We opted not to take a car. The walk to the cabin is about ten minutes, but with our speed, we got there in three. The cabin had been cleaned, and a little renovation was done to bring things up to date since no one had lived there for a while. It belongs to me, but I never really use it since I’m always at the Alpha’s house.
“The cabin looks great. You did a good job, Zeo,” I told him.
“Thank you, but are you sure about her staying here?” he asked me.
“Of course. Someone should use it; it’s not like I’m going to,” I told him. He just nodded. I understood why he was concerned, but I couldn’t think about that now. I couldn’t think about Selene.
“I just got a text from the guards at the gate. They should be here soon,” he told me.
All of a sudden, I felt hot and nervous, and I had no idea why. I hadn’t even met the woman yet.
We stood in front of the house, and a few minutes later, a black SUV pulled in. The windshield was a little tinted, so I couldn’t see much, but I could tell a woman was driving and another woman was in the passenger seat. One of them had to be Doctor Lena.
The car stopped. The driver’s door opened, and a lady stepped out. She looked familiar, but I couldn’t remember where I had seen her before.
Then a few moments later, the passenger door opened, and the other lady stepped out. My heart rate increased. She closed the door, and finally, I saw her face. I gasped in shock and staggered back.
She looked a bit older, and she had cut her hair, but I would recognize that face anywhere.
“Selene?”
-Lena’s POV-
The shock was clear on his face; he looked like he had just seen a ghost. I looked back into the car and saw that the kids were still asleep. I had to get rid of Leo before they woke up. I knew sooner or later he would see them, but I hoped it wouldn’t be today.
I took a deep breath, looked at Zoey, and she nodded at me. I walked toward Leo and Zeo while Zoey stayed back to keep an eye on the kids.
“Alpha Leo, presume?” I asked, even though I knew it was him.
He looked so confused it was almost funny.
“Selene? What are you doing here?” he asked, staring at me without blinking.
“I’m here to help. You asked for my help, so here I am. And my name is not Selene; it’s Doctor Lena Everhart,” I told him.
“You? You’re the doctor?” he asked.
“Yes, I am. Now, I appreciate both of you coming here to welcome us, but we had a long journey, and I just need to get some rest. We can talk after I’ve gotten some rest,” I told him, then looked over at Zeo, who didn’t seem too shocked to see me. Did he know?
“Wait, wait, just wait a damn minute. I’m confused. You are Selene-my Selene. How are you also Doctor Lena Everhart?” Leo asked.
“First, I am not your Selene; you made sure of that six years ago. My name was Selene, and I changed it. That’s all you need to know. I’m here to do a job, which is to find a cure for the illness that has wreaked havoc on your pack. But if you’re uncomfortable with this arrangement, please say so now. I’m more than happy to leave and go back to my life,” I told him. He looked taken aback.
That’s good. I’m not the same girl he rejected six years ago. He needs me more than I need him, and he knows it, but still, he was unable to say anything.
“I apologize, Doctor Everhart, but you must understand how all this has come as a shock. We appreciate you coming here to help us. So we’ll leave you to get your rest, and we’ll meet up tomorrow to discuss specifics. How does that sound?” Zeo asked me.
“That sounds great, Zeo. Thank you,” I told him and even offered a small smile.
He grabbed Leo’s shoulder, and they started walking away. I breathed out a huge sigh of relief, but my relief was soon shattered when Liam called out to me.
“Mummy!” he shouted before running out of the car. Immediately, Leo and Zeo stopped walking and turned around.
Fuck.
“Hey, baby, why don’t you go back and stay with Aunty Zoey?” I told Liam.
He shook his head. “No, I want to stay with you, Mummy.”
He pouted, and when he got like this, there was no saying no to him unless I wanted a tantrum on my hands-and I did not want that right now.
“Okay, Liam, you can stay with Mummy, just don’t talk. Do you understand me?” I asked him in a stern voice so he knew I was serious.
“Yes, Mummy,” he said. I got up, placed him by my side, and wrapped my arms around him.
I looked straight at Leo.
“You have a son?” he asked me.
“Yes, I do,” I told him.
He looked down at Liam. I was sure he was trying to work out his age or find any resemblance, but my boy was shy around strangers, hiding his face behind my leg.
“Is he… is he mine?” Leo asked, his voice low and soft-very unlike him.
I couldn’t help the laugh that escaped my mouth, and both Leo and Zeo stared at me like I was crazy.
“Is he yours? You can’t be serious, Leo. No, he isn’t yours, and neither are his other two siblings,” I said. I might as well tell him; he would still find out.
“You have three kids?” he asked, shock evident in his voice.
“Yes, I do. And to stop this question session, this is what you need to know: they’re triplets, they’re four years old, turning five soon, and no, Leo, they aren’t yours. So, if you please excuse me-as I said before, we’ve had a long journey, and my children need to get some rest.”
As I said this, I looked him straight in the eyes without blinking so he wouldn’t know I just flat-out lied about the children’s ages.
“You’re right. I apologize. We’ll leave you be,” Leo told me, even though I was sure every nerve in his body was pushing him to stay and ask more questions. But it was clear to him that I wasn’t going to give him any more answers.
They both turned around and walked away, and this time, they didn’t stop. The moment they were out of sight, I let out a huge sigh of relief.
