Chapter 21 – His Replica Mate

“Don’t say it like I have no reason to be upset. She was once your mate,” she snarls at me, and I can’t help but laugh.

“Yes, she was my mate. I got together with her after you left me, or have you conveniently forgotten that? Then you came back, and I left her for you. I rejected her and chose you, and still, you doubt not just her, but me. I’m the one who should have doubts,” I say, and I can see the fear and guilt in her eyes as she looks anywhere but at me.

“Since we’re on the subject, tell me, Scarlett, where exactly do you go every day and come back so late at night that you neglect your duties as Luna and forget that you have a mate and a husband?” I ask her.

“Answer me!” I growl loudly, and she flinches back.

The moment they left, I let out a huge sigh of relief and slumped down in my chair. I did my best to hold back my tears. How dare she?

She knew exactly how to hit me where it hurt; she knew just which screw to twist. Yes, I am now rich and successful, but I wasn’t always like that. It’s true what she said-my parents were poor farmers, but it never bothered me because we were comfortable just the three of us. We had food to eat, and we were happy. It wasn’t until I started attending school that it began to bother me. I was bullied every single day because of my status, and it didn’t help that I was born an omega.

That’s why, after all those years of constant bullying, it came as a surprise to me when Leo asked me to marry him. I thought it was a joke or a prank at first, but then he showed me how serious he was, and after that, people stopped with the insults and talking behind my back.

Even after Leo rejected me, I did my best to rise in this world, bringing my parents along with me. So, I know I’m not that girl anymore, but it still hurts when people bring it up.

I still don’t understand why I share a resemblance with such an evil person like Scarlett. I try to shake it off and continue working, but I can’t. All I want to do is see my kids, hug them, and tell Zoey all about what happened today.

I sent a message to Emmett to store the samples and go home to rest. We would start working on them the next day. After that, I made sure to lock up-the only other person who has a key is Emmett, so there’s no way Scarlett is getting in unless she breaks in.

I got into my car and drove back to the house. Zoey told me last night, after the kids had gone to bed, that they were getting restless. They were tired of being cooped up in the house. I get it-they’re wolves; they’re not meant for indoors. Plus, they have so much land and nature surrounding them back at the house, but I couldn’t let them out before I knew exactly what we were dealing with.

I went to the clinic today, which meant that I might have been exposed. No, I was definitely exposed, but I had made provisions for this. I had turned half of the garage into a decontamination room. So, I parked my car, got out, took off my clothes, and put them in a plastic bag that I sealed. Then, I got into a steaming hot shower. I got out, dried off, and put on some new clothes.

It was a long process, but with my line of work, I was used to it. I got into the house, but I didn’t hear the kids. I could hear the sound of the TV, so I walked toward it.

The three of them were sprawled out on the carpet, sound asleep. Lian had both of his legs draped over each of his siblings. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched them. My sweet boy slept like an octopus, and his siblings were so used to it that they no longer complained. But still, I gently removed his legs. He stirred a little, but then went right back to sleep. Now, where was Zoey?

I went to the kitchen and found her cooking something that smelled amazing.

“Hey,” I said to her.

She lowered the heat and turned around. “Hey, you’re home early. Did something happen?” she asked, scanning my face to see if anything was wrong.

“What happened, Lena?” she asked with a very serious expression on her face, making me reconsider whether to tell her what happened back at the lab. I knew Zoey and her temper-she could get so angry that she might go confront Scarlett, and I didn’t want that to escalate into a physical fight.

“It’s nothing serious. What are you cooking? It smells amazing,” I said, trying to distract her.

“It’s beef stew, and I know it smells amazing. It also tastes amazing. Now stop trying to change the subject and tell me what happened,” she insisted. I should’ve known better; once Zoey was onto something, she was like a dog with a bone-she wouldn’t let it go.

“Fine, I’ll tell you, but on the condition that you promise not to flip out and do something stupid,” I said, and she just stared at me.

“Fine, I promise,” she finally relented.

“Thank you. Like I said before, it wasn’t anything serious. I met with Leo and his council today to introduce myself, and Scarlett was there. She was very surprised to see me and made her stance on me working here very clear. She told me to leave and even told Leo to kick me out, but instead, he took my side. She got angry and stormed out of the meeting,” I explained. I noticed she had a huge smile on her face.

“What’s with the smile, Zoey?” I asked her.

“Nothing, this is just my face. Don’t mind me. Please continue,” she said, but the grin was still there. I was pretty sure it would soon be wiped away once she heard the rest of the story.

“Well, she left, and I went to the clinic to check on the patients. After that, I was back at the lab, and Emmett finally arrived, so I sent him to the clinic to get some samples. While I was busy setting up, Scarlett came back. She told me that she didn’t want me here. I told her to take it up with Leo, and that just made her-“

“Even more angry, she accused me of coming here to take Leo from her, and that got me angry. So, I called her insecure and turned around to get back to work, thinking that she would take that as a hint that I didn’t want to talk. But instead, she grabbed my hand, spun me around to face her, and proceeded to call me a peasant,” I tell her, and just like I predicted, the smile immediately disappears.

“She said what?”

Zoey sounded very dangerous at that moment.

“You need to calm down, Zoey. Remember you promised. Plus, I’m fine; she didn’t do anything to me. Luckily, Leo came in at that moment, and even if he hadn’t, I would’ve handled it myself. So please, take a few deep breaths for me,” I tell her. After a few moments, she takes a deep breath and retracts her claws.

“I’m calm now. Don’t worry, I won’t go off and rip that bitch’s head off, at least not today,” she says with a smirk.

I don’t say anything because, with Zoey, that’s as good as I’m going to get.

“So, what did Leo do?” Zoey asks.

“He apologized to me and dragged her out of there. She didn’t seem happy about it,” I tell her.

“I bet she wasn’t. But what’s the deal with the both of them? I thought they’d be living la vida loca, but it seems like something is wrong with their marriage,” Zoey finally voices what she’s been thinking.

“Yeah, I think so too,” I say.

“Well, isn’t karma just wonderful? I mean, he left you for her, and now he’s in a horrible marriage,” Zoey says, and then she starts laughing.

“Oh, thank you, goddess. It’s good to know that things like that don’t go unpunished,” she adds, as she goes to check on what she’s cooking.

“Don’t say that, Zoey. We don’t know what happened,” I tell her.

“Oh, my sweet Lena, this is why you’ll always be a better person than me, and that’s why we fit; you’re the calm, and I’m the storm. I know you’re thinking the same thing, but you’re too good to say it, so I’ll say it for the both of us,” she says, and I just shake my head.

“Here you go,” she says, dropping a bowl of stew in front of me.

“Thanks. How long have the kids been asleep?” I ask her.

“For about an hour. They should be waking up soon,” she tells me as she joins me at the counter.

“So, what else happened today? Did Leo bring up the kids?” she asks. I take a spoonful of the stew, and it tastes absolutely amazing; the meat is soft and chewy.
