“So where can we find him?” I ask.
“Well, according to Dylan’s memories, Tommy is going to be at the club tonight. They reserved a VIP lounge for him,” Freya says.
I check my watch-it’s already ten at night.
“I think we might be too late. It’s already ten,” I tell her. She just smiles and walks up to me.
“My dear brother, when was the last time you went out? And in case you’re forgetting, this is New Orleans. The real partying doesn’t start until midnight, so we have time,” she tells me.
“Vincent, thank you so much for your help and cooperation, but we’ll take it from here while you decide what to do with Dylan,” Freya says.
“Of course, I’m happy to help,” Vincent tells her. The way he’s looking at her… I wish Lena were here to see it too, so I’ll know whether I’m the one reading too much into it.
“But you know that I can’t leave those grimoires with you,” he says.
“Freya…”
“I don’t want to argue with you, Vincent. So here’s what we’ll do: I’ll take the two grimoires and leave yours with you. If at any time you need knowledge from any of them, I’m more than happy to lend it to you. That’s fair, isn’t it? I can’t risk something like this happening again, and you can’t promise me that it won’t because you have no way of knowing,” Freya explains.
“I want to argue with you right now, but I also know you’re right. I’ll get the two for you,” he says, and then he opens his safe, takes out the grimoires, and hands them to Freya.
“So, what’s your next move?” he asks.
“We find Tommy and make him tell us who he sold the pages to. I might be gone for a while. I’ll be leaving with Leo and Lena,” Freya says, and he doesn’t look happy.
“I could come with you, offer the extra help,” he says.
She laughs. “You and I know that you can’t do that. The witches wouldn’t survive without you. Don’t worry, I’ll be back,” she says, then gives him a hug and leaves.
“You’ll look after her?” he asks me.
“Always,” I tell him, and then I leave the room.
Vincent is in love with my sister, and she has no idea.
Lena’s POV
I’ve had to hold Anna’s hand through everything. I don’t know which was worse-the screaming or the silence-but I was with her through it all. Even though he betrayed her, he was still her brother, so of course she was affected by what was happening in that room.
I don’t know how much time passes before Leo and Freya come out of the office, and Anna immediately gets up.
“What happened in there? Is he alright?” Anna asks them.
“He’s fine. He’s just going to take a long nap. When he wakes up, he might have a bad headache, but apart from that, he should be just fine,” Freya tells her.
“You went into his mind, didn’t you?” Anna asks her.
“Yes, I did. It was the least painful and bloody solution. But we got what we needed. I’m sorry you had to go through this today, Anna. I really am. Vincent is waiting for you in his office,” Freya tells her. Anna wipes the tears from her face and then leaves.
I get up from my chair. “Did you really find the person behind this?” I ask them.
“Not necessarily. We found the person Dylan sold the pages to. His name is Tommy Merlyn. He’s kind of an intermediary-he gets things that are hard to get for buyers who are willing to pay, if you get what I mean. I also found out that he will be at the club tonight, so we need to get home and change fast,” Freya explains.
“Of course, you took the grimoires from Vincent?” I ask her.
“I had to, but I left his with him,” she says as we begin walking out of the chapel.
“Is there a store we can stop at? I didn’t exactly pack for the club,” I tell Freya.
“Not an issue. You and I are almost the same size, plus I think I have something that will fit you just perfectly,” she replies.
“Great, thank you,” I tell her.
We get to the car, and Leo gets into the driver’s seat while Freya and I stay in the back.
“So, what’s the plan exactly? For the guy, Tommy Merlyn-how are we going to approach him?” I ask as Leo drives us away from the chapel and back to the apartment.
“I have a plan, but let’s just get home first,” Freya says, and that strikes me as odd. Why does she want us to go home before telling us the plan?
She hasn’t led us wrong since we got here, so I’m trusting her.
“How are the kids?” she asks me, jolting me out of my reverie.
“They’re good. I caught them just before bedtime. The three of them are sleeping in my bedroom because they miss me so much-those were their words. Liam said that Zeo and Zoey remind him of that cartoon Tom and Jerry,” I say, laughing so hard when I recall it.
“But they’re all good. Liam said to tell you that he misses you, Leo. Well, he said ‘boss man,’ but you know what I mean,” I tell him.
He smiles. “I miss him too. I miss all three of them, but I’m happy that Zeo and Zoey are giving them plenty of entertainment.” He says, but even with the smile on his face, the longing in his eyes is clear.
We get to the apartment, and Leo goes to his room while I follow Freya to her room to get the dress she’s lending me.
“Just give me a minute, let me put these away,” she says, carrying the two grimoires and walking to the other side of the room.
She waves her hand across the wall, and it opens. She keeps the grimoires there, then waves her hand again, and it closes.
“What did I just see?” I ask her.
“It’s hard to explain, but it’s basically an illusion spell,” she tells me.
