I look to Callen, who steps forward beside me.
“The water tests came back clear,” he announces. “The tap water is safe for now, but we’re still proceeding with caution. Bottled water will be available for everyone until Jake gives us the long-term all-clear.”
A wave of relief passes through the crowd, though unease still lingers.
Callen continues, “That said, we’re asking everyone to scent-check their water before drinking, washing, or cooking with it. The toxin has a distinct bitter and metallic smell. If anything seems off, don’t take chances. Report it immediately and switch to bottled water.”
I take the floor again, my voice steady and firm. “Any natural water sources-creeks, rivers, ponds-are off-limits until further notice. Whatever is contaminating them is coming from outside our borders, and we won’t risk anyone’s life until we know the source.”
A few heads nod in understanding; others exchange uneasy glances.
“One more thing,” I add, my tone sharpening. “Stay clear of the borders. We’ve detected signs of hunter activity creeping closer. Leave those areas to the enforcers.”
Paige shifts beside me, her eyes scanning the crowd. I feel the tension radiating from her, the protective edge in her energy humming just beneath the surface.
Remy steps forward next. “We’re increasing patrols and coordinating with enforcers from the River and Midnight packs to strengthen our defenses. Some of them are here tonight. Please make them feel welcome-they’re risking their lives to stand with us.”
A hesitant applause breaks out, growing stronger. Pride swells in my chest.
Parker follows. “We want to thank everyone who has donated blood for emergency treatment and remind you all that if poisoning happens again, speed is crucial. Don’t wait for symptoms. Go to the healers immediately-no hesitation, no pride. Even if you’re unsure, get help. It’s better to be treated unnecessarily than to wait too long.”
His words hang heavily in the air. Murmurs ripple through the room as the gravity sinks in. I pause, allowing the moment to settle before speaking again.
“I know many of you are scared,” I say softly. “And you should be. What we’re facing is dangerous. The hunters have changed their tactics-they’re using poison, stealth, and psychological warfare. They want to make us doubt ourselves, to turn our fears inward until we tear apart what they couldn’t destroy from the outside.”
I sweep my gaze across the crowd, meeting as many eyes as I can. These are the wolves I’ve fought alongside, laughed with, mourned with-my family. “But here’s the truth-they won’t win. Not because they’re not trying, but because we are stronger than fear. We are a pack. We protect our own. We stand together.”
The room falls silent, every wolf focused on my words.
“We’ve been hit before,” I continue. “Many of us lost parents to these hunters. They thought they had won. But look at us now. We’re still here. We came back stronger because they will never break us. That’s what it means to be part of this pack. That’s what family means. We stick together.”
A murmur of agreement rises from the back. Someone calls out, “We stand with you, Alphas.”
My throat tightens, but I nod steadily. “Good. Because we stand with you too. And I promise this-we will find who’s behind this. We will stop them. But to do that, I need every one of you to stay sharp, stay alert, and stay united.”
Callen steps closer, his shoulder brushing mine in a quiet gesture of solidarity. “Together,” he says simply.
“Together,” the pack echoes, the word rising like a heartbeat through the hall.
Paige’s hand finds mine, squeezing gently. I can feel the faint pulse of her power beneath her skin-strong, steady, undeniable. Can they sense it too? Can they see what she’s becoming?
Part of me hopes they do, that they recognize the strength she carries. But I know better. There’s still a potential leak, and wolves within the pack who might report back to their own Alphas. We can’t risk them knowing what she is-not yet, not until the time is right. Still, I can’t help the swell of pride rising in my chest. She’s mine, ours, and she’s far stronger than anyone realizes. Fierce, brave, and unshakable. Even in a room full of wolves, she shines.
Looking out at the faces before me-the wolves who have trusted me with their lives, who have chosen to stay when running would have been easier-I feel a fierce determination settle deep inside.
“Let the hunters come,” I say, my voice low but resolute. “Let them think they can scare us into hiding. They don’t understand what we are… what it means to be a pack. They can poison our rivers, mark our borders, take their shots in the dark-but they will never take our home, and they will never take our spirit.”
The hall erupts with growls and cheers of agreement, shaking the room with their power. I feel hope flare, burning bright through the fear.
Paige smiles at me-proud, fierce-and I know she feels it too. Whatever challenges lie ahead, we will face them together. Because we are The Phoenix Pack, and we do not bow. We rise.

**Paige’s Perspective**
**Paige’s POV**
As the pack hall gradually empties, the murmur of voices softens, fading into the background as wolves depart in pairs or small groups. Some head home to their families, while others linger, engaged in hushed conversations. The heavy tension that had filled the room moments ago has lifted, replaced by a delicate, almost fragile calm.
I should feel relief. I should feel safe, knowing they’ve heard Ryder’s words and that his steady voice has reassured them. Yet, standing here and watching him-tall, composed, his tone calm as he gives final instructions to the enforcers stationed near the doors-I can’t stop my heart from pounding wildly in my chest.
He’s utterly breathtaking like this. So powerful, so controlled-every inch the Alpha he was always meant to be.
It’s easy to forget that only a few days ago, I was leaning over him, my hands pressed against his cold, barely breathing chest, silently begging him not to leave me. That memory flashes sharply through my mind, stealing my breath away. And somehow, he feels it. He always does.
His eyes find mine across the room, locking with that quiet intensity that has always undone me. The rest of the world melts away-the voices, the creaking floorboards, even the faint scent of stale coffee-all vanish until it’s just the two of us.
The bond between us thrums, hot and alive.
Ryder finishes his last command and strides across the room toward me. The crowd parts around him like the sea, and when his hand brushes my arm as he passes, a spark of heat rushes through me.
“Come with me,” his smooth voice whispers into my mind.
It’s not an order. It’s softer, rawer, almost pleading.
My breath catches, but I nod, turning to follow him. His fingers entwine with mine, guiding me toward the far corner of the hall. The warmth of his skin against mine feels electric, and by the time we reach the narrow door to the old storage room, my heartbeat is pounding so loudly I can almost hear it in my ears.
He pushes the door open and glances inside to make sure we’re alone. The small space smells faintly of wood and dust. Boxes were cleared out recently when we brought in bottled water, leaving the room mostly bare.
Ryder steps inside first, closing the door behind us and leaning back against it for a moment, as if bracing himself against the weight of the world. The air feels thick, heavy with everything left unsaid.
For a heartbeat, neither of us speaks.
Then Ryder exhales slowly, his eyes locking onto mine. The composure he wore outside is starting to crack, the burden of leadership slipping just enough to reveal the exhaustion beneath. But beneath all that fatigue, there’s something else-something fierce, something hungry-that mirrors the ache inside me.
“I needed to see you,” he says, his voice rough around the edges. “Away from everyone else. Away from… all of it.”
The way he looks at me steals my breath again. His usual restraint is unraveling.
“I felt it,” I whisper. “When you spoke to them. You held the whole room together. You…”
He closes the distance between us in two quick strides, his hands rising to cup my face tenderly. “Don’t do that,” he murmurs. “Don’t pretend I’m the only one holding this pack together. I felt your power, Paige. Even when you try to hide it. It’s there, humming beneath your skin, steadying everyone in the room… steadying me.”
