So we both just… glare.
Tense silence stretches between us like a taut rope.
“I still don’t get how the hell the Goddess thought this would work,” I mutter, barely above a whisper. “You and me? Bound to her? Together?”
Derrick snorts under his breath. “She was drunk. Or playing cosmic truth or dare.”
I let out a soft chuckle despite myself. “And we lost.”
“No,” he says, eyes flicking down to Kai. “We won. She’s just the type of prize that could kill us both.”
…Touch?.
We fall silent again. Just breathing. Just… watching her.
“Truce?” I ask quietly, not taking my eyes off Kai.
He hesitates. “Temporary.”
I nod. “Til morning.”
He nods back.
And for once, we sit in the same room, with the same girl, and we don’t tear each other apart.
We just wait.
Because even in sleep, she’s the one keeping us sane.
I had the best night of my life. Slept like a damn baby wrapped in clouds and wolf dreams.
Until.
Derrick’s alarm.
The high-pitched chirp of synthetic torture sliced through the morning like a dagger through my skull.
I groaned, blinking against the intrusive light bleeding through the curtains, and instinctively reached out to punch something. Preferably Derrick’s face. But my arm didn’t get far.
Because that’s when I realized-
I wasn’t alone in my bed.
Kai was on me.
No, on me.
Head on my chest like I was her personal pillow, her hand curled under her cheek, her breath warm against my skin, her body curved into mine like we were carved for this. I stilled, completely and absolutely frozen, afraid that even a twitch would wake her.
And right across from me-
Derrick.
Standing by the nightstand, eyes narrowed, jaw tense as he slapped the alarm off with more force than necessary.
His gaze dropped to Kai on me. Then to my smirk.
Yeah, I smirked.
Because what can I say?
If she loves how I feel under her, I’m not gonna complain.
I’m not gonna move.
Hell, I’m not even gonna breathe too loud.
She was warm. She was soft. She was peaceful.
And for a minute, I forgot there was even another person in the room. Until Derrick moved the comforter.
And that’s when I saw it.
Her legs.
Latched onto him.
One of her thighs draped over his waist like it belonged there. Her foot tucked behind his calf, her other leg impossibly tangled with his. Like her upper half had chosen me, but her lower half had been claimed by him in the night.
I blinked.
Damn.
My smirk faltered.
Derrick met my eyes, and for one brief second, we were united in shared shock. Then the tension snapped back into place like a damn rubber band.
He lifted a brow.
I rolled my eyes.
“She’s greedy,” I muttered under my breath. “Wants both sides of the bed.”
“Or maybe she just doesn’t want to pick,” he shot back, just as quietly.
I was about to growl something entirely less polite when Kai stirred-soft and slow, letting out the tiniest whimper of contentment before nuzzling deeper into my chest… and hooking her leg tighter around Derrick’s hip.
I stared at the ceiling, silently begging the Goddess for either guidance or mercy.
This girl was going to kill us.
And we were going to let her.
I stared at the ceiling, trying to ignore the way her breath ghosted across my chest and the feel of Derrick’s smug energy radiating just inches away.
“How long till breakfast?” I asked, voice low, eyes still locked forward.
“An hour,” Derrick replied, glancing at the digital clock on Kai’s bedside table.
I tilted my head toward him, just a fraction. “Ten more minutes in heaven won’t kill us.” He didn’t argue.
We both just… stayed there.
Still.
Silent.
Careful not to move too much or wake her.
Letting her sleep, just the way she liked-wrapped around us like we were her personal furniture.
Her breathing evened out again, deep and steady, like the storm of last night hadn’t ever touched her. She looked calm. Warm. Happy.
I looked at Derrick.
He looked at me.
“I’ll wake her,” I whispered.
His eyes narrowed. “No, I will.”
“Don’t even try.”
“Touch her and I’ll cut your damn hand off.”
“Oh, real mature, Derrick-“
ZAP.
My body jolted, every nerve in my spine lighting up like someone plugged me into a lightning storm.
Derrick cursed under his breath, jerking back slightly with the same shock pulsing through his limbs.
Then we heard her voice.
“I’m awake,” Kai growled, eyes still shut but clearly done pretending. “Stop arguing. I can’t keep electrocuting the both of you every damn minute.”
She cracked one eye open, glaring at us both.
I swallowed a laugh and rubbed my arm where the zap hit hardest.
“You could’ve just said good morning,” I muttered.
She rolled onto her back, somehow taking all the sheets with her in the process.
I did,” she said flatly. “Your brains just don’t register kindness unless it’s laced with pain.”
