The stew is well-spiced. “Yeah, actually, he did. Apparently, he googled me and found out that I lied about the kids’ ages,” I tell her.
“So, what did you tell him?” she asks.
“I told him that the kids weren’t his and that I lost our child due to the rejection,” I say.
“Yeah, that’s a good story. Very believable,” she says.
“So, who did you tell him was their father? I know Leo, and he wouldn’t have just let it go like that. Unfortunately, the two of us are similar in that regard,” she says.
“I told him that I was engaged to their father, but he didn’t come down here with us because he had some business to attend to. He would come and visit,” I tell her.
“He believed you?” Zoey asks.
“Yes, he did,” I reply.
“I have to admit, it’s a good lie. But what happens when your fiance and their father don’t show up? Because he isn’t real,” Zoey asks.
“It’s not like he’ll notice,” I tell her.
“You and I both know that’s a lie. He suspects those kids are his. Plus, he’s the Alpha; no one enters his pack without him knowing,” Zoey says.
“I know, I know. I’ll figure something out,” I tell her.
“Or me and the kids could just go back. How long do you think it will take you to find a cure?” she asks.
“I have no idea. I haven’t started examining the samples yet, but just hearing stories, looking at the charts, and the death toll… it’s going to take some time. You and the kids leaving now isn’t a good idea. It will just make Leo even more suspicious. But that’s all he has-suspicions and no evidence. And we’ll keep it that way. He isn’t getting his hands on the kids,” I explain to Zoey.
“Alright then. Whatever you decide, I’ll follow your lead,” Zoey says.
“Thank you, Zoey. You’re such a good friend-and aunt. Me and the kids are very lucky,” I tell her.
“You know I love you guys, and I just want you to be happy. So, what do you say after the kids wake up, we go for a walk? They really need it,” Zoey says.
“Of course, I can take them. You’ve been with them all day, and you cooked. Take this opportunity to get some rest; I know it’s not easy taking care of them,” I tell her.
“Thanks, Lee. I need a nap and a shower,” she says as she sniffs her shirt, and I start laughing.
It’s not easy taking care of kids-they somehow have this abundance of energy, and it’s tough to keep up with them. And she has to take care of all three of them.
By the time we’re done eating and have put away the dishes, the first to wake up is Luke, followed soon by Liam and Karla.
It’s a little chilly outside, so I bundle them up in their coats. We say goodbye to Zoey, and we leave the house. It was easier going on walks with them when they couldn’t walk yet, and I had the stroller, but now it’s not so easy because they can run off at any time.
I hold onto Liam and Karla’s hands because they’re the most likely to run off, while Luke walks in front of me.
“Alright, you know how this goes-no running off. If you do, there will be no more walks,” I tell them, and they all nod their heads.
“Alright then, let’s go,” I say, but all of a sudden, I feel eyes on me. I turn around, and Leo is right there.
“Do you mind if I join you?” he asks.
Shit, no, no, no. This can’t be happening right now. What the hell is he doing here?
There’s no way the kids are going to agree to go back into the house, not when we’re already outside and they’ve been looking forward to this walk.
I currently have my back to Leo, so I slowly turn around to face him, still holding both kids’ hands. Thankfully, my body blocks Luke, and since Karla hasn’t seen Leo before, she hides behind my leg. But Lian-he keeps staring at Leo.
“Hi, what are you doing here?” I ask him, hoping I can get him to leave before Luke decides to make his presence known.
“I wanted to talk about what happened back at the lab,” he tells me.
“Oh, we don’t need to talk about that. It’s all good, water under the bridge,” I say, hoping he’ll take my word for it and leave.
“Mummy, who are you talking to?” Luke asks from behind me. He then walks to the front and stands by his sister.
Fuck, fuck, fuck. I mean, I could get away with it if it was just Liam and Karla, but there’s no way I can convince Leo that Luke isn’t his. He looks exactly like him-all their features are the same. They even smile and smirk the same way.
“That’s mummy’s new boss,” Liam tells his brother after I take too long to answer.
Luke and Leo share the same look as they stare at each other. I don’t know what to do or say. I’m just stuck. Leo walks closer and squats in front of Luke. Every cell in my body wants to grab my son and hide him behind me, but that would just make me look guilty.
“What’s your name?” Leo asks Luke.
As the good boy that he is, Luke looks over to me first, asking for permission. I nod, and then he turns back to Leo.
“My name is Luke. What’s your name?” Luke asks.
“I’m Leonard, but you can call me Leo,” Leo says.
“It’s nice to meet you. That’s my brother Liam and my sister Karla,” Luke says to him.
Leo just stared at all three of them, and I saw a sad look cross his face, but it quickly disappeared. He stood up and faced me.
“So you guys are going on a walk?” he asked.
“Yeah, we are. The kids have been stuck in the house for days. I didn’t want them roaming about because of the sickness,” I told him.
“Yeah, I understand,” he says, but he still makes no move to leave.
