It was Lena that I couldn’t get off my mind-and her kids. I had to know if they were mine. Maybe this was the reason Scarlett and I couldn’t have kids. Maybe I made a mistake, and I was meant to be with Lena. Maybe the reason Scarlett can’t get pregnant is because I already have children out there.
I stayed up all night pondering this. All of a sudden, it was morning, and the sun was rising. Zeo, the rest of the council, and I were meeting with Lena today. Once I introduce her, I’m going to take her to the clinic and then to her lab.
When I get back to the room, Scarlett is already dressed and putting on her makeup.
“Where are you off to so early in the morning?” I ask her.
She rolls her eyes at me. “Why do you care?” she snaps.
“You know what, Scarlett? It’s still early, and I don’t have the strength for your shenanigans. I asked you a question, and I want an answer,” I tell her.
She huffs and turns around to face me. “I’m going into town,” she says, and I know that if I press her for more, it’ll just lead to a fight. So I don’t bother.
“It’ll have to wait. We have the meeting with the new doctor today,” I remind her.
“Oh, the doctor’s here already?” she asks.
“Yes,” I answer.
“Fine then, as long as it doesn’t take too long,” she tells me, then goes back to applying her makeup.
At times like this-though they are rare-when we can agree on something, I see a glimpse of the woman I fell in love with, not the vile person she has turned into.
“Okay,” I tell her and head into the bathroom to take a shower. When I step out, Scarlett is gone, but I can still hear her heartbeat, so I know she’s still in the house.
I quickly dressed and then headed downstairs to the kitchen. I poured a cup of coffee and took a sip.
“Why do we have to meet the doctor? Didn’t you and Zeo already meet her yesterday?” Scarlett asked.
“It’s just to introduce her to everyone, that’s it. Don’t worry, it won’t keep you from whatever it is you need to do in town,” I replied, my tone dripping with sarcasm. Even before the sickness hit our pack, she’d been going out every day, never around. At the same time, she was neglecting her duties as Luna. We’d had that argument more times than I could count, and I was tired of having it.
I heard the door to the house open, and a few moments later, Zeo walked in.
“Why are you alone?” I asked him.
“I’m not. The council members are outside waiting. I just came here to get you,” he replied.
“Alright then, let’s get this over with,” Scarlett said as she got up from her chair.
“You’re coming with us?” Zeo asked, then looked at me like I was crazy.
“Yes, I am. I don’t have much time, so let’s get on with it,” she said before leaving the room.
“Leo, are you crazy? I thought you’d convince her not to come?” Zeo asked me.
“I thought about it. The thing is, sooner or later, she’s going to find out that Selene is the doctor, and then she’ll accuse me of hiding it from her. So, it’s better this way,” I explained to him.
“It’s your funeral. Let’s go,” he said, though I could see the smirk on his face.
We walked out of the house, and I greeted the three other men who were there. Our council is made up of ten members, excluding me and Zeo, but the sickness has reduced us to three.
“Alpha Leo, I hope you’re right about this doctor being the answer to our prayers,” Isaiah, one of the council members, said to me.
“I’m sure about it. And after meeting her yesterday, I’m even more confident because she has a personal tie to us,” I told him, which seemed to catch Scarlett’s attention.
“What are you talking about?” she asked me.
“You’ll see what I’m talking about when you meet her,” I replied.
Zeo informed me that Lena was already at her lab, so we all walked down there. When we arrived, I knocked and then opened the double doors. We all stepped inside.
“Wait!” Lena screamed, and we all halted.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry for screaming like that, but you can’t come into the lab. Too many germs get tracked in. Let’s go into the office,” she told us, and then we followed her into the office. I glanced at Scarlett, but she hadn’t gotten a good look at Lena yet.
We all entered the office, which was big enough to hold all of us.
“Again, I’m sorry for yelling at you like that. My name is Doctor Lena Everhart. It’s nice to meet all of you,” she said with a smile. That’s when I heard the shocked gasp behind me.
“You? What the hell are you doing here?”
-Lena’s POV-
I’ve had a long night. I barely slept. Karla woke up screaming because she was in a new place and thought she’d been kidnapped. After that, her brothers woke up, and we had lunch. When it was time to go to bed, they all slept with me, and I stayed up to watch over them.
So, you can imagine, after driving six hours and barely getting any sleep, I’m really not in the mood for any confrontation today. But, of course, it’s just my luck that she’s here today. I still don’t understand how or why we look so alike-it’s like looking into a mirror. The only way you’d know the difference is the scar on my hand, and Scarlett’s hair is longer than mine. But that’s it.
“Scarlett, I would say it’s nice to see you again, but I’d be lying,” I snapped at her.
“How dare you talk to me like that?” She snapped back.
“I apologize, I didn’t get much sleep last night. To answer your question, I’m here to hopefully find a cure for the illness that has plagued your pack,” I told her.
“I’m sorry, but why do the two of you look so alike?” One of the council members asked.
“I have no idea, but I assure you the similarities stop at our facial features. Apart from that, we are worlds apart,” I told him.
“You can’t work here,” Scarlett snarled at me.
