“Oh my God, Lena, you handled that like a pro. You didn’t even need my help. I’m so proud of you. Are you sure he doesn’t-“
I immediately put my hand over her mouth to shut her up, then pointed to my ear with my finger, and she nodded.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“It’s fine,” I told her.
With all the questions he had, I couldn’t be too careful. He might be listening in on our conversation.
“Come on, help me get the others out of the car so we can put them to bed,” I told Zoey.
She walked to the car, and I smiled as I realized I had survived my first confrontation with Leo after all these years. I saw him, and I felt nothing. I was always scared that the next time I saw him, all the pain and hurt would come rushing back, but that didn’t happen.
I took Liam’s hand in mine and started to walk to the car, but Liam held me back.
“What is it, baby?” I asked.
“Mummy, who was that man, and why did you lie to him?”
-Alpha Leo’s POV-
I couldn’t believe it. If Zeo hadn’t been there, I would’ve thought my eyes were deceiving me-but they weren’t. It was her. It was Selene.
She looked older, but even more beautiful than the last time I saw her. And it was clear that she wasn’t the same girl I rejected six years ago. No-in her place stood a woman. A strong, confident woman. The way she spoke to me… she wasn’t rude, but there was authority in her voice.
And she was a mother. A mother.
At first, when I saw that little boy run toward her and call out to her, a wave of shock and dread washed over me. Before she left, she told me she was pregnant-but I didn’t care. I was so consumed by Scarlett coming back to me. But the children weren’t mine, which only meant one thing: she had moved on. She had someone else in her life.
And for some reason, that made my blood boil.
Somehow, we made it back to my house and into my office. I took my seat, and so did Zeo.
“What the hell just happened? And why are you smiling?” I asked him.
“I apologize, but I can’t help it. Karma or fate-whatever you want to call it-she’s really a cruel bitch. I mean, how is it that the one person who could possibly save our pack is Selene? After what you did to her, it’s a miracle she agreed to come back and help,” he said.
“Yes, I know that. And apart from changing her name, she’s changed in every other way too,” I told him.
“Yeah, I noticed that too. She’s no longer the shy, soft-spoken girl she once was,” he added.
“No, she isn’t. She’s a woman now. She’s a doctor. And she’s a mother. A mother of three.” Even saying it out loud, I still couldn’t believe it.
“Yeah, she is. How do you feel about that?” he asked.
The topic of children was a sore one around here. Selene had been pregnant, and I rejected her-rejected the baby-and got back with Scarlett. But for the past six years, Scarlett and I haven’t had any luck conceiving. It’s one of the many things that’s put a serious strain on our marriage. At this point, it feels like I’m married to a stranger-I don’t even recognize her anymore.
“There’s this burning rage in my chest at the fact that she has moved on and those kids belong to someone else,” I admitted to him.
“You’re the one who let her go, Leo. You can’t get angry or fault her for moving on with her life,” Zeo told me.
“I know that. And I think letting her go might have been the biggest mistake of my life,” I finally said, voicing the thought that had been rattling around in my head.
“You don’t mean that. You love Scarlett,” Zeo said.
“I loved Scarlett, I won’t deny that. When she came back, I was over the moon. But things weren’t the same. Now we’re like two ships passing in the night. I made a mistake, Zeo-a huge mistake. And seeing Selene-or Lena, whatever her name is now-only makes me more certain of it,” I admitted.
“You’re married, Leo. You have a mate. And it looks like Lena also has someone in her life-the father of her children. Whatever you’re feeling, you can’t act on it. Even if neither of you were tied to anyone else, Lena is here to work. She’s here to hopefully find a cure and save our pack. So you can’t go distracting her with talk about past mistakes, especially if you’re not a hundred percent sure of what you want. Don’t do anything to jeopardize this, Leo,” Zeo said firmly.
I couldn’t help but feel a flare of anger.
“You don’t think I know that? The pack always comes first. I would never do anything to jeopardize Lena finding a cure,” I said.
“I know you would never intentionally hurt the pack, but I wouldn’t be a good Beta-or a good friend-if I didn’t say it,” he replied.
I took a deep breath to steady myself. “I know. I know.”
“So, how exactly are you going to bring this up to Scarlett? I mean, she is going to be at the meeting tomorrow-she is the Luna,” Zeo reminded me.
“Fuck. I haven’t even thought about that. Well, if she has a problem, she’s just going to have to suck it up, because Lena is our last chance. She’s it. So Scarlett is just going to have to get used to it,” I said, even though I already knew this was going to spark a huge fight.
I still couldn’t figure out where it all went wrong between me and Scarlett. We used to be so in love.
“Alright then. Well, good luck with that. I’m going to head over to the clinic. I’ll see you tomorrow at the meeting,” Zeo said as he got up and left the office.
I sighed loudly and ran my hands through my hair. Never in a million years would I have guessed that the doctor would be Selene. Zeo was right-fate is a cruel bitch.
I turned on my computer and searched for Lena online. Different sites popped up. I should’ve done this the moment she agreed to help, but I was just so excited about her saying yes, and then we got so busy setting everything up for her that it completely slipped my mind.
I clicked on her Wikipedia page, and the first thing I saw was her photo-she was wearing a lab coat. I kept scrolling, reading about her many achievements. She really is amazing.
But then I stumbled upon something that made me stop.
According to the page, Lena’s kids are five years old-not four.
So… who exactly is lying? The internet-or Lena?
