KAI POV
How was my master plan to avoid the Alpha roommates going?
To hell.
That’s how it was going.
First Derrick-rage monster, locker slammer, neck-cracker-and now Dalton, the golden-eyed stalker with an obsession kink and the self-control of a grenade.
Can’t a girl get five minutes of peace?
Right. I wasn’t supposed to be a girl. Not really. Not going to have peace then. Not allowed.
Damn.
Where the hell was Reyes when I needed him? I missed my emotional support side-chick. He might’ve been half the reason I hadn’t snapped and tossed a desk through a window yet.
I hurried my steps, boots clicking too loud against the stone floor, heart pounding from the double dose of trouble I’d just barely escaped. Or maybe not escaped at all, considering the way Dalton’s voice was still echoing in my head.
I want all of you.
Creep.
Sexy creep.
Ugh, no.
I tugged my uniform jacket tighter around me, like that would keep the intrusive thoughts- and wolves-away. Not likely. This was Fangar Academy, the royal court of hell, testosterone, and emotional instability. And next class?
The Art of Diplomacy.
Just my luck. Taught by none other than Professor Garrett, who’d been front row for the alpha throwdown in the hallway earlier. Pretty sure he’d enjoyed it more than he was supposed to.
I was already bracing myself for a lesson with extra emotional damage when I spotted Reyes walking ahead into class.
Salvation!
I darted toward him, practically throwing my body in his direction, ready to slide into the seat beside him and whisper-vent for the next hour.
But then it happened.
The Hollowedmoon Twins. One on each side of him like a genetically blessed, sadistic wall. Same posture. Same cold stare. They flanked Reyes like he was some prized omega they were protecting-and judging at the same time.
Reyes gave me the look. The one that said, Sorry babe, I tried, paired with a helpless shrug. His mouth moved, a silent apology. I couldn’t blame him. Roommates were the curse of all introverts and rebels.
So I scanned the room and did the unthinkable.
I sat in the front row.
Alone.
Far from the alphas, the chaos, the side-glances.
It was a stupid move.
I was halfway through convincing myself I’d made the right choice when I heard it-the heavy thud of boots. Two of them. One on each side of me.
And then the smell hit.
Dalton’s sharp scent: cloves, clean linen, and danger.
Derrick’s muskier one: pine, firewood, and simmering violence.
Perfect.
Guess what Summer, my ever-sassy wolf, was doing in the back of my mind?
Laughing. Loudly.
‘Summer says hi, handsomes.’
I mentally flipped the universe the bird.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I muttered under my breath.
Neither of them said anything at first. Just sat there, like silent landmines, radiating heat and barely-restrained ego. I could feel them. Derrick’s foot was bouncing under the table like he wanted to punch someone. Dalton had that eerie stillness that only psychopaths and apex predators pulled off convincingly.
Great. So glad I wore deodorant today.
Professor Garrett began the lesson at the front of the room, his voice smooth, clipped, and far too smug for my liking. He didn’t even glance at me, but I knew. He knew what he was doing. Leaving me here. Flanked. Trapped.
“Today,” Garrett began, “we’ll cover conflict resolution strategies between Alpha-dominant territories. Trust, betrayal, and the consequences of unclear boundaries.”
I knew that smug bastard was enjoying himself.
Derrick leaned in. His voice was low and rough. “You look tense, Kai. Something bothering you?”
I didn’t look at him. “Other than the two ticking time bombs sitting beside me, I’m fantastic.”
Dalton chuckled. “If we were bombs, you’d have already gone off.”
His breath was warm against my neck. Too close. Way too close.
I snapped my head toward him. “What do you want?”
His eyes gleamed, honey-gold and unblinking. “Same thing as before. You.”
My pulse jumped.
Derrick shifted on the other side, jaw ticking. “Cut the crap, Dalton. We’re in class.”
Dalton didn’t take his eyes off me. “You care now? You’re the one who threw a tantrum in the hallway like a toddler who was denied a toy.”
Summer perked up. ‘Oooh, fight! Make them wrestle shirtless, pleeeease.’
‘Shut up, Summer!’
Professor Garrett cleared his throat loudly, his glare sweeping our row. “Mr. Dalton. Mr.
Derrick. Mr Kai. Am I interrupting something vital to international diplomacy?”
I snapped my head forward like a soldier. “No, Professor.”
Dalton grinned. “Not yet.”
Derrick snorted.
Garrett gave us a hard stare before turning back to the board.
I closed my eyes for a second and exhaled slowly, counting backward from ten.
How was my plan going?
Oh, it wasn’t just in hell.
It had gone straight to purgatory and ordered a double whiskey.
I tried to tune out the heat radiating from both sides of me.
Focus on the board. Focus on Garrett’s lecture.
Trust. Betrayal. Consequences.
Yeah, that part I could teach, thanks. No need for a guest speaker-I was living the damn syllabus.
“Let’s begin with a real-world scenario,” Professor Garrett said, walking slowly along the front row like a predator circling a pen of wounded animals. “Two Alphas. One disputed border. A peace agreement on paper, but both packs have reasons not to trust the other. One of them has recently taken in a wolf with… unclear allegiance.”
His gaze landed directly on me when he said it.
Fucking really?
I straightened my spine. I was not going to give him the satisfaction.
“Now,” Garrett continued, turning to the class. “How do you prevent war without giving up territory or trust?”
No one answered. I didn’t blame them. We’d all learned by now that participation in Professor Garrett’s class was like stepping onto a landmine.
Naturally, his eyes snapped to me again.
“Mr Kai.”
Damn it.
“What would you advise, if you were the displaced wolf?” he asked, folding his arms, enjoying himself far too much. “And you found yourself caught between two powerful Alphas, both of whom see you as… theirs.”
I stared at him. Blinking once. Slowly.
