“I’m sure you did pretty well.”
I nodded, and we began heading toward the car. The drive home wasn’t silent because Zoey and I had a lot to talk about. When I stopped the car, I couldn’t wait to go inside and see my precious babies.
“Mommy.”
“Mommy.”
“Mommy.”
My kids all called my name in unison as they ran to me, and I hugged them tightly.
“I missed you all so much. Now tell me, kids, what did you do today at school?”
I stared at Karla, my daughter, who had a gloomy look on her face.
“What’s wrong, baby? Did something happen at school?”
“We were bullied again today, Mommy. Everyone thinks Daddy ran away and didn’t want us.”
“Oh goodness,” I said, holding my daughter close. My boys were really strong, but Karla wasn’t. She was just as softhearted as I was, and I knew she got that from me. I couldn’t blame her either.
“Come on, baby, don’t ever believe whatever anyone says about your daddy, okay? What do I always tell you?”
“Daddy loves us so much.”
I heaved deeply and kissed her forehead, even though I knew it was all a big lie. He abandoned them and called them bastards.
“Let’s go in.”
As I entered with Zoey and the kids, I was stopped by one of the kids’ nannies.
“What’s wrong?”
“There’s a letter for you, ma’am.”
I nodded and took the letter. The moment I saw the Moon Shadow Pack seal, my heart skipped a beat. I quickly tucked the letter into my bag.
“Zoey, take the kids upstairs. I’ll be with you shortly,” I said, trying not to panic so the kids wouldn’t suspect anything.
Once they were gone, I took a seat on the two-seater sofa and took out the letter. At first, I hesitated to open it, but then I did. It read…
“Dear Doctor Lena Everhart, we hope this letter reaches you just in time. A great disease has befallen the pack, and as a result, your attention and expertise are urgently needed in the Moon Shadow Pack, with great benefits to follow. Please write back as soon as you receive this letter. Thank you, and we hope to see you soon.”
With a burning rage fueling me inside, I folded the letter and threw it into the dustbin. Then I scoffed aloud, “Now he needs my help?”
If there was one thing I was sure of, it was that I would never offer any help to his pack. Never.
-Lena’s POV-
It’s late. After putting the kids to bed, I decide to go downstairs for a drink before going to bed as my mind is all over the place.
I go to the sitting room and see Zoey drinking a glass of whiskey. I walk to the kitchen to get my glass and join her in the sitting room.
I gulped down a glass of whiskey in one go.
“Ahhh…” I sighed.
“What’s wrong? Is something the matter?” Zoey asked.
I sighed again, contemplating whether to tell Zoey that I had received a letter from Alpha Leo of the Moon Shadow Pack requesting my help to eradicate a disease that had befallen them.
“I got a letter from the Moon Shadow Pack saying they need my help to find a cure for a disease that is affecting and killing them-“
Zoey cut me off, “Wait, Moon Shadow Pack? Do you mean the Moon Shadow Pack we know? Alpha Leo?”
“Uh… yes,” I replied with a frown.
“What the heck? What does he want from you now? Rejecting and publicly humiliating you isn’t enough for him? What else does he want?” Zoey said, furious at the news. She was just as angry as I was, if not more.
“So, Lena, tell me-are you going to accept the request?” she asked with a sad and worried look on her face. I could tell she was genuinely worried about me. The past six years haven’t been easy, but Zoey has been with me all the way. I understood her concern-that Leo might try something to put me back in the state I once was in.
I looked up at her.
“Never. I’ll never help Alpha Leo, not after everything I went through at his hands,” I said, trying hard to hold back the tears threatening to fall.
Zoey breathed a sigh of relief.
“Lena, it’s okay. You know what’s best for you. Whatever decision you make, I’ll support you.”
I hugged her tightly.
“Thank you, Zoey. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. Thank you for the encouragement,” I told her, holding back hot tears. Honestly, Zoey has been the best gift anyone could wish for.
It’s been a week now. I went back to my normal daily routine-going to work and picking up the kids from school when I had the chance. But at the back of my mind, I had this foreboding feeling that this wasn’t over with the Moon Shadow Pack.
I wrote back to Leo telling him I couldn’t help him, that I had prior engagements. But I know Leo-even though he doesn’t know I’m his Selene-if he’s determined to get me to help the pack, he won’t relent.
I drove into the building in my red Ferrari, eager to see my little devils. I parked in the garage.
