Chapter 24 – His Plump Mate (Rebel & Austin) Novel

While we hold each other, I remember a question I wanted to ask Rebel. Since we are alone, I want to talk to her about it and no one will hear it and try to use it against her.

“Rebel, darling, I wanted to ask you about something you’ve mentioned a couple of times,” I begin, “You said the night I met you and after fighting the rogues that Roxie runs through her energy faster than other wolves. Now I’ve seen you fight and run. You both are in excellent shape and have a lot of stamina and it doesn’t make sense that you both are so tired afterwards. Do you know what causes this fatigue in you both?”

Rebel looks at me and I can see she is thinking how to answer me. Clearly, she doesn’t know why, but she’s never really talked about it either. “Rebel baby, whatever it is, we can work on fixing it. You have to tell me though.” I encourage. Any weakness she has, I’m sure we can work on it, but I can’t fix problems I don’t know about.

I see her eyes changing and I can tell her and Roxie are trying to figure out how to explain this to me. Even though my mate loves me and has let herself be happy with me, she is still struggling with some trust issues. It saddens me to know that this is a lifetime of hurt caused by people who were supposed to protect and failed her.

I wait patiently, sending love, encouragement and calm through our bond.

She sighs and looks at me, “I honestly don’t know what causes it Austin. It’s not like my father had the pack doctors looking me over. I never told them when I was hungry because they didn’t care whether or not late. Remember, I had to feed myself. I will say, over the last few days that I’ve been here, I haven’t felt it as much.”

“How about I take you to see Dr. Hadley? She’s one of our pack doctors. Let’s have her give you a physical, blood work, whatever else she thinks is necessary to make sure you are healthy. If there is something going on, let’s face it together, okay?” As I finish speaking, I see the look of nervousness in her eyes. “Baby, I know first times for you make you uncomfortable. But I promise there is nothing to fear, and you won’t look weak going to the pack hospital.”

I take her hand, “You know what? Let’s go now. The sooner we find out, the sooner we fix the issue, and you can be healthy.” With that I lead my beautiful mate out of my office.

Rebel POV

Austin takes my hand and leads me out of his office. Roxie and I are both nervous. What if there is something wrong with us and my mate doesn’t want us anymore? What if he breaks the bond? If there is something wrong, what if it can’t be treated? My head is spinning as we walk towards the pack hospital Austin stops and looks at me.

“Darling, I hear your mind working overtime. Calm down. First and foremost, you’re mine and always will be. I am not going anywhere, and neither are you. My mark is on that pretty neck, and I am not breaking our bond. Second, if there is something wrong and it can’t be treated or cured, I’m still going to be by your side. I don’t think you understand how much I love you and how unconditional my love for you is truly. I know we haven’t been together long, but I am YOURS Rebel. Please, stop worrying about what this means for us. I promise you, I’m here and I’m not going anywhere.” He says as he wraps his arms around me and brings me in for a heated kiss. I feel him pouring his love into our bond and it calms me. I can feel he is telling me the truth, and I relax in his arms. We stay like this for a long time and then when he finally pulls back, he smirks at me. “Besides, my little mate, I’m looking forward to tonight and many more just like it.”

I laugh and blush. “And you say I’m using you for your body. Back at you Alpha.”

“Oh, but it’s such a sexy body,” he growls softly at me and slaps my butt. “Come on, let’s get this done and then we will get some dinner before we go back to our room for some other extracurricular activities.” He says, nipping my earlobe, making me shiver. Roxie is practically drooling.

‘He is so sexy and all ours Rebs. He said he isn’t going anywhere, and he was telling the truth.’ Roxie chimes in.

‘I’m glad, because I don’t think I could be without him now. I’ve fallen in love with him, and I am way too far gone now to go back.’ I say to my wolf.

‘Me too. Cronos and I are always craving each other too. I want our mates. I’m not giving them up.’ She says seriously.

‘It doesn’t look like we have to worry about that anyway.’ I tell her.

We reach the pack hospital and Austin asks for Dr. Hadley. When she appears, she looks like a doctor type. She looks like she is in her early 40’s and has dirty blonde hair that is in a neat bun. She has frameless glasses that complements her thin face. She is a little shorter than me, but then most she-wolves are, and she has kind blue eyes.

“Alpha Austin! You finally bring our Luna to see the pack hospital I see!” says Dr. Hadley. She has a vibrant wide smile and I am instantly at ease with her. “Luna Rebel, it’s an honor and pleasure to meet you and have you here in our hospital. Were you here for a tour?” She asks.

