He isn’t a wolf
“Hi, your Rosalyn, right? I met your mom today,” he says. I manage to get myself under control and not embarrass myself. “Please call me Rose
You must be Mr. Forester” I say extending my hand to him
He looks down at my hand like it might burn him. “Sorry, I have my hands full of Lily bear, and please call me Beck.” “It’s very nice to meet you,
Beck.” “Dinner’s ready, let’s go Lily bear. I made your favorite, spaghetti,” Stacey says from the hallway. Lily wiggles out of Beck’s arms and takes off out of the room, leaving us alone
There are a few seconds of awkward silence and I swear he is about to say more before he turns leaving me alone in Lily’s room. “There is something about him, Rose. I feel drawn to him and to Lily. I know you feel it too,” Zora says. “I’m not sure what I feel, Zora.
He is handsome, that’s for sure, but he isn’t our mate.”
“Don’t give me that, Rose. We are one, and I know you feel it.” “He is a human, Zora. Even if he was our mate, which he is not, he doesn’t even know our kind exists.” Someone clearing their throat startles me.
“Are you alright Rose? You seemed really deep in thought,” Stacey says with a weird twinkle in her eye
“Sorry, I was wondering if I should go. I’m not sure if Beck really wants me here, and I don’t want to impose.” “Nonsense, Beck is a grump with everyone. Don’t mind him. Now my spaghetti is the best, according to Lily, who is waiting patiently for her new friend to join us.”
“Alright, I don’t want to disappoint my new friend,” I say with a smile and follow her out of the room
She leads me to a beautiful dining room. “Rose, come sit next to me and daddy” she says. I swear that Beck looks irritated at the thought of me sitting next to him, but I ignore it. I take my seat between Lily and Beck
The smell of the sauce and what looks like fresh baked bread makes my mouth water
Stacey plates our food and Lily starts to tell Beck about the “amazing unicorn cupcake” I made. I smile as I grab the salt at the same time as Beck. When my fingers brush against his hand, a light tingle dances on my fingertips. Zora growls and says a word I never thought I would hear again, “Mate.”
I look at him and panic flashes in his eyes before it turns to anger. I feel like my heart is shattering all over again. “I have to go,” Beck says as he stalks toward the front door. I look at Stacey and she looks hurt. Maybe Charlies is right, they are together.
Does she know what just happened? How could she, their humans? I have to leave. “I’m sorry I need to get home.”
I rush outside, and I don’t stop when I hear Stacey calling my name. I slide into my driver’s seat and throw the car in gear. Zora’s whimpers break my heart. This can’t be happening. My bond isn’t even broken with Reese
He didn’t accept my rejection. “Zora, he can’t be our mate.”
“I don’t understand it, but our side of the bond is broken even without Reese’s acceptance. Beck is our mate even though he acted like a jacka**.” Her words make my chest ache and I let the tears fall. Our fated mate preferred our brother and our second chance mate doesn’t want us at all
As soon as we reach the apartment, I make my way to my room and lock the door. I throw myself down on my bed. Tomorrow, I’ll start to get over the pain, but right now I allow myself to feel the sting of rejection until the darkness takes me under. I fall into a restless sleep plagued by Beck’s piercing blue eyes
Beckham POV
“What the hell is wrong with you” Gideon growls at me as I speed away from the house. “Gideon, I really don’t want to do this right now.” “Well, to f**king bad. You hurt our mate. You need to go back and make things right.”
“I can’t, Gideon. Don’t you think it killed me to see the pain in her eyes, because it did? We can’t have another mate. Have you forgotten everything that happened?”
“I have always been proud to be your wolf, but right now I’m not. You don’t get to be a coward because of some misguided guilt or loyalty to our first mate,” he says. “Losing Deborah almost killed us, and we have Lily to think about. She is more important than any chance we have at happiness with a new mate. We failed to protect our mate.
Is that what you want for Rosalyn?”
“Bullsh*t” he growls, and I bristle at his gruffness. “I loved Deborah and Aurora as much as you did. They will always hold a place in our hearts, but Rosalyn is our mate now. You need to make peace with the fact that you can’t change the past,” he says. I pull onto a dirt road that leads to a large lake.
I park and make my way over to a large rock that overlooks the water. Gideon is silent, but I know he is far from done. My mind wanders back to the day I lost Deborah
