I spun and started running in a different direction, but I could feel my feet getting cut up on rocks, and twigs lying on the unsteady ground.
I could hear running behind me, but I tried to run faster. It wasn’t until I saw a stream of fire erupt over my shoulder and hit a tree trunk, that I turned to see how far away Fenrir was, not expecting him to be so close.
I tried to turn and run again, but he grabbed me and pinned me down, as I screamed and kicked, but just like my dream, he climbed over me. He used one hand to hold down one of mine, and his knee to pin down my other arm, leaving more burises.
“Your mother was a fighter too” He told me, as I struggled beneath him “Careful Maddie, you’re making me hard, and it’s been a while”
“GET OFF ME!”
Fenrir smiled, and leaned in, he kissed me hard on the mouth, but I bit down hard on his lip, and ripped my head back, tearing his skin.
He howled, and sat up, before he started punching me in the face. Each blow took me away from reality once more, until I felt the sweet relief of darkness once more.
I was freezing, and tried to reach for my blanket but when I didn’t find it, I opened my eyes. Everything was out of focus, but I could smell Fenrir’s and Troy’s scents, along with the scent of burning flesh.
I looked around for a way out of the cage, but I saw nothing but the cage door, and that was locked. My back was still stinging, and I could feel the ripped threads of my dress were glued to the wounds by my dried blood that pulled whenever I moved, so I just laid back down.
“Ava?” I tried, but I still couldn’t hear her, so I tried my mates “Jax, Cody!” I started crying when they still didn’t respond “Please, please find me”
I was still crying when my captors walked in, or maybe it had been my crying that had alerted them that I was awake again.
Troy was holding a key and a silver knife. He unlocked the cage, and knelt beside me and glared at my face as he reached out, I cringed in fear, but he ignored me, and grabbed my face.
“Do you feel the fire inside of you yet?”
“I feel a hatred inside me, doesn’t that count?”
He punched me in the stomach, and I gasped, as I curled to my side and threw up.
“Disgusting” Fenrir said lazily “So, she still doesn’t feel it, start cutting into her. More pain should help. Pick a body part that will induce the most pain”
“The knee caps should do it” Troy suggested, and my heart started racing “The pain’s quite intense”
“You may begin, then?” Fenrir leaned against the wall of the hut with his arms crossed.
I tried to fight, but Troy was too strong, and sat down on my stomach, nearly cutting off all the air, and then I felt his disgusting hands pulling up my dress to my thighs, and then there was pain.
Searing, intense pain, that had me screaming in seconds, Troy cut deep into my knee cap, over and over again. I screamed so loudly I thought I’d lose my voice, but even then, Troy continued stabbing me, and slicing through the bone.
“STOP!” I screamed in agony, as Troy stabbed the silver blade deep into my knee, while I cried and screamed “PLEASE, STOP!”
“ENOUGH” Fenrir said angrily “WHY ISN’T THIS WORKING!? WE’RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!”
“She’s lost alot of blood” Troy warned “We need to inject her again, or she’ll be able to link again soon!”
“FINE, INJECT HER!” He shouted, and ran his hands furiously through his hair “I NEED TO THINK!”
When Fenrir stomped out of the hut, Troy injected me again, before standing up, kicking me hard, before slamming the cage door shut, and walking out.
When I was alone, I curled up crying, but the tears only burnt my eyes more. I could feel my blood flowing out of my knee, and making me even more light headed.
“I’m sorry, Ava” I thought, knowing she could hear me, even though she couldn’t speak back “If I was stronger, none of this would be happening”
I curled up crying, my whole body was on fire, but thankfully I passed out quickly.
The sun was coming up when I heard the sound of the cage door screeching open. I was beyond exhausted at this point, and simply rolled over to see Fenrir walk back in. Every twenty minutes or so, Troy and Fenrir would come in and attempt a new form of torture, only to get angry and leave in frustration again.
“Time to get tortured again already?” I asked casually, no longer did I have it in me to be afraid, I was to numb from the pain “Don’t you sleep?”
Fenrir glared at me, his eyes squinting in disgust “Your mother was mouthy too, it wasn’t her most attractive quality”
“My apology” I yawned “I’ll try to make this a more pleasant interaction for you”
Fenrir growled, and kicked me in the ribs. I felt the bond break, and I gasped as the air was knocked out of me, and curled in on myself, as I tried not to throw up again.
“I don’t get it” He complained “Your mother molted from pain, what’s different about you!?”
“No clue” I said breathlessly “How about you let me go, and I’ll collect the info for you?”
Fenrir glared at me “Troy really did a number on you, didn’t he?” He shook his head “I told him to hurt you while you grew up, but I didn’t think he’d take the job so seriously and break you so completely’
“Or maybe, neither of you have the power to break me” I countered “Because you’re both weak, pathetic little boys, maybe that’s why neither of you can bring on the molt. Or maybe, just maybe, I’M NOT A F*CKING PHOENIX”
“You’re definitely a Phoenix” Fenrir growled, as he started pacing “I can sense it. Your mother ran away after that pr*ck left her” He said to himself “We were in these woods, and he came after her, begging her for forgiveness, and she screamed, and exploded, I thought coming here would do it, I thought it…” Fenrir paused and smiled at me “Betrayal, it was never the psychical pain, it was the emotional pain, it was the betrayal, that’s how it happened”
I was confused by the excited look on his face “TROY!” He shouted, and a few seconds later, he ran into the hut “Link her mates, and tell them exactly where we are”
Troy looked confused, and looked at me with wide eyes, but he nodded and went silent for a few seconds “They’re on the way”
“Good” Fenrir smiled “Go set up the poison, I know how to bring on the molt”
“Yes, your majesty” He said and left the hut.
Fenrir smiled at me “I can think of two ways to bring out the molt” He sounded excited “You’ll bring it on if I threaten to kill one or both of your mates, or if either of them betray you, and I don’t have time for one of them to do that, so we’ll go with threatening their lives”
“You can’t take them individually, let alone together!” I pointed out, I told him, but all I could focus on, was the fact that I’d see them soon.
“That’s where the poison comes in” He gave me a broad smile “Just lay back and wait, this will all be over soon”
“True” I told him, as I took deep breaths “Because you’ll be dead!”
Fenrir pulled me from the cage and tied me to a log “Wait here until they arrive” He ordered, and I saw the girl from earlier lying over the fire, burning, but neither Troy or Fenrir seemed fazed. Was this the flesh I’d been smelling?
“You killed her?” I gasped, feeling a horrific guilt erupt inside me.
“She let you get away” Fenrir said casually, as if we were discussing the weather.
JAXSON’S POV
When the sun began to rise, my mental state was extremely unstable, we hadn’t stopped in hours. I’d forced Noland to stop and shift back nine times, to check that Madelyn was still in these woods, but I was losing faith in him. We’d searched more the 3/4th of this forest, and other than her hairpin, we hadn’t found anything else. There were no signs of her.
“Jax, we need to” Cody had shifted, and drinking some water that one of the new guards had brought when we swapped over the search party, when Troys voice filled my head.
“Good morning, boys” He said.
“TROY!” I shouted “YOU B*STARD, WHERE IS OUR MATE!?”
“IF YOU’VE DONE ANYTHING TO HER, WE’LL” Koda screamed furiously, but Troy cut him off.
