Someone whispered, “It’s Alpha Sebastian!”
“Which Alpha Sebastian?” another asked.
“How many Alpha Sebastians could there be? Are you crazy?”
“The one from the Silver Peak Pack! What’s he doing here? Wait, what did he just say?”
The banquet hall erupted in murmurs and astonishment.
Alpha Sebastian would never attend an event like this. Yet here he was, standing tall and calm, dressed in black like a gathering storm.
He stood at the top of the stairs, eyes sweeping the room with a cold detachment that made even the highest-ranking wolves lower their gaze.
Then his eyes locked onto Sebastian’s companion.
And they didn’t move.
The atmosphere shifted. The crowd fell silent, stunned.
He wasn’t here on business.
He wasn’t here for Xavien.
He was here-for her.
Sebastian’s breath caught.
He had broken through a fortress to save her the night before. And now, he had walked into enemy territory, in front of the city’s most powerful families, and looked at her as if she were the only person in the world.
The heat of countless stares bounced around her, whispers rising like a storm.
So he was the one.
The so-called “savior.”
Cira didn’t meet Sebastian personally, but everyone knew the Alpha Sebastian. The moment she recognized him, her face drained of color and twisted with rage. The calculating look in her eyes collapsed, replaced only by fury.
Her glare snapped to the woman at the center of it all, venomous and unblinking.
In the heavy silence, her unspoken thoughts screamed:
Why did you survive? You were supposed to vanish, to be disgraced and discarded.
But instead, she had returned to this room-wounded, bruised, and with Alpha Sebastian standing firmly at her side.
This reversal shook Cira to her core.
Sebastian descended the stairs with deliberate calm. Each step was measured, yet every Alpha present instinctively gave him space.
A shiver ran beneath her skin.
He stopped directly in front of her, so close she could feel the weight of his presence envelop her like a protective cloak.
She lifted her chin defiantly, refusing to shrink under his intense attention.
“Alpha Sebastian,” she said softly, her voice steadier than she expected.
His eyes met hers, and for a brief moment, the world seemed to fall away.
“I happened to be dining here,” Sebastian explained casually, as if he were merely a passerby who had wandered in after a meal. “I saw the commotion and decided to see what was going on.”
One hand slipped into his pocket, his gaze sweeping the room once more.
There was something about his relaxed posture that radiated an overwhelming dominance. Every wolf in the room could feel the power of the Alpha emanating from him-even Xavien instinctively straightened his back in response.
Her heart began to beat faster.
What was this strange sensation washing over her? It felt like recognition, like something awakening within her that she hadn’t known existed.
She watched as Sebastian’s sharp eyes landed on Cira, and she could swear the younger woman physically shrank beneath his gaze.
The game had changed completely.
Sebastian
I slowly turned to face Cecilia, lowering my eyes with a softness meant to reassure. My voice dropped to a gentle murmur as I said, “I overheard someone casting doubt on your character and couldn’t stay silent. I hope my stepping in hasn’t caused you any trouble.”
I studied her closely, noticing the flicker of surprise she tried to hide at my unexpected defense. Inside me, my wolf Soren stirred with satisfaction-he had been restless ever since we caught the scent of her in that hotel hallway.
“It’s actually me who’s been troubling you, Sebastian,” she replied, her tone steady though tension lingered beneath.
“Would you like me to explain further?” I offered, giving her the choice to accept or decline.
After a brief pause, she nodded softly. “If you would.”
I could almost hear the rapid thumping of her heartbeat.
Turning back to the room, I addressed the crowd with calm authority. “Last night, I was the one who rescued Cecilia Moore.”
A hush fell over the guests as I continued. “I was at the hotel meeting with clients when I came across Cecilia in the hallway, clearly confused and distressed. The men accompanying her seemed suspicious, so I alerted hotel security. Together with the staff, we intervened just in time to prevent any harm from coming to her.”
I made sure my explanation was both clear and concise, carefully avoiding details that might ignite more gossip or speculation. The situation was delicate enough without stirring additional complications.
