“You don’t know?” she snapped bitterly. “Blaine is dead, Kester! Dead! Along with twelve others! The entire opposition meeting was bombed!”
I stopped breathing.
No.
No fucking way.
My world tilted, and my vision blurred.
“I…” My voice died in my throat. My brain scrambled, trying to make sense of what she was saying. A bomb? Dead?
That wasn’t the plan. That wasn’t the fucking plan!
Before I could ask anything else, the line went dead.
She’d hung up.
The hallway felt like it closed in on me.
Blaine is dead…
Twelve others…
I staggered a step back and leaned against the cold wall, staring Maky shot, beg for weeks gay gestating so se se f hadn’t misheard.
What the fuck just happened?
And who the hell had done it… if not mey
KESTER.
TEN YEARS AGO.
I never clicked with anyone the way I clicked with my little sister.
Kasmine had this energy that could light up an entire fucking room, and, somehow, every part of me too. She was laughter. She was warmth. She was this endless spark of joy that refused to burn out, matter what life threw at us.
Since that night four years ago, when I finally caved and let her be my friend, things had shifted for the better. She even made me see how good her mother was, and now, I was also cool with her, and I even called her Mum.
Jorja was a nice woman. She filled in the gap for my mum. And even though I still despised my mum for leaving me, a tiny part of me still hoped she’d walk through the door one day. That she’d hold my face, look me in the eye, and tell me she was sorry for ever leaving me.
I knew it was stupid.
But it was still hope.
But I guess that day would never come.
And that was fine. Kasmine and Jorja were doing a great job at keeping me happy the best way they could.
“I got you!” Kasmine’s high-pitched giggle filled the room as she delivered another soft jab to my side.
I let out an exaggerated yelp and clutched my ribs like she’d broken something vital. “Ouch! You beast!”
She squealed with laughter, bouncing on the bed like she had won an actual wrestling match.
“That’s seven wins for me!” she beamed, holding up seven little fingers. One would think she had just conquered the damn world.
She was so small and adorable. She was also very cute to think that her small, feeble self could beat me seven times in a row in a wrestling match. Have you seen me? I’ve been gyming since I was twelve!
But she was pretty. God, she was so fucking pretty.
“That’s right, Mine. You won,” I grinned, lunging forward to tickle her.
She shrieked in protest, squirming under my grip and giggling so hard I thought she’d choke on air. “I’ve told you! That’s not how you pronounce the Mine in my name!”
“And I’ve told you before…” I narrowed my eyes dramatically, pausing just long enough to make her squeal again, “I. Don’t. Care!”
Then I went in again, fingers dancing mercilessly over her ribs as she screamed with laughter..
Eventually, we collapsed beside each other, breathlessly gasping like we’d run a marathon.
Kasmine rolled to her side, her cheeks flushed pink, with strands of her wild curls sticking to her forehead.
Then suddenly, she sat up straight like a light bulb had gone off in her head. “Oh! It’s almost time.”
Time for what tblinked, sitting up beside her and looking at herth worry on my face,
She glanced at the clock, then back at me. “Damian. He asked me to come over, Said his dad got him a new video game. We’re all going over to play it together.” he stood up, adjusting her rumpled dress.
I stared at her for a long second, the corners of my smile faltering,
Damian. Again.
I didn’t know why his name always made my jaw clench or why I fel a sharp jab of something unpleasant in my chest every time she said it with that little glimmer in her eyes,
He was just a boy. One of het school friends.
But the idea of her running off to sit with him almost every evening play with him, laugh with him… I didn’t like that shit one bit.
Besides, why was she so happy about a video game? The thought grated on my nerves for no reason.
“No, Kasmine. Stay with me. Don’t go,” I said quickly, reaching out and gently clasping her wrist. My fingers tightened just a little. “We were just having fun, weren’t we? I mean… it’s just a video game.”
She narrowed her brows, “Not again, Kes. You never let me visit my friends. And now, they are starting to get closer to each other than they were to me. They think I don’t want to be their friend anymore.” She said sadly.
Her shoulders dropped, and she stared down at the floor like she was ashamed to feel what she did.
I sighed, brushing my thumb over her wrist. “You don’t need them, Mine. You have me. That’s all you need. You’re the only friend I have, apart from Norlan.”
I leaned in, softening my tone. “And that’s enough for me. Come on.
She was the only one that kept me sane in this house. Whenever she wasn’t at home, I’d feel like my world would fall apart. Her happiness and playfulness kept he alive every time. It was always too quiet and lonely whenever she went to see those friends of hers that I had come to hate with a passion.
Even though I had tried to come up with some solutions, like spending time in her room whenever she was out or holding onto her favorite toy just to pretend she was there with me, it still wasn’t enough.
“I can’t. I love my friends,” She pressed with sadness written all over her. hile puttin
“More than you love me?” I asked, tilting my head while putting on wounded smile.
Her eyes shot up to meet mine in panic. “No! No, I love you, Kester. You’re my big brother. You’re everything to me, but…”
“But what?” I pushed softly.
She hesitated. And that hesitation was enough.
“You don’t need them. You can see them another time.”
I reached for her other hand and gave her my most hopeful grin. “Actually, I picked out a movie for us to watch tonight. One of your favorites.” I announced, hoping it would cheer her up, but it didn’t.
