She stepped closer.
“Kester…” she called gently, “Look at me.”
I kept my eyes locked on the floor.
A moment later, I felt the shift in the bed as she knelt in front of me
That pulled my eyes up.
“I’m not leaving you,” she said. “You hear me? I’m not going anywhere. I promised I’d stay with you through it all… Therapy, the whole ride. I’m not running. I’m not giving up on you.”
My throat tightened, my breath catching like a hitch in a gear.
She leaned in and kissed me.
“I’ll come back,” she whispered against my lips. “I always come back to you.”
I reached up slowly and cupped her cheek, pressing my forehead to hers. “Let do at the pack.” I lied hoping she’d let me. me take you, then. I also have a thing or two I need to
Her fingers brushed my jaw gently. “Kester… no,” she said softly. “You don’t need to do that. I can go with the driver. I need this to be something I do on my own. You understand that, right?”
Something in me twisted, bil 1 nodded slowly, even if everything in the screamed otherwise.
“Okay,” I said. Then I swallowed and added, “Then I’ll wait outside. won’t follow you in, I swear. Just… let me be the one to get you there safely.”
She smiled and shook her head softly, I insist, Kes. I can go with the driver. I won’t be long. I promise.”
That fucking word again.
Promise.
“And,” she added, “This should be a test for you… A test to learn to trust that I’d do the right thing and come back to you.’
My fingers curled around her wrist. I held it lightly like she was glass
“Okay,” I said finally swallowing the lump of j there and back.” panic. “Okay. Just… come back to me, Kasmine. No detours. No second stops. Straight
She smiled, nodding. “Straight there and back.”
And just before she stood up, she leaned forward again, kissing the center of my chest like she was soothing the wild thing living beneath my ribs.
And it worked.
For now.
But God, if she took too long…
If she didn’t text…
If she came back smelling like anything unfamiliar…
I wouldn’t survive it.
KESTER
It felt like the second Kasmine stepped out of the house, my world began to fall into chaos.
Ten fucking minutes. That’s all it took.
My phone lit up like a rabid Christmas tree – texts, emails, missed calls. It was almost like they had piled up, waiting for me to be alone and vulnerable, just to test my promise of self-control to Kasmine.
Alfred was found dead in his house this morning, and his wife told the authorities I’d been there. She said she heard my voice before the gun went off.
Said she saw me leaving by the time she ran out of the kitchen.
Fuck.
I gritted my teeth, pacing around. My body couldn’t stay still even if tried. The only thing louder than the pounding of my heart was the snarl rising in my chest.
Why now? I wanted to stop getting my hands dirty. But someone was playing a dangerous game.
The Black Ledger had been tampered with again. Forty percent of the firewall layers were cracked through like they were nothing more than damp paper.
That level of hacking? It wasn’t some amateur with a grudge. This was professional.
I must say, whoever this person was, was smart as fuck. They covered their damn tracks like a ghost.
But the infuriating part? Every single camera feed during the breach was wiped.
Someone inside knew exactly where to look, what to touch, and what to erase.
As if that wasn’t enough, Alpha Wes was threatening to bring down hellfire and brimstone. Mr. Ray just called to inform me.
And then… Mellors.
Alpha fucking Mellors.
He had sent over a dozen texts.
He wants to take back all he had done for me since I decided to treat his daughter like trash. But he wouldn’t. He couldn’t.
I’d already pulled the strings. The contingencies were in place. If he dared make a move, he’d lose more than I ever would.
I ran a hand down my face, fingers trembling with fury. The kind of fury that used to end in blood… The same kind I’d promised I’d control.
I snatched my phone off the table and dialed the only person I could trust to clean this up fast.
“Norlan.” I didn’t wait for his usual pleasantries, “We have a corpse, a frame job, the ghost hacker, and two Alphas sniffing for war. Get to my house. Now.”
And just as I was about to drop the call, my phone lit up with another text, and it was from Alpha Kex. I wanted to ignore it, but his words halted me.
“I swear to fuck, Kester. I’ll strip. And I’m going to hit you where it hurts the most.
I never get scared. No,
But this text? It sent a shiver down my spine, leaving a trail of goosebumps in their wake.
Why the fuck did I feel that way?
KASMINE.
The weird stares I received as we navigated through the small corner leading to our house were a bit disturbing.
I felt like one who just got herself into a deep, dirty scandal. And that feeling sucked. But I’d live through it.
“Dad,” I greeted when I walked into the living room. He stood with his hands recognized.
He was Rex. Blaine’s close friend. his waist, listening to an angry young man who I
