Chapter 28 – His Replica Mate

“What is it? What did you see?” Emmett asks me again.

“Put on the monitors,” I tell him, and he immediately does. I display both samples on the screen.

“The first sample is Brie’s, and the second is the one you just brought. Tell me, what do you see?” I ask him.

He stares at the screen, and a few moments later, I see the confusion on his face. “No, that’s not possible,” he says.

“But it is. You can see it for yourself. There’s nothing there, the blood is clean,” I tell him.

“If their blood is clean, then what the hell is making them sick and killing them?” he asks, voicing the same question that’s going through my mind.

Lena’s POV-

“What are we going to do now?” he asks me.

I stay silent for a few moments, and then it comes to me. “We need fresh samples. Maybe this disease doesn’t survive out of the bloodstream for a long period. So we need to get fresh blood samples. There are monitors in the clinic already, so I need you to grab the microscope and everything else we’ll need. We need to get to the clinic now,” I tell him. As he runs around gathering everything we need, my mind is racing.

What kind of disease is this? It’s like I feared-it’s smart, really smart. If it doesn’t show up outside of the body, then we’re going to have a huge problem finding a cure.

“I have everything,” Emmett says as he walks toward me with a box in his hand.

“Okay, let’s go.” We take off our gowns, masks, and surgical gloves, dispose of them in the trash, and walk through the decontamination bay before leaving the lab.

“What kind of disease doesn’t show up in the blood?” Emmett asks me as we get into the car.

“It happens, but it’s extremely rare-like a fucking eclipse, even rarer than that. And a disease like this has never been found in the States before. So I think the question we should be asking is, how did it get here? And if this could be bigger than just this pack,” I tell him.

“That’s crazy,” he says, and I can see his mind is in overdrive, just like mine. I get to the clinic as fast as possible, and thankfully, it’s not too far from the lab. I stop the car, and we both get out, walking quickly into the clinic. Katy is at her table and sees us.

“Doctor Everhart, what brings you by so early?” she asks me.

“I’m sorry to stop in like this, but something came up, and I need to get a fresh blood sample from Brie. I also need your help,” I tell her. She must hear the urgency in my voice because she immediately stands up.

“Of course, what can I help you with?” she asks.

“I need a space close to Brie’s room where my assistant can set up, and I need at least three monitors. Can you do that for me?” I ask her.

“Yes, of course, follow me,” she says, and we follow her up the stairs to the ICU.

“I’m going to go draw the blood; just help him set up, please,” I tell Katy, then leave them and walk to Brie’s room. But I’m shocked to see who’s there.

“Leo?”

He looks up at me from where he’s sitting. “Lena, what are you doing here?” he asks.

“I could ask you the same thing,” I tell him, and he gets a smirk on his face.

“Since we found out that her parents were dead, I just like to come in here and sit with her and talk. She’s a really good listener,” he tells me, and I can’t help the smile that spreads across my face.

“Yeah, I bet she is,” I tell him.

“What about you?” he asks.

“Huh?” I say, and he smiles, and I can’t help but get lost in it.

“What are you doing here?” he asks me again, and I shake my head to snap myself out of the trance I was in.

“Oh, I need to get a blood sample from Brie,” I tell him.

“Okay, but didn’t your assistant do that yesterday?” he asks.

That’s the thing with Leo-always so observant. I was hoping to hide this from him until I knew what we were actually dealing with, but he’ll just keep asking questions until he gets the answers he’s looking for.

“Yes, he did. I just need a fresh sample,” I tell him, hoping he doesn’t ask more questions.

“Okay… Why though?” he asks.

“I’m testing a hypothesis, but I’m not sure yet,” I tell him.

“You found something?” he asks, and I can hear the hope in his voice.

“Leo, I don’t want to get your hopes up. Just let me get the blood, and when I’m done, I’ll come and update you, okay?” I tell him.

“Yeah, sure,” he says.

I get everything I need to draw her blood, and just as I’m about to start, Leo takes her other hand and holds on to it. Seriously, the man is giving me whiplash-this…

His behavior-could he be pretending because I’m here? But it can’t be. He was here before I came into the clinic, and he had no idea whether I would be coming in today. So maybe this isn’t all an act. Maybe he has changed.

I shake my head and focus on drawing the blood. Once the vial is filled, I close it up and wipe down the spot.

“I’ll be right back,” I tell Leo, then leave the room and head to where Emmett and Katy are setting up.

“Is everything ready?” I ask them.

“Yes, everything is set up,” Emmett tells me. I quickly gown up, put on my gloves and mask.

I prepare the blood and slide it under the microscope. I take a deep breath, then begin to examine it.
