Life’s Spiced Up with Some Werewolf Reads

Chapter 17 – The Unwanted Daughter’s Three Mates

My breath hitched when something suddenly popped into my head: the mind-link. The mind-link my dad had received could be the reason for their strange behavior. I remembered clearly how his mood had shifted abruptly after that.

He had even offered to tell me a story.

But what could the message have been?

A wave of worry and fear washed over me as more unsettling thoughts invaded my mind.

I needed to leave this room before I lost my sanity.

A sigh escaped my lips as I stood up and walked toward the door, only to hiss in annoyance when I found it locked from the outside-just like always.

From the scents that drifted into the room, I could tell there were four guards stationed outside, watching my room as if their lives depended on it.

Among them were skilled fighters, trackers, and warriors.

A fresh wave of confusion washed over me as more questions began to form in my mind.

Why was my father assigning such heavy security to guard me?

Why had everyone in the pack become so secretive?

I could sense danger lurking ahead.

Something wasn’t right. But I couldn’t figure out what it was.

I was left in the dark, with no one telling me anything. The guards were useless-they wouldn’t say a word when I tried to engage them in conversation.

Despite everything, I needed to leave my room. I needed to see my parents, and I needed to shift.

I would slowly go crazy if I spent any more days confined to this room.

Maybe I should escape.

I wasn’t sure how I’d dodge the guards, but I’d figure it out.

I knocked on the door, startling the guards as the sound of their weapons echoed through the air, only to fall into silence.

“Open the door,” I yelled, banging the door hard. Still, no one spoke.

“What the hell is wrong with all of you? I’ve been stuck in here for a week! I want out!”

The knocks grew louder, but relief flooded through me when the door suddenly swung open.

Happiness swelled in my chest, and I almost danced in joy, but the presence of a maid stopped me in my tracks.

“Eve!” I gasped, staring at her in disbelief.

“I’m sorry, but you cannot go out,” she said, her expression cold and unreadable.

Confusion overtook me at her unwelcoming tone.

“Here’s your food. When you’re done, I’ll come back to pack it up,” she added, turning to leave.

“Are we fighting, Eve?” I asked, trying to read her body language. It screamed of sadness and anger.

“Of course, we’re not.” She laughed it off, placing the food on my glass table.

“Why the sudden change of attitude? And why can’t I get my own food?”

Silence filled the room as her eyes spoke volumes, but her lips remained sealed.

“This confinement is driving me crazy. Please, enlighten me. Please, Eve,” I pleaded, clasping my hands together desperately.

“We were instructed not to say anything.” She looked away, taking a tense breath.

“By whom? And why?”

“Your parents… because they don’t want you to be troubled.”

My brows furrowed in confusion as I stared at her. “Troubled?”

“Look…” Her voice trailed off as she turned her face away, guilt flashing across her features.

“The pack is under attack. It’s the worst assault we’ve ever faced, and in just one week, over a hundred people have died. Homes were destroyed, some set ablaze by the unknown attackers, and livestock were slaughtered.” She paused to catch her breath, while my jaw dropped in shock.

“Your parents kept this from you because they didn’t want to burden you. They’ve been working tirelessly to stop the attacks. They don’t want you leaving your room, which is why we’ve been assigned to watch over you. There are more than ten guards stationed outside your door, keeping watch day and night.”

“Oh my goodness!” I exclaimed, my hand covering my mouth in disbelief.

That explained the urgent message my dad had responded to that night.

“Hundreds of skilled warriors were deployed to fight the attackers, but only a few have returned alive, and all of them are injured. The pack is no longer safe. We’re working on a plan, but you have to promise me you’ll stay in your room. I don’t want you to get killed.”

Her words hit me like a pile of bricks, weakening me to my core. I didn’t know how to react.

I was dumbfounded as tears burned my eyes. While I was comfortable in my room, my people were being mercilessly murdered by these attackers.

Her hand gripped my face tightly, her gaze fixed on me.

“Until this is resolved, you’re forbidden from leaving your room. And if our plan doesn’t work, your father’s pack could be hijacked by power-hungry bastards. Everyone would be killed or enslaved.”

The bitter taste of sadness burned my throat, settling deep in my chest as I processed everything Eve had told me.

The pack was no longer safe?

The place I called home was no longer a safe haven for me?

I stared into space, unable to move, as the weight of the news drained my energy.

Of all the questions racing through my mind, only one echoed loudly: Why?

Why, when I was finally about to enjoy the best years of my life, was the pack under attack?

It hadn’t even been three months, and already, everything I knew was falling apart. The pack was in chaos because of some unknown enemies.

Why did my happiness always seem to be so short-lived?

I fought the urge to cry in front of Eve, but the harder I tried to hold it in, the more my tears threatened to spill.

What kind of luck did I have?

I just wanted to be happy forever. Was that too much to ask?

Suddenly, anger and hatred surged through me, as if I could fight back against the unfairness of it all.

“I know this is hard for you to process,” Eve said softly, her hand rubbing my left shoulder. Her face, full of pity, flashed a silent message that I recognized, and it only deepened my confusion.

I tried to keep calm, to push the negative thoughts from my mind, but it was no use. Nervousness was quickly taking over.

“What happened?” I asked, struggling to mask my emotions. But my trembling voice gave me away.

Eve was hiding something. I didn’t know what it was, but I could feel it. Whatever it was, it was important. And painful.

I kept muttering prayers to the Moon goddess in my heart, hoping everything would be fine, but nothing felt right anymore.

My body ached for the truth that Eve was hiding from me.

“You can’t lie, Eve. I can sense your nervousness. Just tell me the truth,” I half-screamed in frustration, irritated by her silence.
