“Oh, little mouse,” I called after her, voice smooth as silk over razors. “You forgot something.”
She froze.
“We have the same schedule.”
Dalton chimed in behind me, his tone all smug velvet. “Yes, sunshine. Combat training. First class.”
Kai’s whole body tensed.
She didn’t turn around.
She didn’t curse.
Not immediately.
Just a long, slow inhale.
Then-
“Fuck,” she muttered under her breath, stomping off with that furious sway in her hips that made my wolf growl.
She didn’t get far.
We were already moving-me and Dalton, right behind her like lovesick puppies with a death wish.
Who knew when the Twins would strike?
And there was no way in hell I was letting Reyes slink in and woo her with that golden retriever energy of his.
DALTON POV
I did like that Derrick brought Kai breakfast.
And that he included me too.
I’m not petty. I keep score in silence.
But that moment? The way he slid her coffee in front of her, like he was offering tribute to a Queen? The way she took it-like it was hers by right? I didn’t mind it.
Not really.
Because Kai deserved that. All of it.
What I didn’t like was the reason behind it.
He was tied to her. Same as me.
Fate’s sick little joke. Binding two monsters to the same girl like she was salvation.
Like she could fix what was broken in us.
But if that meant she was safer, I was all in.
I’d burn down the world before I let anyone touch her.
Even if that meant standing beside the man I would’ve gutted in a different life..
Kai rolled her eyes before storming off, muttering something about needing to go to class.
Like she could just leave.
Like she could walk into a campus crawling with testosterone and bloodthirst and think no one would follow.
Cute.
I let it slide.
For now.
But later? When we were behind closed doors and I wasn’t on the hook anymore for the
Gods-damned cameras I installed?
She was going to learn what that little minx routine of hers did to me.
And I was going to enjoy teaching her.
Every. Fucking. Second.
My c**k was already hard from the way she chewed that cinnamon roll, like it was daring us to do something about it.
Her attitude was a weapon.
And Shade-my wolf-was licking his chops like she was already on the floor, pinned beneath
‘Little thing doesn’t know what she’s playing with,’ he rumbled in my head, low and feral.
‘She will.’
We followed her in silence.
No footsteps out of place.
No talking.
Just two shadows at her back.
She knew we were there.
She didn’t say anything, didn’t glance over her shoulder..
But her scent told me plenty.
Slight elevation in heart rate.
I could smell the caffeine pulsing through her system. Sugar. Cinnamon. Female.
Heat.
Shade growled again, and I had to grind my teeth just to stay level.
The training grounds came into view-bare, wide, with soft dirt underfoot and steel racks lined with weapons standing like grave markers.
Alpha Leo was already there, barking instructions at a few stragglers.
He was a second son-not an heir, not the next Alpha-but strong enough to earn his place.
And I respected him for that. He wasn’t handed his power. He built it.
Fangar Academy was lucky to have him.
He looked up when we arrived, giving a curt nod in our direction. I returned it, just once, before my eyes tracked back to her.
To Kai.
Gods, she moved like smoke.
All sharp edges and hidden curves and too much energy packed into that lithe body.
I wanted to wrap a leash around her throat and tell her she was mine.
But I kept my hands in my pockets, teeth clenched, voice still buried somewhere deep in my
chest.
“Alright,” Leo barked. “Today we’re pairing up for contact drills. I want sparring, not murder. Leave your grudges at the door.”
A few groans, some chuckles.
Then he started calling out names.
I could feel the tension tighten in my spine.
If someone touched her-if some asshole even looked like he was going to land a hit on Kai
I didn’t know if I’d be able to stop myself.
‘Let them try, Shade snarled.
‘Let them bleed for it.’ he added, and I could feel his anger radiating off.
“Ravi with Theo.”
“Kieran with Brian.”
“Jax with Asher.”
