“Okay, now we’re getting somewhere. What was the name of the company?” I ask him.
“A company called Knight Corp,” he says. I hear a loud ringing in my ears. That’s not possible. My own company?
I smash his second foot, and he screams loudly again. “That’s the truth, I swear to you,” he says, and I can tell he’s telling the truth, but I can’t believe it.
“Are you sure the courier delivered those pages to Knight Corp in New York?” I ask again.
“Yes, man, I swear to you I’m not lying,” he replies.
“I’m going to need the name of that courier service,” I tell him.
“Of course,” he says, then I get up and start pacing while Freya heals his legs for him. He’s human. I wasn’t going to paralyze him for months, plus he was just doing his job.
“I’m done,” Freya says.
I go back to my seat and face Merlin. “Now, as a gesture of goodwill, she healed you. So here’s what’s going to happen now. Do you have the name of the courier company on your phone?” I ask him.
“Yes, it’s in my email,” he tells me.
“Okay, so here’s what’s going to happen: you’ll give me the name of the courier company. Then all three of us are going to leave, and you’ll get locked in this room. I’m sure your guards will notice you’ve been gone for too long and come looking for you. But the thing is, you won’t remember anything that happened in here, but you will remember the fear. Now, can I have that name?” I tell him.
With shaky hands, he pulls out his phone and brings up the email. “Here, that’s it,” he says, handing me the phone. It reads SMITH COURIERS.
“Thank you very much for your help, Mr. Merlin,” I say, then hand him back his phone.
Freya steps up behind him to wipe his memory. “This is going to hurt,” is the only warning she gives him before she places both hands on his head and begins chanting. He screams so loud-louder than when I smashed his foot-but a few minutes later, she’s done, and he passes out.
“Are you okay?” Lena asks me.
“Not now,” I tell her, my emotions are all over the place at the moment. Letting her go off to lure him here and finding out that the person behind this disease could possibly be one of my own people isn’t helping, and it doesn’t help that I can smell him on her.
“I’m done, we should get out of here,” Freya tells us.
“Okay, let’s go,” I say, and we all leave the room, making sure to lock the door behind us.
We take the back exit out of the club; we don’t want to risk Merlin’s security guards seeing Lena and wondering where their boss went. Thankfully, there’s no security at the back exit, so we slip out easily.
We walk back to the car and get in. I drive us out of there.
“Okay, I don’t know why the both of you are silent, but I’m guessing it has something to do with what Merlin said in there. Am I right?” Freya asks.
“Yes, you’re right,” I tell her.
“Okay, so what exactly did he say that has you looking like someone stole your puppy?” she asks me.
“This isn’t funny, Freya. The company he delivered those pages to-Knight Corp.”
“Yes, what about it?” she asks.
“That’s my company.”
Alpha Leo’s POV
“So, does that mean what I think it means?” she asks me.
“If what you’re thinking is that whoever is behind this has to be one of my people, then yes, you’re right,” I tell her.
“Fuck, that’s so messed up, and it also makes it even harder to track down the culprit,” Freya says.
“Not exactly. We just need to get to the courier company. They have a record of all their deliveries, and if they don’t, our office should. Every package has to be signed for,” I explain.
“Okay, then that’s what we’ll do. When are we leaving?” she asks. I’m so glad I have her back in my life.
“I already texted the pilot. We need to be at the airstrip in the next two hours. Is that good with both of you?” I ask them.
“Yeah, I can pack a bag by then,” Freya says, and Lena just nods her head.
I wonder what’s going through her mind. Is she thinking the same thing I am? What happened on the dance floor-the connection between the two of us-it was electric. I was so close to kissing her before Freya interrupted us.
The rest of the drive is in silence until we arrive at the apartment. I park the car, and we all get out.
“I’m going to go pack my bags,” Freya tells us as we enter the apartment and disappears into her room.
“I’m going to go take a long shower,” Lena tells me, and she’s about to leave, but I hold her hand.
She looks at me with a puzzled expression. “What is it?” she asks.
I let go of her hand first. “About what happened back at the club, on the dance floor,” I say.
“Oh, that was fast thinking on your part. It really got Merlin’s attention,” she tells me.
“You and I both know that wasn’t to get Merlin’s attention,” I reply.
“I can’t talk about this with you, Leo,” she tells me, about to turn around, but I’m faster and block her path.
“Why not? Don’t lie to me and tell me that you didn’t feel the connection between us,” I say.
“Are you serious right now, Leo? Of course, I felt it, but what difference does it make? That moment between us never should’ve happened. That’s why I always try to keep my distance, because moments like that just make me hurt even more. When it ends, all it does is remind me of the past, of the fact that we could’ve had thousands of those moments by now. And now, having them with you, I’m not different from Scarlett. Because even though she’s not my favorite person in the world, she’s still your wife, your mate, your Luna. And I will never do to her what was done to me. So please, Leo, let’s just forget it happened, chalk it up to a drunken mistake, and go back to the main reason both of us are here, which is to find a cure,” she tells me. I can hear the sadness and heartbreak in her voice, and she doesn’t even try to hide it.
