“I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I’ll stop now,” I said, taking a few deep breaths to stop laughing.
“I like her. She’s strong. She’s been through a lot, but she came out on the other side. It’s not easy to do that,” I added. My mind drifted to getting rejected and having the kids. At least I had Zoey with me. Freya had been through so much more, but she hadn’t had anyone until Leo.
I looked at Leo, and I saw that familiar expression on his face-the one he always has when he wants to bring up the past. “So, can you show me to my room?” I asked him.
“Yes, of course,” he says. He takes my bags, and I follow him down the hall until we reach a room at the end. He opens the door, and we both step inside.
The room is spacious and decorated in neutral tones. There’s a queen-sized bed. Leo drops my bags at the foot of the bed.
“Thank you,” I tell him.
“You’re welcome. That door over there leads to the bathroom, and the second one leads to the closet,” he explains. I glance around the room and notice a third door on the other side.
“What does that door lead to?” I ask him.
“That door leads to my room,” he replies. For some reason, my heart skips a beat at the thought of him being so close. I hope he didn’t hear it, but when I look at him, the smirk on his face tells me he did.
“So, if you get scared at night and don’t want to be alone, you can just come over,” he adds.
“Yeah, you wish. Thank you for showing me to my room, Leo. You can leave now,” I tell him.
“Fine, I’ll go. But you can’t blame a guy for trying,” he says, then turns around and leaves the room, closing the door behind him.
I sit down on the bed and let out a huge sigh. This day has been a lot-Freya, Leo, and Leo, who has been flirting with me and making no effort to hide it. What exactly is his aim here? Is he doing this for fun, or does he seriously think it’ll work and I’ll fall into bed with him?
No, it must be for fun. I’m so tired. A nap on the plane didn’t help with my jet lag at all. I grab my phone and dial Zoey. She picks up on the first ring.
“There you are! Where have you been? A flight from New York to New Orleans doesn’t take this long, Lena,” she says, and I can hear the worry in her voice.
“I’m so sorry, Zoey. I’m fine, I’m not hurt. It’s just that I haven’t had the chance to call. Today’s been a lot,” I explain.
“Okay, did you guys meet the witch Freya?” she asks.
“Yes, we did. She’s amazing, Zoey. Not what I expected at all. I think you two will get along,” I tell her.
“That’s good. So, she’s agreed to help you guys?” she asks.
“Yes, she did, but first, she threw Leo around the house like he didn’t weigh anything,” I tell her.
“You’re kidding,” she says, disbelief in her voice.
“I’m serious. I was watching it, and I couldn’t believe it was happening,” I reply.
“Wow, how I wish I was a fly on that wall,” she says.
“Yeah, I know. So, how are the kids?” I ask her.
“They’re good. We had their classes, they had breakfast, then watched some TV, and now they’re napping. Do you want me to wake them up?” she asks.
“No, no, don’t. They’ll just be cranky, and you’ll have to deal with it. I’ll talk to them later. How are things going with Zeo?” I ask.
“Well, I haven’t killed him yet, so I’m going to say good,” she says, and I laugh. “So, since the witch has agreed to help, you guys will be here tomorrow, right?” she asks.
“Not exactly,” I reply.
“What do you mean, not exactly?” she asks.
“Something else came up.”
Alpha Leo’s POV
I smile as I close the door behind me. I can’t help it; it just makes me happy that, after all these years, I still make her flustered. I still have an effect on her, which is a good thing. If none of it affected her, then that’s when we’d have a problem.
I drop my bags in the room and then walk back to the living room to find Freya, but she’s not there. I hear sounds coming from the kitchen, so I head there next.
“Hey, you. What are you up to?” I ask her.
“Trying to figure out what to make for lunch,” she replies.
“Okay, what are the options?” I ask.
“Pasta or beef stew with rice and a side salad,” she tells me.
“How about beef stew? We had pasta last night,” I suggest, and she turns around and smiles.
“We? You know, I didn’t want to say anything in front of her. Are the two of you together?” she asks me.
“No, we’re not. We are the farthest thing from each other,” I tell her.
“Oh, then what was dinner together?” she asks.
“Well, dinner together was Lena’s way of formally introducing me and my beta, Zeo, to her kids. Zeo is going to stay with her best friend, Zoey, and the kids while we’re gone,” I explain.
“Why do I get the sense that you’re hiding something from me?” she asks.
I look around the room, then back at her.
“Don’t worry, your shifter hearing doesn’t work in here,” she tells me.
