“But what if she isn’t?” he asks.
“We have to start somewhere. You take her samples, and then get a sample from the last kid to get sick. This disease is smart, and I’m very sure it has mutated. But all diseases have the same primary structure, and that’s what I need to find. So, we need to get to work immediately because they’re not getting any better. Take your supplies and head over to the clinic; it’s not far from here, and it’s hard to miss-it’s a white building. Go get the samples, and I’ll finish setting up here,” I explain to him.
“Of course, I’ll go over there right now,” he tells me, packing his supplies into his bag and leaving.
I start unwrapping everything and setting them up, plugging things in. I lose track of time, and before I know it, the door to the lab opens, and the last person I expect to see walks in.
“Scarlett.”
“Selene.”
“Actually, it’s not Selene, it’s Lena-Doctor Lena Everhart,” I tell her.
“Selene, Lena, what difference does it make? You’re still the same pathetic little girl who begged Leo to take you back after he rejected you,” she says, walking closer to me.
“What are you doing here, Scarlett?” I ask her.
“I came here to finish our conversation from this morning,” she tells me.
“What conversation?” I ask her, folding my arms and staring at her as if she were dirt underneath my nails. I can see it makes her angry.
“I told you to leave,” she growls at me.
“Yes, you did, but you’re not the one who brought me here. If you have a problem with me being here, take it up with Leo,” I tell her, making sure to look her right in the eyes so she knows I’m not scared of her.
“What exactly are you hoping to achieve here? If you’re here for Leo, you’re just wasting your time. He’s mine. He chose me,” she shouts, and her voice echoes around the room.
I can’t help the laugh that bubbles out of my mouth. “How insecure are you, Scarlett? Not everything is about you. Haven’t you noticed the disease that’s ravaging your pack? Yet all you care about is yourself. You know what? I’m done talking to you. Get the hell out of my lab,” I tell her, turning around, but she grabs my hand.
“Don’t you turn your back on me, you peasant!” she snaps.
“Scarlett, let go of her now,” Leo growls.
-Alpha Leo’s POV-
I couldn’t sit still after my talk with Zeo. He left to go talk with Gabe, and then I answered the emails I had and signed some documents that Zeo left for me on my table. Since the whole disease situation began, he had taken over the day-to-day running of our business in the city because all my focus had to be on the pack and finding a cure.
After I finished all of that, I still couldn’t sit still. I had this feeling in my gut that something was wrong, but I didn’t know if I should trust it-it could just be me wanting an excuse to spend more time with Lena.
I sat down for another ten minutes, but I couldn’t do it anymore. I got up and left the house. It had been about two hours since I last saw her, and if I got there and nothing was wrong, she would probably think I was stalking her, so I better come up with a good explanation.
I arrived at the entrance of the lab. Her assistant’s car was gone, but there was another scent that wasn’t Lena’s-a scent I would recognize anywhere: Scarlett. What was she doing back here? I quickly pulled open the door and rushed into the lab. What I saw the moment I entered angered me. Scarlett had a strong grip on Lena’s hand, and I don’t think either of them had noticed I was there.
“Scarlett, let go of her now,” I growled.
Shocked, she released Lena’s hand and turned to face me. I could see the fear and stubbornness in her eyes.
“What are you doing here, Scarlett? How dare you attack her?” I asked as I walked slowly toward her.
“How dare I? I can do whatever I please. I am Luna!” she shouted.
“And I’m the Alpha,” I growled so loudly that the beakers on the table shook. Scarlett took a few steps back and went quiet. I was sure she could see now that I was serious.
“Lena is here to find a cure for our pack, and instead of coming here to find out how you can help her, the only thing you’re doing is harassing her. Why, Scarlett?” I asked, but she didn’t respond. She just stared at me defiantly.
“Fine, you don’t want to tell me the reason you’re here. That’s all good and fine, but you’re going to apologize to Lena before leaving,” I tell her, and that immediately loosens her lips.
“You’re funny, Leo. There’s no way I’m apologizing to her,” Scarlett scoffs at Lena.
“Yes, you are, and we’re not leaving here until you do,” I tell her.
“Leo, all this isn’t necessary. I don’t need her apology; I just need her to get out of my lab and not come back again,” Lena finally speaks up.
“You heard her, Leo. She doesn’t want my apology, and it’s not like I was ever going to give it,” Scarlett says.
“That is enough!” I shout, and she falls silent.
“I feel like I’ve been apologizing all day, but I am sorry for this, Lena. I promise you it won’t happen again,” I tell her, and she just nods her head, not saying anything. I look at her and see the pain she’s doing her best to hide. What the hell did Scarlett say to her?
I’m not blind; I know how cruel Scarlett can be to people, but it never bothered me before because of how much I loved her.
“Scarlett, we’re leaving. Right now,” I tell her, and she glances at Lena, hissing at her one last time before walking out of the lab. I’m torn. I want to stay and comfort Lena, but I know that’s not my place, so I leave the lab and follow after Scarlett.
I get close to her and grab her hand, stopping her.
“Leo, let go of me, you’re hurting me,” she pleads, so I loosen my grip, but I don’t let go.
“What the hell is wrong with you, Scarlett? I really want to know. What exactly possessed you to go and confront our last and only hope for a cure?” I ask her.
“She’s not our only hope. We can get someone else. I don’t want her here, Leo,” she tells me.
“You’re funny, really funny, Scarlett. There isn’t anyone else. Lena is our only hope, and you may have just scared her away,” I tell her.
“Well, good riddance to her then,” she scoffs.
“Why, Scarlett? Why don’t you want her here?” I ask her, but she doesn’t say anything. She just stares at me. But the thing is, after being with Scarlett for six years, I know how to read her; I know her tells.
“Are you kidding me right now? Is that it? You’re jealous and fucking insecure?” I ask her, and then she rips her hand out of my grip.
