“Careful with her head,” Peter muttered as they maneuvered her toward his car. “She’s completely wasted.”
Scarlett adjusted her grip, trying to support more of Sable’s weight. “I’ve never seen her this drunk before.”
I watched from the shadows as they wrestled her into the back seat. Peter’s car door slammed shut with a metallic thunk.
Just as they pulled away, I turned the key in my ignition. The black sedan purred to life without a sound. I kept my headlights off until they reached the main road, then followed at a safe distance.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I hadn’t planned this-hadn’t planned to follow her tonight. But when I saw her stumbling out of that bar, mascara streaking down her cheeks, something inside me snapped. I needed to know she got home safely. I needed to see her, even if just from a distance.
Peter’s sedan pulled up to Sable’s apartment building, parking directly under a streetlight. I killed my engine around the corner, nestled in darkness. Through my windshield, I watched them struggle to extract her from the back seat.
“She’s out cold,” Scarlett said, her voice carrying through the quiet night.
I slipped out of my car once I saw them disappear into the lobby. Taking the other elevator, I reached Sable’s floor just before they did. The familiar ding announced their arrival as I ducked around the corner, pressing myself against the wall.
“Which apartment is hers again? Peter asked, his voice strained from carrying Sable’s deadweight.
“End of the hall, Scarlett answered. “Just help me get her to bed.”
I heard them fumbling with keys, then the click of her apartment door opening.
Minutes passed. I stayed frozen in place, barely breathing. Finally, her door opened again.
“She’s going to have one hell of a hangover tomorrow,” Scarlett said, stepping into the hallway.
Peter followed, then paused. He cleared his throat loudly-once, deliberately-before turning to leave.

I waited until the elevator doors closed behind them before approaching her apartment. Slipping inside, I closed it silently behind
I moved quietly toward her bedroom. The door was ajar, a sliver of light from the hallway cutting across her bed. She lay curled on her side, still fully dressed, her shoes kicked off haphazardly on the floor. Even in the dim light, I could see the tear tracks on her cheeks.
Dropping to my knees beside her bed, I studied her face. She looked so small, so vulnerable. My chest ached with a pain so intense I could barely breathe.
“Caelan,” she whimpered suddenly, her voice thick with tears though her eyes remained closed. “Why don’t you want me anymore?”
I froze, my entire body going rigid at the sound of my name on her lips.
“Did I do something wrong?” Her voice cracked, more tears leaking from beneath her closed eyelids. “You big jerk… you promised you’d protect me…”
Every word was a knife twisting deeper into my heart. I reached out with a trembling hand, gently wiping away a tear with my thumb.
“Yes,” I whispered, my voice so hoarse I barely recognized it. “I’m the biggest jerk in the world. The worst piece of shit alive.”
Somehow sensing my presence, she shifted in her sleep, instinctively moving toward me. Like a wounded kitten seeking warmth, she nuzzled against my palm, her cheek soft against my skin.
“Caelan,” she murmured, her voice suddenly soft as cotton candy. “Don’t go… please don’t leave me… Sabi will be good… Sabi will do whatever you say…”
That name-Sabi-hit me like a bullet to the chest. My special name for her. No one else called her that.
My heart is melting Seeing her trust me like this, depend on me like this-the love I feel is overwhelming. But with that sweetness comes crushing pain and guilt. How could I have pushed away the most precious girl in the world? How could I let her suffer like this?
I couldn’t resist any longer. I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers in the gentlest kiss I could manage.
To my shock, she responded in her unconscious state, her arms instinctively wrapping around my neck as if this was what she’d been dreaming of all along.
“Caelan…” she sighed against my lips, dragging out the last syllable in that pouty, playful way that drove me crazy.
A shiver raced down my spine, electricity shooting through every nerve ending in my body. I felt my self-control crumbling with each passing second.
“I never wanted to push you away, Sabi,” I whispered against her ear, my voice thick with emotion and desire. “Every moment without you has been torture, every second like burning in hell.”
I pulled back just enough to see her face, my words pouring out like a confession. “You are my life, my soul, my entire reason for existing. I love you more than my own life.”
I couldn’t hold back anymore. I climbed onto her bed and positioned myself above her, pressing my body against hers. I deepened the kiss, my tongue slipping between her lips to dance with hers. She responded with small, breathy moans that nearly drove me insane.
My lips traveled from her mouth to her jawline, then down the soft skin of her neck. I gently bit at her skin, feeling her tremble beneath me. My breathing grew ragged as desire consumed me like wildfire, my body tense with need.
“Baby, sit up for me,” I coaxed, my voice rough with want. “Let me take off your clothes, okay?”
In her drunken haze, Sable obediently sat up, her head falling limply against my shoulder. Her fingers traced mindless patterns across my chest, each feather-light touch setting my skin ablaze. My body went rigid, a groan catching in my throat as my blood boiled beneath her innocent caress.
I carefully removed her jacket, my movements gentle as if handling precious glass. I undressed her piece by piece-her blouse, her skirt-my hands trembling slightly. When she was completely naked, the cool air made her shiver, her body curling inward for warmth.