Cecilia looked at me with gratitude-and something else, a spark of curiosity. She seemed quietly wondering why someone of my standing would take an interest in her troubles. I caught her gaze rising to meet mine, and that look stirred a deep, primal response within me.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Xavier clenching his fist. His wolf was reacting to mine-perhaps sensing a rival, or simply acknowledging the presence of a dominant Alpha in what he considered his domain.
The White family had gone silent. The guests nodded in agreement with my account. My word carried weight here; no one dared challenge it.
Even if Cecilia had been attacked by a dozen men, even if there were undeniable proof, these people would have chosen to pretend they saw nothing rather than contradict me. Questioning my statement meant challenging my role as Alpha of the Silver Peak Pack-and no one in this room had the power or the foolishness to do that.
Cecilia
I could hardly believe Sebastian Black was standing up for me. The way he laid out the facts so precisely, leaving no room for doubt or rumor-it spoke of experience and respect I hadn’t expected from someone I barely knew.
Before I could find the words to thank him properly, Xavier stepped forward, his arm possessively draping over my shoulders.
“Thanks for saving my mate!” he declared, as if marking his territory with a physical claim.
Without hesitation, I shrugged off his arm, my expression as cold as the winter air. “Alpha Xavier, you have no right to speak for me. Besides, I wasn’t joking about the divorce. You’ve already signed the papers. Tomorrow at noon, the cooling-off period ends.”
The shock on Xavier’s face was almost laughable if it weren’t so painful. His voice cracked with panic. “You’re really going through with the divorce?”
He still refused to believe it. After all his betrayals, all his lies, he thought I loved him too much to leave-that this was just anger speaking.
But the only thing in my eyes was icy resolve.
I glanced at my watch. “The police will be here any minute. Instead of worrying about our divorce, maybe you should be more concerned about your precious Cici and your mother. You can’t run from either-your darling mentioned last night that you were involved in this scheme as well.”
Xavier’s eyes widened in horror. “You think I would do something like that to you? I would never hurt you!”
I stared at him silently for a moment, then let out a bitter laugh. “Never hurt me? How can you say that with a straight face?”
“Did you think I just found out about you and Cici? I’ve known for a long time about every date, every hotel room, every vacation…”
My voice was soft but every word carried the weight of years of pain. “Have you ever felt a knife twist inside your heart-not enough to kill you, but enough to torture you day and night? It’s like being trapped in the deepest circle of hell. And what did I do to deserve this? How did I fail you?”
Xavier
Each word hit him like a blow, and I saw the struggle in his eyes as guilt washed over him. Too little, too late.
I noticed Sebastian had positioned himself between us and the crowd, whether intentionally or not. His broad shoulders shielded me from view, giving me a moment of vulnerability without becoming a spectacle.
At that moment, a group of uniformed police officers entered the room. They approached the Green and White families, showed an arrest warrant, and took Cici, Dora, and Xavier into custody.
Cici howled in protest as they led her away, but even the White family couldn’t intervene. The evidence was overwhelming.
With Alpha Sebastian backing my story, there was nothing they could do except scramble to call their lawyers.
The dramatic scene was over-those who missed it would hear about it for weeks. The main players were exhausted, while the spectators buzzed with excitement. This would be the talk of the packs for days to come.
Slowly, the banquet hall began to empty. Sebastian and his assistant Beta Sawyer were among the first to leave.
I waited deliberately until Sebastian had gone before I made my own exit. Instead of hailing a cab immediately, I walked to the small park behind the hotel and sank down against a tree.
The ground lights cast a soft glow, and my red dress stood out against the dim surroundings.
The truth was, I already knew exactly who had orchestrated the attack and who had merely played a part. I understood that Xavier hadn’t taken a direct hand, and that Dora had only helped lure me to the hotel at Cici’s request. But I chose not to clarify this to the police. I wanted them all arrested and questioned.
I hated Xavier. This was what he deserved.
“Tap, tap, tap…” Footsteps approached softly.
