“No. Is something wrong?”
I wanted to tell Zoey everything that was happening, but I suddenly changed my mind and decided not to let her know.
“No, nothing’s wrong,” I replied.
There was silence between us for a few seconds before she spoke up.
“I’ll inquire from as many people as I can. Let’s meet at our favorite restaurant in an hour.”
She didn’t give me a chance to respond and ended the call immediately after.
I sighed deeply because I had no choice but to meet her. I wasn’t in the mood to freshen up.
I got into my car and drove out of the house. About 30 minutes later, I arrived at the restaurant Zoey had asked us to meet at. To steady my mental health, I came earlier than she had asked and ordered only water. I couldn’t seem to take my mind off what had happened last night.
I had thought the news about the baby would put a smile on Leo’s face, but I was wrong. I wiped the tears that had rolled down my cheek and sniffled.
“Pull yourself together, Selene. Leo’s going to come around soon.” Because the mate bond was broken, it felt different.
“Selene.” I heard Zoey’s voice as she ran to me and took her seat. I would say Zoey was more like a detective.
“Look at you. Oh goodness, you look so horrible, sissy.”
I had no idea my eyes were fat and swollen or that my lips were so dry.
“You look pale and frustrated. Tell me, Selene, what’s wrong? I’m your best friend, so start spilling.”
I clamped my lips and looked away from Zoey for a few seconds.
“I’m pregnant!” I started, but Zoey burst out in joy before I could finish. I waited patiently for her to squeal as much as she could, but when she saw I did not have a smile on my face, she stopped and held my hand.
“You’re pregnant, so what’s wrong? I know how much you’ve always wanted to hear this news. Leo is definitely overjoyed, right?”
Tears brimmed in my eyes again as I shook my head.
“No, no he isn’t. I never expected I would lose my husband the very day I received the best news of my life.”
“What? What are you talking about, Selene?”
“He rejected me. Leo rejected me last night. There has to be a misunderstanding somewhere. I have to find out what’s wrong with my husband.”
Zoey gasped aloud, but I could tell she wasn’t shocked. She scoffed, “Everyone knew Alpha Leo wasn’t really a fan of women. I was worried you’d get hurt, Selene. I’m so sorry. That bastard needs some sense shoved right into his brain and…” She stared at me, rage flashing in her eyes, then paused.
“But I believe he loved you, Selene. Have faith in your relationship, and it’s going to work out fine.”
Just as I was about to say a word, Zoey’s phone rang.
“Excuse me.” She rose to her feet and answered, walking a short distance away.
A few minutes later, Zoey came back-but without a smile on her face.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen?” I asked anxiously, not liking the look on her face.
“A friend of mine found Leo.”
“That’s great news, right?”
She raised her phone and showed me a photo that had been sent to her. In it, I saw Leo with a couple of his friends I had never seen before, in a clubhouse.
“Where is he?”
“It’s an exclusive clubhouse.”
Staring at the surroundings, I could tell it was incredibly expensive.
“How do we get in?”
She smiled confidently and revealed that her family partially owned the club and that she was practically a boss there.
“We can get in even without a penny.”
I rose to my feet. I wasn’t ready to waste another second because I was worried. What could possibly be so serious to make my husband go to a club? Leo always cared so much about his reputation; he would never risk it for anything.
We quickly headed to the club, and as Zoey and I entered, I could smell the strong stench of alcohol and cigarettes. The atmosphere was lively, but my eyes carefully scanned the crowd for Leo.
My heart nearly sank when I saw a man and a woman kissing, but I couldn’t tell if it was Leo because he had his back to me. His hands were wrapped lovingly around her waist, and I watched as the crowd cheered them on.
When the kiss ended, he turned around-and to my astonishment, the man being kissed was my husband. Our eyes met immediately. Leo let go of her hand while she turned to face me.
The first thing I noticed was the striking resemblance she had to me. I strained my tired eyes to look closer, and I saw she had the same beauty mark at the corner of her left eye-and a moon-shaped tattoo on her left shoulder as well.
Who the hell was this mystery girl, and why on earth did she bear my marks and look so much like me?
I stood frozen, transfixed by what I had just seen. I could tell she was just as surprised as I was-seeing someone who looked exactly like her and bore the same marks.
I had always hidden the mark on my shoulder because my parents made me believe it was an abomination, even though I was never told why I had it. I always thought I was the only one in the entire world with such a mark, but today I was proven wrong. I felt even more insulted and disgusted that Leo had cheated on me with a girl who looked like me.
Zoey, clearly furious, walked up to the stage and snatched the microphone from the DJ to get the attention she needed.
