Life’s Spiced Up with Some Werewolf Reads

Chapter 24 – His Replica Mate

She slowly turned around to look at me, and when I saw the fear in her eyes, that made the decision for me. I treated her badly, that’s the truth, and she’s scared of me finding out about the kids. I don’t know why, but she is.

Am I angry that she’s kept them away from me all these years? Hell, yes, I am. But nothing good will come of me confronting her. She could very easily just pack up the kids and leave, and I won’t be able to find her.

I can’t be selfish; I’m not the only one who will be affected if she leaves. I have my pack to think about. If she leaves, the hope of finding a cure goes with her.

If I keep my suspicions to myself, then at least she and the kids will be here at the pack. I’ll have the time to regain her trust and then bring up the topic of the kids. Maybe she’ll finally open up and tell me about them.

But first, I need to find out if she was lying about the man in her life because the only man meant to be in her life and the kids’ lives is me.

“They’re really good kids,” I tell her, and I can see the shock on her face. She wasn’t expecting those to be the words I’d say to her.

“Yeah, they are,” she replies, but she still has that suspicious look on her face.

“I take it that Liam is the wild one?” I ask, and that brings a smile to her face.

“You got that right, he’s the wild one. It’s like he’s filled with this endless amount of energy. He’s always buzzing,” she says, then walks closer.

“Luke, on the other hand, is the smart and observant one. Not that the others aren’t smart-they are. But Luke is different; his intelligence can rival that of an adult. I’ve been holding off on testing him because I know what the test is going to say. The moment I do that, everything is going to change, and I want him to be a kid for as long as he can,” she explains to me.

“I get it. Being a gifted child isn’t easy. But he has you and his siblings, so I’m sure everything will work out just fine. What does their father have to say about it?” I ask her, and she looks at me with a confused look on her face.

She’s probably wondering if I’m just pulling her leg or if I really haven’t put two and two together-that the kids are mine.

She quickly schools her expression. “I haven’t talked to him about it,” she tells me.

“You should. It isn’t good to keep secrets in a relationship,” I tell her, quickly realizing that was the wrong thing to say.

“I know that, and you don’t have any right to give me advice on my relationships,” she snaps at me.

After all these years, she still has that fire in her. I have to admit, it just makes me want her even more. “I know, and I apologize for overstepping,” I tell her, and she just nods her head, going back to watching the kids.

“How are things going at the lab?” I ask her.

“Well, my assistant is here. I had him go get some samples at the clinic, so the real work starts tomorrow. Which reminds me, do you know where Brie’s parents stayed?” she asks me.

“Yeah, their house was close to the lake. Why do you ask?” I reply.

“Well, because I need to look at everything, including the environment. Since Brie was the first to get sick, I need to check on everyone she was around that week before she got sick-her house, her school, even her parents. They could’ve easily been the ones to bring in the disease, but they didn’t get sick immediately,” she explains to me, and I stay quiet for a few moments.

“So, you need to get samples from all these places?” I ask her.

“Yes, I do. If the blood samples aren’t enough, I’ll need to,” she tells me.

“Okay, getting samples from the house and where her parents worked shouldn’t be an issue, but I’ll need to talk to her school first,” I tell her.

“Sure, thanks for the assist. If I may ask, where did her parents work?” she asks.

“They worked at my company,” I reply, and she has this shocked expression on her face.

“Oh…” she says, trailing off.

“Yes, most of the pack members who don’t have jobs elsewhere work there,” I tell her.

“That’s really nice of you,” she says.

“Well, it was really a no-brainer. They’re all hardworking and loyal, so it works in my favor,” I tell her.

“Yeah, that is true,” she says with a little smirk on her face.

“It’s getting dark,” she murmurs to herself.

“Luke!” she shouts, and the little boy immediately stops what he’s doing and turns around to face her.

“It’s getting late, sweetie. Get your brother and sister; it’s time to head back to the house,” she tells him, and he nods his head.

“Wow, that was easy,” I tell her.

“Yeah, Luke is a pretty easy kid. He barely whines or complains, unlike the other two, but they both listen to him; he’s their big brother,” she tells me.

I have so many questions I want to ask her about the kids, but I know now is not the time. I don’t want her clamming up or anything like that.

If I want her to tell me the truth and open up to me, I’m going to have to be patient. This is going to be more like a marathon, but even though it might be long, I am sure of one thing: at the end of the day, Lena and the kids will be back where they belong-with me.

Lena’s POV

Leo walks back with us to the house, and then he says goodnight to the kids. I’m so confused; in fact, I’ve been confused ever since he saw Luke and didn’t say anything.

My sweet, shy Karla gives him a hug, Liam high-fives him and tells him to come back the next day, and then finally, Luke steps up and shakes his hand. He tells him goodnight and also asks him to come by soon.

Then, finally, it’s my turn. In my head, I’m thinking, this is finally it; this is the moment he’s been waiting for to ask me about the kids.

But he doesn’t say anything. He simply leans down and kisses me on the cheek, then steps back. “Goodnight, Lena. I’ll see you tomorrow,” he says, and then he waves to the kids and walks away.

“Mummy, boss man is cool. I like him,” Liam tells me as he strolls into the house.

“I like him too,” Karla says, and my heart breaks. My sweet baby girl, who has a very hard time connecting to people, had no problem connecting with Leo. Did I make a mistake? Should I have pushed more and tried harder after I gave birth to the kids?

Doubt starts trickling into my mind, but then Luke takes my hand, and all the voices in my head quiet down. I made the right decision to keep the kids away from Leo. He might’ve changed now, but he was a different person six years ago.