Austin interrupts, “A tour would be great Dr. Hadley, but first we came here to speak with you about a private matter.”

Dr. Hadley’s demeanor changed from warm and inviting to professional and serious in an instant. “Certainly. Alpha, Luna, right this way.” She leads us to her office. It’s professional and sleek, but warm and inviting, just like her personality.

As we take a seat, Dr. Hadley sits behind her desk and grabs a notepad and pen from her desk. “So, what did you want to discuss Alpha Austin?” She looks pointedly at both of us waiting for him to speak

“Dr. Hadley,” he begins, “Rebel is a very strong fighter and her wolf is also very fast. But whenever they exert themselves, they expend their energy very fast. Faster than normal wolves. She has told me on a couple of occasions that she needs to eat to regain her energy after going through any physical exertion. Typically, I wouldn’t think twice about it, but I don’t think it’s normal. I’ve seen Rebel fight and her wolf Roxie run. They are tired afterwards but their stamina is certainly up to the expectations of even the warriors of this pack. However, Rebel is hungrier than all of the warriors afterwards.”

“I see.” Dr. Hadley now turns her attention to me, “Did you ever talk to the pack doctors from your old pack about this Luna?”

I look down and sigh. I can tell I’m going to need to explain my life at Ironclaw again. “This is my first time seeing a pack doctor.” I say quietly.

Her eyes widen and shock registers, “This is your first time ever seeing a doctor in your life Luna?” I nod shyly.

“What did your family do when you were in need of medical attention?” she asked me.

“Um, I had to cure myself doctor.” I said, tears stinging my eyes. “I didn’t exactly have a loving home growing up.” I added.

“I see.” I look up to her watching me. Her eyes have softened and I see something kind flickering in her eyes. Well, Luna, I am always available if you ever need medical attention moving forward. Do not ever hesitate to come see me if you are injured or unwell. I promise you will receive the best care, and not just because you are the Luna.” She says with a smile.

“Now, let’s start with an exam. I want to also get some blood work and X-rays done. I intend to be very thorough Luna. Since you have never been to a doctor, I am starting with zero information. Also, I am going to ask you quite a few questions. Do you know your family’s medical history at all?” She asks. Her demeanor has gone right back to professional and serious, but I catch the sincerity of all of her words and it puts me at ease.

“I don’t know any of my family history. Only that my mother died giving birth to me. Otherwise, I have no knowledge of anything.” I say to her, this time trying to match her level of professionalism.

“Okay, let’s start with the primary reason you are here. How long have you been experiencing the hunger issues? “She starts as we talk for over an hour. I answer her questions as best as I can, but I don’t know much about any of these things she’s asking about.

After a couple of hours of questions, X-Rays, drawing blood, getting my height, weight, checking my eyes, ears, nose and throat, the doctor steps out to retrieve the results of all the tests. While she is gone, Austin, who has stayed quiet and seated the entire time comes to stand in front of me.

He

“See darling? Nothing to be afraid of coming here. I feel like I learned so much more about you today though.”

says as he leans down to kiss me. I wrap my arms around him and deepen our kiss. He growls approvingly as he tightens his grip. Before we could go any further, Dr. Hadley knocks and enters the room. We pull away from each other and Dr. Hadley smiles knowingly at us.

“Okay Luna, I wanted to rule out some conditions first before moving on to what I suspect is the issue. First, you are not diabetic or have thyroid issues. It is very rare for any wolf to have these conditions but not impossible. You are, however, malnourished, and I suspect this is the biggest underlining issue. Based on our conversation earlier, you’ve never had a good diet and that will need to change if we want to get your healthy and stop having these hunger issues.” She advises.

“My diet?” I question. “I’m already plump Dr. Hadley.” I hope she doesn’t tell me I need to gain weight. I am already self-conscious at it is around everyone, except Austin.

“Luna, just because you are above weight, doesn’t mean your diet is healthy. Based on what you explained, no one ever cared about your nutrition. You were forced to figure out how to eat on your own from a very young age. You developed a condition called ‘polyphagia.”” She says. “You eat a lot of foods that don’t help your body maintain energy. You fill up quickly with what you do eat, but it’s empty of nutritional value. That coupled with the stress and anxiety you have lived with until recently, has caused this condition to show itself.”
