idiocy? Why they didn’t see me the way I saw them?
But not yet.
I turned on my heel and started walking toward the reception. My heart was still racing, but my co.ck throbbed with something else-anticipation. Desire. Lust.
Soon, I’d know everything.
And once I did, I’d never let them go.
Not without a fight.
Not even if they begged.
