“Are you two…?” he trails off.
“Are we together? Is that what you wanted to ask?” I ask him.
“Yes,” he responds.
“We do have kids together, so yes, we are together, engaged even,” I tell him.
“That’s great, but I couldn’t help but notice that there’s no mention of him online. They only mention you and your children,” he says.
“Have you been reading up on me, Leo?” I ask.
“I won’t deny it, yes, I have. But you still haven’t answered my question,” he says.
“I told you I wasn’t going to answer all your questions,” I tell him, firm in my stance. I shouldn’t have entertained the conversation in the first place.
“That’s enough with the questions,” I tell him.
“Just one more, and I promise I’ll stop for now,” he says, and I don’t miss the “for now” at the end of his sentence.
I stop walking and turn to face him. “Okay, what is it?” I ask.
“Why did you lie about your kids’ ages?” he asks.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I tell him, immediately turning away so he doesn’t catch me looking at him and see that I’m lying.
“You do know what I’m talking about. There are several articles about you, and most of them mention the kids’ ages. They’re not four, as you said; they’re five. Which means there’s a very high possibility that they’re…”
“That they’re what?” I ask, cutting him off, but I don’t give him a chance to finish.
“That they’re yours?” he asks. I laugh hysterically for a moment, but then, in an instant, all I can feel is anger.
“Those children aren’t yours. Yes, I was pregnant when you rejected me, but after you blatantly rejected me and the baby, the pain was so much that I lost the baby. So no, Leo, you are not their father. And this is the last time I’ll talk about it and that you’ll bring it up. You chose Scarlett over me, so you don’t have any right to ask me all these questions about my life, acting like you care. I’m here to do a job, and that’s it. I want to keep the past in the past,” I tell him.
“I’m sorry, you’re right. I’ll stop with the questions,” he says, looking chastised.
“Good,” I reply, and then we continue our walk back to the clinic in silence.
“You said you didn’t sleep well. Is there something wrong with the house?” he asks.
“No, the house is great. It’s just that the kids aren’t used to it yet, so I had to stay up with them,” I explain.
“Oh, okay,” he says. He looks like he wants to say more but decides against it.
We finally get to the building that has been converted into a hospital, but just as I’m about to open the door, Leo stops me.
“Wait a minute, what’s stopping you from getting sick once we go in there?” he asks.
“Trust me, I’ll be fine. Let’s go in,” I tell him, but he still doesn’t budge.
“Why do you think I majored in infectious diseases?” I asked him, and he shook his head.
“For reasons unknown to me, I can’t get infected. No matter the disease, be it man-made or witch-made, it doesn’t work on me. So, open the doors, Leo,” I tell him.
He looks at me one last time, probably to see if I’m telling the truth or lying, and then he opens the doors and we step in.
“Alpha Leo, you’re early today,” a nurse comes out to greet him.
“Yeah, I know, but I brought the doctor over. Katy, this is Doctor Lena Everhart,” Leo tells her, and she looks at him like he’s crazy.
“What are you talking about, Alpha Leo? This is Scarlett, your wife,” Katy tells him.
“Oh, I assure you, I’m not Scarlett. I am who he says I am,” I tell her.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, it’s just that you look so much like Luna Scarlett,” she apologizes.
“It’s fine, I see it too, but I can’t explain it,” I tell her.
“So, you’re the one who’s going to find a cure for us?” she asks me.
“Hopefully. Let’s see these patients first,” I tell her.
“Of course, come with me, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I want to help in any way I can,” she tells me.
“Thank you, Katy. Actually, there is something you can help me with. I’m looking for our patient zero. Do you know which kid got sick first, and if he or she is still alive?” I ask her.
She frowns as she thinks. “Actually, yes, I do. Brie. She was the first to get sick. Her parents brought her to me, and I thought it was just the flu, so I gave her a shot, but she didn’t get any better. A few days later, more kids got sick. A week later, we had our first death,” she explains.
“Okay, so tell me, is Brie still alive?” I ask.
-Lena’s pov-
-I held my breath, waiting for Katy to give me an answer. I really didn’t want to dig up a little girl; yes, it was necessary, but that didn’t mean I liked it.
“Actually, she is, but she’s unresponsive. She’s in a coma and isn’t getting any better. It’s worse,” Katy explained to me.
“Ok, that’s good. Can you take me to her room, and I’m going to need her chart?” I asked.
“Of course, Doctor Lena. Just follow me,” Katy responded, and Leo and I followed behind her.