“Don’t be afraid, Sabi,” I said hoarsely. “I’m here.”
I pulled the covers over us, wrapping her in warmth. My lips found her skin again, trailing kisses from her collarbone to her chest. I paused at her breast, my gaze burning as I took in her perfect curves. I lowered my mouth to her nipple, circling it with my tongue before sucking gently, my actions tender yet urgent.
Sable’s back arched instinctively, a soft moan escaping her lips. “Caelan…”
The sound of my name spoken in that broken, needy voice was the most erotic thing I’d ever heard. My hands explored her body, one caressing her other breast while my mouth continued its worship. Her body responded to my touch as if we were made for each other.
My kisses moved lower, crossing her flat stomach, leaving a trail of heat on her soft skin. I stopped at the junction of her thighs, my breath catching as I gazed at her most intimate place. With reverent care, I parted her legs, exposing her to my hungry gaze.
I lowered my head, my tongue gently exploring her most sensitive spot. I moved slowly, savoring her taste, treating her like the treasure she was. My tongue circled her clit in deliberate patterns, alternating between light licks and deeper pressure.
Sable’s body jerked, broken moans falling from her lips. “Caelan… that feels… strange…”
Her reaction fueled my desire even more. My rational mind was crumbling fast, overwhelmed by primal need. One hand stroked her inner thigh while the other supported her hips, lifting her slightly to give me better access. My tongue delved deeper, tasting her thoroughly, my pace increasing as her breathing grew more erratic.
She clutched at the sheets, her body instinctively responding though her mind remained clouded by alcohol. Her legs trembled, alternately tensing around me and falling open in surrender.
Her every moan is tearing at my soul. I know she’s completely unaware right now, but her body is responding to me like it knows exactly who I am. I want to give her all the tenderness in the world, but I’m terrified my desire will ruin her. She is my everything-my sin and my salvation.
I raised my head to look at her flushed face. Her lips were parted, cheeks pink with intoxication, looking like she was lost in the sweetest dream. I kissed her forehead, holding her tightly against my chest, fighting to control the desire raging through me. Her breast pressed against mine, our hearts beating in tandem as if time itself had stopped.
“Sabi, I will always protect you,” I promised against her ear. “Always.”
Morning light filtered through the curtains, casting soft stripes across Sable’s sleeping form. Her breathing was steady now, peaceful. I hadn’t slept at all, just watched her face all night, my heart full of contradictory emotions.
I knew that when she woke up, she probably wouldn’t remember anything from last night. The thought both relieved and pained me.
Carefully, I slipped out of bed, making sure the blanket covered her properly. I leaned down for one last kiss on her forehead, then turned to leave.
Sable’s POV
I forced my eyes open, the morning light stabbing through my skull like needles. My mouth tasted like I’d been drinking straight vodka instead of cocktails.
I shifted slightly and winced. My body felt heavy, disconnected, like I was moving through thick water. But as I tried to piece together the fragments of last night, images started flooding back in vivid, mortifying detail.
The dream. Oh God, the dream.
Heat flooded my cheeks as memories surfaced with crystalline clarity. Caelan undressed me, his hands gentle yet urgent as he pressed me down and captured my lips in a deep, hungry kiss. His mouth traveled lower-to my neck, my collarbone, my breasts- leaving a trail of heat in its wake. Then he parted my thighs with his hands, lowering himself between them, and I felt his tongue flick and circle over my clit, sending shivers through my entire body…
Stop it.
I sat up abruptly, the sudden movement making my head spin. This was exactly what I didn’t need right now. My subconscious was apparently determined to torture me with fantasies about a man who had already moved on with someone else.
I pressed my palms against my burning cheeks. The worst part wasn’t even the dream itself – it was my body’s reaction to it. The unmistakable evidence that even asleep, even knowing he was with Elena, I still wanted him with an intensity that made me sick with shame.
My underwear was damp and sticky, physical proof of just how pathetic I’d become.
You’re disgusting, Sable Crawford.

I threw off the covers and stumbled toward the bathroom, desperate to wash away this feeling of self-loathing. He’s already forgotten you exist. He’s with someone else now, someone better, and here you are having wet dreams about him.
The shower spray hit my face, mercifully cold. I closed my eyes and let the water run over me, trying to scrub away not just the physical reminder of my humiliation but the emotions underneath.
“You really are enough, Sable Crawford. He’s already broken up with you, moved on completely, and you’re still here making a fool of yourself. He doesn’t want you anymore. When are you going to accept that?”
Twenty minutes later, I emerged from the bathroom wrapped in my terry cloth robe, my hair still dripping. The hot shower had helped clear my head.
I needed coffee. Strong coffee. And maybe a conversation with Scarlett about what exactly she’d put in those cocktails.
I grabbed my phone from the nightstand and settled onto the couch with my steaming mug, dialing Scarlett’s number. The least I could do was thank her for taking care of me last night, even if I couldn’t remember most of it.
