Derrick scoffed beside me, but didn’t deny it.
Because honestly?
She wasn’t wrong.
Not one bit
KAI POV
The best night of sleep in my life. Damn.
And it had to be sandwiched between them.
I woke up to the unmistakable sound of alpha-level bickering, the kind that didn’t require volume to still shake the air with tension. I didn’t need to open my eyes to know what was happening. I could feel it. Derrick glaring daggers into Dalton’s smug smirk. Dalton pretending not to notice while silently challenging Derrick with his heartbeat alone.
I sighed inwardly.
Sure, maybe I was a bit sprawled on both of them. My legs tangled with Derrick’s, my arm across Dalton’s chest like he was my personal body pillow. Whatever. I’ve always been a restless sleeping lady. Nothing to worry about.
‘Sure… if you say so… Summer snorted inside my mind, all too pleased with herself. “We both know it’s the mate bond starting its job.”
I didn’t answer her. Not even a little. Not today.
We had a deal-me and my inner wolf. A week. One week of peace before I had to face whatever cosmic joke the Goddess thought this was. Until then, I could blissfully ignore just how stupidly attractive both of them were. No tingles. No maddening scents messing with my senses. Just two hot guys who happened to share a bed with me.
Nothing else.
Well. Until I had to electrocute them.
Again.
I let a small electric zap loose, and both alphas jolted like I’d jammed a fork in a toaster. Satisfying.
“I’m awake,” I growled, prying my eyes open. “Stop arguing. I can’t keep electrocuting the both of you every damn minute.”
They both mumbled some variation of apology and sat there awkwardly, trying not to look like their pride had been fried.
Typical.
I sat up, sheets falling off my body as I stretched. My back cracked in a way that had both of them stiffening.
“I’m going to take a shower,” I said, standing and padding across the room. “And if you’re thinking of watching through the cameras-I will know. And I will fry your asses. Got it?”
“Got it,” they muttered in unison, eyes slightly averted.
I was halfway to the bathroom door when Derrick added, far too casually:
“Can we stay in the bathroom with you?”
I stopped.
Turned.
Brows raised.
“…Closed eyes,” he added, somehow making it worse. “Just to be sure you’re okay.”
“To be sure I’m okay?” I repeated, blinking. “In a shower? In a bathroom in our shared room? Are you insane, Derrick?!”
His lips twitched like he was about to grin but knew better.
“It’s not personal,” Dalton cut in. “We’re not pervs. We just… need to stay close. At least before breakfast, you’re not eating enough… In case you faint. Sugar low… Or, I don’t know, summon a thunderstorm.”
“Or combust the plumbing,” Derrick added helpfully.
I narrowed my eyes. “You do know how insane this sounds, right?”
“We’re aware,” Dalton said, not even pretending to be sorry.
I stared at them for a moment longer, then slammed the bathroom door behind me.
I leaned against it for a second, chest rising and falling, Summer was howling with laughter in the back of my mind.
‘They’re both so into you it’s pathetic.’
‘Shut up, I told her, flipping on the water.
‘Just saying. I wouldn’t mind one of them in the shower. Especially the one with the hands-
‘SUMMER.’
She snickered, retreating just enough to let me think. I stripped down, stepping under the hot spray and trying to let it wash away the static still buzzing under my skin.
But even in the solitude of steam and silence, I could feel them. Their presence lingering just outside the bathroom like guard dogs. No-more like two massive, growly wolves guarding their mate.
Mate.
I pressed my forehead against the tile.
Nope. Not thinking about it.
I had a week.
A whole week before I had to make a decision.
So for now, I’d focus on classes, training and not be caught up in any funny business with two hot alphas.
Easy peasy.
Right?!
Hot water helped.
A little.
But nothing ever really fixed the heaviness that came after. That bone-deep ache in my chest -not emotional, no, but literal. Because now came the worst part of every morning.
I dried off quickly and walked over to the tiny cabinet built into the bathroom wall. Pulled out the tight black wraps I’d folded the night before, the ones that flattened what was otherwise… hard to ignore.
I bound.
Tight.
Too tight, probably. It always left marks. Bruises sometimes. But it worked.
I gritted my teeth and pulled the fabric across my chest, winding and locking it in place. The pressure made it hard to breathe for a second, and I had to lean against the wall.
‘You okay?’ Summer whispered.
‘Don’t.’
She fell silent.
Good. Because I wasn’t in the mood.
Once that was done, I reached for the chain on the sink. The charm at the end shimmered faintly, reacting to my touch.
I clipped the charm around my neck and exhaled slowly, grounding myself. There. Back to normal. Controlled. Quiet. Safe.
Or so I thought.
Suddenly-
Bang. Bang. BANG.
“Kai?!”
Dalton’s voice, deep and alarmed.
Followed by Derrick’s, sharp and clipped: “She’s gone. I can’t smell her. I can’t feel her.”
Oh, for the love of-
“KAI?! OPEN THE DOOR.”
I rolled my eyes so hard I saw stars.
Stupid alphas. Goddess forbid I stop smelling like a walking buffet of hormones for ten
seconds.
“She was JUST there,” Derrick was saying, panic rising. “I swear, I felt her. And then-nothing.”
I finished adjusting the black slacks of the training uniform, zipped up the thick gray jacket with the academy crest on the chest, and smoothed a hand over my bound torso. Boots laced. Face unreadable.
Then I walked over and opened the door.
