I blinked, genuinely confused for a second. “I haven’t spoken to Seth in over a month. I told you that on Saturday.”
“Well, he’s acting weird!” Jessie hissed, leaning in close. “He ignored me all weekend, and when I finally saw him this morning, he asked me where you were! Why is my boyfriend asking about you?”
“Probably because he realizes he downgraded,” I muttered under my breath.
“Excuse me?!”
“I said,” I raised my voice slightly, closing my locker. “I have no idea, Jessie. Maybe you should ask him instead of harassing me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have class.”
I pushed past them, ignoring the string of curses Jessie threw at my back. I just wanted to get through the day, do my homework, and disappear into the background.
Unfortunately, the universe had other plans. At lunchtime, as I was making my way to the cafeteria to meet Mackie, a large body stepped in front of me, blocking my path.
“Keska. We need to talk.”
I looked up into Seth Harpper’s face. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and classically handsome in that dumb-jock kind of way. Once upon a time, we had been close friends. But that was before I caught him balls deep in my sister while he was supposed to be driving Mackie and me to our belt testing.
“Move, Seth,” I said coldly, trying to step around him.
He blocked me again, looking frustrated. “Come on, Kes. Why are you freezing me out? You didn’t answer my texts on Saturday, you won’t look at me in the halls. What did I do?”
I let out a harsh laugh. “Are you serious? You really want to do this right now? In the middle of the hallway?”
“Yes!” he insisted. “I thought we were friends!”
“Friends don’t ditch their friends in the snow to go screw their sister,” I snapped, keeping my voice low but venomous.
Seth’s face went completely white. “I… you… how did you…”
“I saw you, Seth. A month ago. When I went looking for you at the house.” I shoved hard against his chest, pushing him out of my way. “So do us both a favor and stay away from me.
You and Jessie deserve each other.”
I walked away, leaving him standing there looking like he’d been slapped.
By the time the final bell rang, I was emotionally drained. I met Mackie at the front doors, and we started walking toward the bike racks.
“Hold it right there, bitch!”
I groaned internally. Jessie was storming across the lawn toward us, Seth trailing behind her looking incredibly guilty. Jessie looked furious. Clearly, Seth had confessed something, or Jessie had twisted it in her head.
“You told him to break up with me!” Jessie screamed, drawing the attention of several students.
“I didn’t tell him to do anything, Jessie!” I yelled back, finally losing my patience. “I told him to leave me alone!”
Jessie raised her hand, fully intent on slapping me, just like Mimi had on Saturday. I braced myself, ready to block it and drop her, family consequences be damned.
But before her hand could connect, a massive hand clamped around her wrist.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” a deep, stern voice said.
Jessie gasped, whirling around. Pete, still in his full pack warrior uniform, was standing there, his grip on Jessie’s wrist unyielding. He was on border patrol duty near the school, and he looked entirely unamused.
“Let go of me! I’m the Alpha’s daughter!” Jessie shrieked.
“And so is she,” Pete countered calmly, releasing Jessie’s wrist with a slight shove. “Alpha Drake does not tolerate pack members brawling on school grounds. If you have a problem, take it to the training ring. Otherwise, go home, Jessie.”
Jessie looked like she wanted to argue, but crossing a fully trained, adult pack warrior was a stupid move, even for her. She glared at me, then at Pete, and stormed off toward James’s truck, Seth running after her like a lost puppy.
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. “Thank you, Pete.”
He winked at me. “Like I said on Saturday, Kes. We’ve got your back.”
“I owe you for today,” I told him earnestly. “I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”
