Chapter 19 – His Replica Mate

“Was it that bad?” he asked.

“No, actually it wasn’t. She really surprised me. She’s so different now. I tried to apologize, and she immediately called me out on it,” I told him.

“Then why exactly are you smiling?” he asked.

“I don’t know, she’s just a breath of fresh air. I don’t know how else to explain it. I asked her about the kids and if they were mine,” I told him.

“Why would you do that?” he asked, frowning.

“I had to know. The dates were just too lined up,” I said.

“So what did she say?” he asked.

“She said they’re not mine, that the pain from the rejection made her lose the baby,” I told him.

“I’m sorry, Leo, but it does happen; we hear about things like that all the time,” he said.

“Yeah, yeah, I know that,” I said.

“But why does it sound like you don’t believe it?” he asked.

“No, I do, I do, it’s just for a second there, I thought that it was possible,” I explained.

“I understand; everything will work out, Leo. But what are you going to do about Scarlett? You know she won’t let this go,” Zeo said.

I grumbled and ran my hands through my hair. “Where and how did it go so wrong, Zeo? I mean, every day I wrack my mind to see where we went wrong so that I’ll know how to fix it, but it’s like the more I try to fix us, the worse it gets,” I said.

“I know, I know, but whatever your problem is, you can’t let it affect Lena’s work,” Zeo told me.

“I know that, she even told me that she would leave if Scarlett caused her any trouble,” I said.

“That can’t happen,” he said.

“I know, I’ll handle Scarlett. This is much bigger than her, and I’ve let it go on for too long, but I can’t let her jeopardize this,” I tell him.

“So what do you want to do?” he asked me.

“First of all, I need to find out where the hell she keeps running off to every day that makes her forget that she’s the Luna and has responsibilities to this pack. I need you to find someone to follow her. Tell Gabe he’s good at tracking and keeping himself invisible. I need to know where she’s going and who she’s meeting up with,” I explain to Zeo.

“Alright, I’ll let Gabe know. But what are you hoping to get out of this?” he asked me.

“I just need to know,” I tell him. I don’t tell him what I’m really thinking, which is that Scarlett is cheating on me.

“Ok then, but until then, how are you going to keep her away from Lena?” he asked me.

“I know how to handle Scarlett; I’ve been too lenient with her, but that all stops today,” I tell him.

“Finally,” he says and lets out a huge sigh.

“What do you mean finally?” I asked him, confused.

“I’ve held my tongue all these years as you’ve let that woman walk all over you. But now, finally, you’re back, my friend. The Alpha is back.”

-Lena’s pov-

As soon as I enter my lab, I lean against the wall and let out a deep sigh of relief. I did it-I survived spending time with him. I didn’t think I could, but I did. He seemed to believe my lie about the kids, and he also appeared sincere in his apology, but it doesn’t change what he did to me.

There was also some serious tension between him and Scarlett; it looks like all is not well in their paradise. I need to go home, see my kids, have a glass of wine, and talk this over with Zoey. I glance at my watch-it’s just one in the afternoon. I can’t leave now; I still have time to kill.

I push Leo out of my mind and walk into the lab. “Good afternoon, Doctor Everhart,” Emmett, my lab assistant, greets me.

“Good afternoon, Emmett. Did you just get in?” I ask, scanning the lab and noticing that he’s already started working. He’s washed all the beakers, and they’re currently drying while another set is getting sterilized.

“Yes, I came straight here,” he replies, removing more equipment from its packaging.

“You didn’t have to do that, Emmett. You should’ve gone home to get some rest; all this can wait,” I tell him as I walk over to help open more cartons.

“I know, but I’m not tired. I stayed up all night reading the charts you sent me. This disease… I’ve never seen anything like it before. It’s so clever in the way it spreads, it’s going to be so hard to figure out,” he says, speaking a mile a minute.

“Emmett, Emmett. Take a deep breath for me, please,” I tell him, unable to stop myself from smiling.

He pauses and takes a few deep breaths. “There, much better. I’m excited about tackling this disease too. You’re right-it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen. I know you’re excited, but you have to remember that people are sick and dying, okay?” I remind him.

“Yes, Lena, I do know that. I didn’t mean to seem-“

“No, I completely understand. No one understands more than me,” I assure him.

“Okay, are you just getting in?” he asks.

“No, I was here first thing this morning. I even went to the clinic to see the sick. I told the nurse you’d be coming over to take some samples,” I tell him.

“Okay, how did they look?” he asks, and immediately, my mind flashes back to the sick children.

“Not good. Not good at all. But luckily, we have our patient X-or who I assume is our patient X. Her name is Brle, and according to the nurse, she was the first to get sick,” I explain to him.

“And she’s still alive?” he asks.

“Yeah, I know. I was shocked, too. I expected her to be dead. She’s alive, but she’s in a coma. She’s the one I need you to get samples from first. I need everything-blood, saliva, hair follicles-everything. If we’re going to understand and cure this disease, she’s the key,” I tell him.
