After just trying on one outfit, I was already beginning to lose my patience. My fingers started undoing the buttons on the side of the dress. I was eager to get back in my normal
clothes.
“I don’t think so,” I said blatantly. “I’m sure that if this one fits, then the rest of them should as well.”
I could tell that Nina was disappointed in my lack of enthusiasm toward my new clothes. I didn’t want to come off as ungrateful, but my priorities as well as my mind were really placed elsewhere at the moment.
As soon as I changed back into my clothes, I left the living room to head back to my room. On my way back, my mind kept returning to my earlier conversation with Alexander.
I knew I couldn’t leave. With Edward still recovering back home, my place was here with Alexander whether I wanted to be or not. Although, I appreciated the way he spoke to me, regarding the matter. He hadn’t demanded that I leave but instead asked if I wanted to.
Who knows? Maybe I’ve earned some level of trust from him.
Right as I made it to my door, I stopped short. The realization suddenly hit me like a brick
wall that tonight I was technically meant to sleep with Alexander. Good God. After the day we both had, I wasn’t sure if either of us was even up for such an obligation.
But I made a promise to both him and myself that I was going to make this marriage work. Without much thought, I turned toward Alexander’s room, turned the knob and walked right in.
Due to my rising nerves, I accidentally forget to knock. My heart jumped into my throat when I saw Alexander, who had already put on his pajamas, leaning against the bed in a standing position.
He looked as though he was just getting ready to remove his mask from his face but stopped to stare at me questioningly.
“Oh my God…”
[Evelyn’s POV]
He’s standing!
I felt the heavy weight of Alexander glaring at me from across the room, but my eyes were still glued to how his body was positioned.
I casually glanced around the room, hoping to find an explanation for the questions that were piling up in my mind.
How the hell was he able to get himself up into bed without the help of someone else?
Considering the bed was raised up and his wheelchair sat short toward the ground, I couldn’t begin to imagine how any of what was going on was possible.
“Evelyn.” Alexander tried calling out to knock me from my mental train of thought.
“Your legs?”
“Evelyn…”
I gently shook my head, ignoring the buzzing
sound of his voice in the back of my mind.
“H-How is this possible?”
“Evelyn…”
“You’re standing,” I said, sounding utterly marveled.
“Evelyn!”
I tore my eyes from his legs and blinked back the blurriness. I haphazardly cleared my throat and tried to gain my bearings.
“I don’t understand,” I confessed weakly. “H-How are you standing right now?
I couldn’t for the life of me understand what was happening. Alexander looked as shocked and bewildered as I did but likely for a whole other reason. He readjusted the mask over his face and braced his hands on the mattress behind him.
“You could have at least knocked on the door before coming. What are you even doing back so quickly?” he asked.
I parted my lips to speak, but nothing legible
was willing to come out. Scrunching my eyes closed, I fought to collect my thoughts.
“You’re right, I’m sorry. I should have knocked,” I confessed. “Can you…Can you please explain to me what is happening right now?”
Alexander looked as bewildered and at a loss for words as I had been. I watched his eyes dart around, as though he were looking for a viable answer to throw out. Finally, letting out a long breath, he slowly lifted his head up to look at me.
“You…Caught me in the middle of propping myself out of the wheelchair and lifting myself into bed,” he explained carefully. “What you’re seeing is not me, actually, standing. I’m currently leaning against the bedpost.”
My face flooded with heat. Oh God. I must have come off as such a weirdo! The man very likely needed help and there I was just staring and throwing questions at him.
“I’m so sorry,” I muttered under my breath. “Here, let me help you.”
“I’m sure I can handle this myself,” he said.
“I have no doubt that you can. But since I’m here, I’d like to help if that’s alright with you.”
Alexander said nothing. He merely shrugged and began moving his arms back to get a good stance on the bed. His whole upper body flexed, causing my mouth to go dry.
It hadn’t escaped my notice that Alexander was wearing nothing more than a thin pair of boxer shorts to bed. My cheeks flushed as I tried not to think back to our earlier encounter in the bath.
Goddmanit, Evelyn. Now is not the time for this.
I moved over to him and lowered my hand to his waist. Using purely his upper muscles, Alexander got a good grip on the mattress and was able to haul himself up to the head of the bed. Meanwhile, I did my part and lifted his legs and placed them down as carefully as I could. Wow.
For a moment, my eyes were locked on Alexander’s well-toned legs. It was incredible how someone in his situation was able to keep his legs looking so strong.
I wasn’t going to lie, there was no way in hell that I was able to imagine how he managed to pull himself out of his wheelchair into a solid standing position without help from anyone else.
“Evelyn, grab that blanket there,” he told me.
It seemed like Alexander was determined to pull me from my thoughts; and, in a way, I was thankful for it. No doubt I could have spent the next hour alone simply trying to understand how any of it was possible.
Nevertheless, I snagged the blanket off the far end of the bed and quickly draped it over his lower half.
It was then that I noticed the deep seam that ran down the center of the large mattress. My eyebrows drew together in confusion. When I had first been brought through here to join Alexander in the bath, I noticed that this particular room had two beds.
They were the kind of beds that could be pushed together when necessary for certain intimate acts.
Like how they’re situated right now.
I couldn’t help the light shade of pink that touched my cheeks. Alexander easily caught on to my shift in demeanor.
“There’s no need to feel uncomfortable,” he said. “Even though it is technically our wedding night, Nina believes it would be a ‘bad omen’ if we were to sleep in separate beds. And I wasn’t planning on doing anything with you.”
