I stared at it lying there, unable to process what I’d just read.
“What?” The word came out strangled. “She… she left?”
My pupils dilated with shock. “When? Where did she go?”
I lunged forward, grabbing Rodrigo’s sleeve. “Tell me where she went! Please!”
“No, this can’t be real!” I shook my head violently, as if I could shake the truth away. “She’s pregnant. How could she leave alone?*
I released Rodrigo and began pacing frantically. “I must have misunderstood. Maybe she just went to the hospital for a checkup?”
“Or maybe she’s visiting friends? She has to come back, right?”
I stopped abruptly, clenching my fists. “This is all my fault! All because of me!”
If I hadn’t killed Isabella, if I’d been braver back then…”
I began pummeling my chest with both fists. Once, twice, three times, until Rodrigo stepped forward and caught my wrists.
“Caelan, stop! This won’t help anything!”
My legs gave out completely. I collapsed onto the front steps, sitting heavily on the cold stone.
I buried my head in my hands, my shoulders shaking.
Muffled groans escaped from deep in my chest.
Rodrigo sat down beside me. “Caelan, she’s made her decision.”
“The letter clearly states she doesn’t want to be found. She needs time to heal alone.”
“As a man, you should respect her choice.”
I jerked my head up, my eyes burning with desperate obsession. “I can’t let her be alone! She’s pregnant-what if something happens to her?
“She’s in some strange place with no one to take care of her. If there’s danger…”
I’m not trying to interfere with her life. I just want to protect her from a distance, make sure she’s safe.”
I grabbed his hand. “Please tell me where she went. I swear I won’t approach her. I’ll keep my distance.”
“Caelan, listen to me.” Rodrigo gripped my hand firmly. “What she needs isn’t your protection. She needs time and space.”
“If you truly love her, you should give her the freedom to choose.”
“Sable is stronger than you think. She can take care of herself and the baby.”
“But I love her!” I was almost roaring now. “I can’t just watch her walk away!”
“Do you know what it feels like to lose the person you love most? Tears streamed down my face. “I’ve already lost everything. I can’t not even know where she is!”
I jumped up from the steps, started pacing frantically in front of the door. “No, I can’t do nothing!”
I kept running my hands through my hair until it was completely disheveled. She could be in danger anywhere!”
“What if someone wants to hurt her? What if she gets sick? What if something goes wrong with the baby?”
My voice climbed higher, edged with hysteria: I dont even know what city she’s int
“Does she have enough money? Does she have a place to stay? Will she take care of herself?”
“What if there are complications during delivery and no one’s there to help her… The thought made my face go deathly pale.
I stopped dead, clutching my head, letting out an agonized moan. ‘She’s gone… really gone…”
My body began shaking uncontrollably, as if I was freezing in the middle of winter.
I tried to stand steady several times, but my legs kept giving out.
I’ve lost her. Completely lost her. My voice sounded like breaking glass.
Suddenly, I raised my head, my eyes lighting up with near-manic intensity. “No, I have to find her!
I pushed past Rodrigo as he tried to stop me. I can’t just give up!
The airport! She must have left through the airport! I stumbled toward my car.
“Caelan, be reasonable! Rodrigo chased after me, grabbing the car door. “You won’t find her this way!”
“You’re in no state to drive. It’s dangerous!”
But I’d already started the engine. “I have to find her!”
I drove to the airport like a man possessed, nearly causing three accidents. Other drivers honked and cursed at me, but I didn’t care.
At the airport, I ran frantically from gate to gate.
“Excuse me, have you seen a pregnant woman? Brown hair, very beautiful…” I stopped every airport employee I could find.
I pulled up security footage from the previous day, scanning through countless blurry figures desperately looking for Sable’s silhouette.
“This one! Is this her?” I pointed excitedly at a figure on the screen, but the security guard shook his head-too unclear to tell.
When the airport search turned up nothing, I raced to the train station.
My shirt was soaked with sweat, my hair was a mess, and my eyes were bloodshot.
“Please help me check-a pregnant woman, on last night’s or this morning’s trains.”
The staff searched but found no information.
As night fell, I dragged my exhausted body to the bus station.
I’d been searching for an entire day. My voice was hoarse, my legs weak.
“She might have taken a bus. It has to be that…” I muttered to myself, unwilling to give up the last shred of hope.
But again, no results. All my inquiries disappeared into thin air.
Late at night, I sat on a bench outside the bus station, completely broken.
I covered my face with my hands, sobbing brokenly, “Sable… I can’t find you… I really can’t find you…”
Passersby stared curiously at this disheveled man, but no one stopped.
I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…” I kept repeating, as if apologizing to someone in the empty air.
In the early hours of morning, I dragged myself back to my car.
While driving, I nearly crashed into guardrails several times due to exhaustion.
My hands wouldn’t stop shaking. I could barely grip the steering wheel.
My vision kept blurring, making me think I saw Sable’s figure, but when I looked closer, it w
I whispered to myself: “Sabi, I will find you.”
Sable’s POV
Seven Years Later
“Sable, I brought our little princess back! Kate called out with a grin.
The front door chimed as it swung open. Kate stepped inside. Behind her, a small figure bounced excitedly.
Caelyn burst through the doorway, her pink backpack bouncing against her shoulders. She wore the yellow sundress with tiny daisies that we’d picked out together last weekend, and her curly chestnut hair was still in the neat braids I’d done that morning.
Caelyn’s face lit up as she spotted me across the waiting room where I was taking Mr. Henderson’s blood pressure. “Mommy! I got a gold star today!”
