But Matron Rose’s face told me this wasn’t a lie.
William had saved my life. Thrown himself into fire for me. If he needed my blood, I wouldn’t hesitate.
“Alright,” I whispered. “Tell me what to do.”
“You don’t need to do anything. Just stay calm.”
To my surprise, I was calm.
The pack doctors entered a moment later, rolling equipment with them.
They placed a needle in William first, then prepared my arm. My burns made it harder for them to find a place that wasn’t too damaged.
“Sorry, Ms. Jessica,” one of them murmured. “We’ll be gentle.”
Their hands were careful. Too careful. I realized this was because of William. Because he had ordered them to treat me like I mattered.
The blood transfusion began.
A warm pull tugged at my arm. I watched the tube that connected us, my blood flowing toward him.
I never looked away from William.
Matron Rose noticed. She touched my shoulder softly. “Your body is still weak. Please rest. This place is safe. No one can enter without our Alpha’s approval. William will be fine. Maybe he’ll even wake up when you do.”
“Alright,” I whispered.
My body felt fragile, scorched by the flames. But something about being here-with Lara, with Matron Rose, and especially with William-made me feel strangely safe.
My breathing slowed.
Sleep tugged at me.
When my eyes finally closed, I heard Matron Rose speak to the doctors.
“Well? Any progress?”
“Ms. Jessica’s blood is working,” one doctor said, voice shaking. “It’s fighting the poison. We’re seeing real improvement.”
I heard Matron Rose exhale like she had been holding her breath for years.
Before sleep took me, I studied William’s face one more time.
His skin had more color now. His breathing sounded steadier. The warmth in his cheeks had returned.
Matron Rose leaned close to me and whispered, “Sweet pup, thank you for your blood.”
My eyes slipped shut.
That And the moment I heard a voice.
It wasn’t speaking to me. It was just talking.
[I’m not surprised her blood saved him. Ten years ago, when the Vale Pack Alpha begged William to help him, it was because my nephew discovered something unique in her blood. But why did he need it back then? All I know is… William always saw her differently. Even ten years ago.]
My forehead tightened.
What was she talking about?
But the darkness finally pulled me under before I could figure it out.
Johan’s POV
“Jessica, why haven’t you turned on the lights?”
The words slipped out of my mouth out of habit.
The villa was pitch black. No lamps. No candles. Not even the faint glow of a hallway light.
I reached for the switch near the sofa, but a sharp pain stabbed through my ribs and forced me down onto the cushions. I groaned, gripping the fabric.
Night. It was already night.
And I was awake.
For a second, I expected her sweet and soft voice to answer me.
But the silence hit me harder than the pain.
“Jessica?” I whispered.
Only emptiness replied.
I pushed myself upright, breathing hard. Every trace of her had been erased from this place. Her scent. Her clothes. Her tiny habits. Gone. Like she had never lived here at all.
It shouldn’t have been like this.
My chest clenched painfully. I staggered to my feet and forced myself toward the door.
I had to go to her grave again.
I had to get her forgiveness.
My wolf paced beneath my skin, restless, furious, grieving. He wanted her back just as badly.
I slid into my car. My hands trembled against the wheel, and the engine roared to life like it felt my desperation.
When the warriors opened the pack gates, I spotted Suzette immediately. She was yelling at the guards like a madwoman.
I frowned and checked my phone.
Fifty missed calls.
Fifty messages.
All from her.
[Johan, did you block our link? Why can’t I reach you? Johan, I’m at your villa gate. It needs your face to open! Why didn’t you add mine? Johan answer me!]
Annoyance churned in my chest.
She was still arguing with the guards, demanding they let her through, but they kept repeating the same thing.
“Proof of residency. You have none. You cannot enter.”
That single villa stood like a wall between us. She couldn’t cross it no matter how much she screamed. Eventually, the guards tried to pull her back as she clawed at the bars.
I exhaled sharply and mindlinked the warrior in charge.
‘Let her through.’
I stepped out of the car.
Suzette caught sight of me and burst into hysterical tears.
“Johan! The security here is awful. They wouldn’t let me in! They even dragged me out. You should fire them. Or punish them for daring to disrespect your Luna!”
She lunged at me.
Instinctively, I stepped aside, and she fell hard onto the ground.
Her eyes flew wide in disbelief. “Johan… what is happening to you?”
But all I could see was Jessica.
The heartbreak in her eyes.
Her voice begging me not to leave.
The moment her hope finally slipped away.
Every shred of pity or affection I once had for Suzette evaporated.
“Don’t touch me,” I snapped. “Jessica hated when you touched me.”
Suzette blinked fast. “What are you talking about? I’m your mate. Jessica’s dead. Does it matter what she liked or didn’t like?”
She yanked down part of her collar, revealing the mate mark.
She shouldn’t have done that.
My wolf surged with rage.
I crouched down and grabbed her by the throat.
My voice dropped low. “Ten days ago, when I agreed to your ceremony, I told you no one could ever know. I only did it because you wanted it so badly. So why did you call me that night? You knew it was my bonding ceremony with Jessica. You knew I was supposed to mark her. Why did you call me then?”
Her breath hitched as my grip tightened, but fury lit her eyes.
“You keep blaming me,” she hissed. “But you’re the one who came running. You’re the one who rushed to me. You’re the one who wanted the night together. So tell me, Johan… how is that my fault?”
Her words punched the air out of my lungs.
She was right.
One message from her… and I threw Jessica away.
