“Doesn’t matter,” he muttered, not meeting my eyes.
I reached for his hand, stopping the spoon halfway. “Killian…”
Still, he wouldn’t look at me.
“Killian… please. Look at me.”
And then it happened.
A tear. One. It slipped down his cheek before he quickly wiped it away like it betrayed him, like it had no right being there. He blinked fast, masking it with a blank expression, but I saw it. I saw all of it. And my heart shattered again.
I hugged him. Tight. Pressed my body to his and wrapped my arms around his waist, hoping maybe he’d hug me back. But he didn’t. He just stood there, still as stone.
“Baby,” I whispered again, voice trembling.
He slowly pulled away. Placed the tray on the bed and stood up. “I have a lot to do today. I might return late,” he said, already walking toward the door.My chest clenched.
I jumped out of bed, not caring that I was still half-naked, and ran to him, wrapping my arms around his body from behind. “Don’t walk away from me. Please.”
He paused.
I rested my cheek on his back and said the one thing I needed him to hear, over and over again. “I love you. Please don’t be too hard on yourself. I love you just the way you are.”
His body stiffened, and then slowly, so slowly, he turned around and pulled me into his arms, his grip almost bruising, as if he was afraid I’d disappear if he let go.
“I was scared,” he said into my hair.
“Why?”
“Because you wouldn’t talk to me. You were quiet. You didn’t even look at me. I thought… maybe you hated me because I-“
“What? No!” I pulled back to look him in the face. “Killian, no! I wasn’t angry because of that. I was never angry about that. I was just… hurt. Because you didn’t tell me sooner. I felt like maybe you didn’t trust me enough. Like you were hiding something from me when all I ever wanted was for us to be honest with each other.”
His jaw clenched, and he looked down, ashamed. “It’s my fault. I didn’t tell you because I was shamed. I didn’t know how you’d take it. I didn’t know how you’d see me after. I just… I kept telling myself it wasn’t the right time but there never seemed to be a right time.”
I took his face in my hands and forced him to meet my eyes. “I love you. You’re my mate, Killian. I don’t care if we can’t have another baby. We already have Ryan. He’s everything. And you are everything.”
His lips parted, his expression broken and grateful all at once, and then he groaned like he was in pain and crashed his lips onto mine in the most desperate kiss.
When we finally pulled apart, breathless, his forehead rested against mine and he whispered, “What would I ever do without you in my life?”
I smiled, whispering back, “Nothing. We’re stuck together for life.”
LIANA’S POV
After the little episode that morning, Killian kinda convinced me to follow him somewhere. He didn’t say much, just gave me that smug little smirk and said, “Just trust me.”
And since I was bored and had nothing to do anyway, I agreed. That was how we both ended up in the car. His hand was on my thigh the entire time while he drove with his other hand, casually like we weren’t heading to some mysterious destination he refused to reveal.
“Where are we going?” I asked him again, my eyes darting between his face and the road.
He smirked, not even looking at me. “Somewhere.”
I rolled my eyes. “That’s not an answer.’
“It’s all you’re getting for now.”
I sighed and leaned back into the seat. “Fine. Then I’ll just talk to myself the whole ride.”
“You already do that anyway,” he muttered.
“Rude,” I muttered right back. “So… any update on Cynthia?”
He raised a brow but said nothing.
“I saw the article,” I added quickly. “That blog post you made them publish? Damn. That was brutal. I mean… I almost felt sorry for her.”
He glanced at me. “Almost?”
“Yeah. Almost. But then I remembered how she beat me over seventy fucking times with a whip and tried to get me gang-raped, so… yeah, pity evaporated pretty fast.”
He didn’t respond. Just smirked again.
“I mean, you didn’t hold back at all.” I pulled out my phone and opened the article I’d saved. I read it out loud, laughing through my disbelief:
BREAKING: Cynthia Stone Wanted for Multiple Crimes
The divorcee Socialite, Cynthia Stone is now the subject of a criminal investigation following leaked footage and audio recordings that leave no doubt about her involvement in a series of heinous crimes. In the first video, Stone is seen drugging and sexually assaulting a married man, ignoring his obvious intoxication and inability to consent. Further investigation reveals she recorded the assault without his knowledge and sent the footage to his pregnant wife. A second clip shows Stone orchestrating a car crash meant to kill the same woman and her unborn child.
Stone is currently on the run. Authorities urge anyone with information on her whereabouts to come forward. A cash reward has been placed on her head.
I shook my head, scrolling through the comments. “God. People are even tagging her as a murderer. Damn! Very brutal!”
Killian chuckled.085
“I’d really love to get this cash prize though. I mean… I don’t know where she is, but I think those guys who worked with her? I remember them saying something like they were gonna ‘guard’ her or some shit. I think they might still be hiding her.”
Killian’s fingers tapped on the steering wheel lightly, but he said nothing. That little glint in his eye though, he knew something. I could feel it.
“What would you do,” he asked after a beat, “if you saw her now?”
I blinked, then looked at him slowly. “Cynthia?”
He nodded.
I didn’t even hesitate. “Well, even though I really want that cash prize so damn bad, I also want to deal with her. Like… really deal with her. I don’t think I have any pity left. Maybe a happy pity? I don’t even know what that means. Like… I’m happy she’s suffering, but if I’m being honest, I still wanna make it worse. I want her to feel helpless. I want her to understand what it means to be on the other end of power. I want her to pay, Killian. I really fucking do.”
Killian laughed. “Let’s see what you’ve got then.”
I frowned. “What?”
He didn’t answer. Just kept driving. I started to notice the road looked a little too familiar. My chest tightened.
“Wait… isn’t this the way to the warehouse?” I asked, my voice rising a bit.
He was grinning now. That smug, knowing grin.
