He leaned forward like a zealot.
“She had a third eye on her forehead. A glowing one. She’s not one of us. She’s an abomination, Your Majesty. She’ll curse the entire kingdom, she has to be eliminated before it’s too late!”
I stared blankly at him.
A third eye.
But what chilled me wasn’t the absurdity, it was the unshakable belief in his tone.
“Let’s say I believe you,” I muttered, walking over to Joe. “Even if something as fantastical as this happened, why didn’t you report it to me?”
“You weren’t in the kingdom then,” he answered weakly. “You’d embarked on one of your travels. So I took matters into my own hands…”
I watched him as his chest rose and fell with labored breath.
“Keep them alive,” I told Lupercus coldly. “I’ll be back.”
But just as I reached the door, I paused.
“Whether you touched her or not… whether you were just a participant or a bystander, you are just as guilty. You stood there and let her suffer. And you’ll be punished with the same severity as your spineless Alpha.”
I turned, letting the fury bleed from my voice.
“And if I ever find out you held something back, anything at all, then death will be the kindest thing I offer.”
They flinched like a whipped dog.
“I have something to say.”
One of them was shaking violently, as blood leaked from a wound at his side.
“Please,” he whispered. “If I tell you, I want your word that I won’t be punished.”
I smiled devilishly.
“Bold of you to think you have any right to bargain with me, don’t you think?” I hissed.
I moved toward him and unsheathed my black claws.
I pressed one gently to his throat. Just enough to nick the skin and taste blood.
“Speak. And my reaction and decision will depend on the mood your answer leaves me in.”
He swallowed hard.
“Alpha Joe…” He looked at him almost apologetically and turned away instantly.
“I’m listening,” I pressed.
He hung his head low and shook, “he… he had his way with her. Many times.” he whispered.
Everything in me…froze.
“…What did you just say?”
My voice didn’t sound like mine. It was stripped of all humanity.
He didn’t reply.
He didn’t need to.
Because I saw it, the truth etched in the horror on Joe’s face, and in the stench of guilt that clung to his skin like rot.
JOE.
A scream, no, a roar tore from my throat as I turned on my heel.
I crossed the room in seconds. Joe had barely opened his mouth before my hand was around his throat, lifting him clean off the ground with the chair he was strapped to, and slammed him against the wall so hard the stone cracked behind him.
“You forced yourself on her?”
I didn’t wait for him to answer.
I slammed him again.
“You put your hands on her?”
Again.
“You dared defile what’s MINE?”
His face turned purple. He clawed at my wrist, but I couldn’t feel it. I couldn’t feel anything but the rage flooding my veins like molten lava.
I threw him across the room. He crashed into the interrogation table, splintering the chair in two.
Lupercus didn’t move.
He just stepped aside.
I stalked toward Joe, who was wheezing, dragging himself backward like a worm.
“No. No, please…”
I grabbed him by the ankle and dragged him back to the center of the room.
Joe opened his mouth and I shattered his jaw with one punch.
He went limp, but I didn’t stop. My fists came down again. And again. And again. Until his Flesh split. And his Bone cracked.
His Teeth scattered around me like broken pearls across the floor. He tried to turn away.
I grabbed his arm and ripped it, his shoulder dislocated with a wet crunch.
Still, I didn’t stop.
I wanted him to feel it. I wanted every nerve in his goddamn body to remember.
I reached for the Thornsteel coil, wrapping it around his remaining arm, yanking until the metal fused into the bone, forcing every nerve to light up in searing agony.
He howled, but it wasn’t enough.
It would never be enough.
