“This must be pretty serious if you’re being this secretive. I’m your best friend, Zeo; you’ve got to tell me,” I tell him.
He lets out a huge sigh and runs his hands through his hair. “It’s Zoey,” he tells me.
“Zoey? Why does that name sound familiar?” I asked him, but he didn’t say anything; he was waiting for me to put it together, and after a few moments, it clicked.
“NO! Zoey? Like Lena’s Zoey?” I asked.
“The same one,” he tells me.
“What? How?” I asked him.
“The day she and Lena came to the pack, it was like there was this tug in my heart, an invisible thread connecting the both of us. But when I looked at her, thinking she felt the same thing, all I saw in her eyes was anger,” he says.
“Well, that’s because Zoey is human; she isn’t a shifter like us, so the mate bond wouldn’t affect her the same way,” I explain to him.
“And the anger is meant for me, but you happen to be my beta and best friend, so it’s going to spill over onto you too. I apologize for that,” I tell him, and he laughs.
“What can you tell me about her? Lena talked about her, but I never actually met her,” he says.
“I think the best way to describe her is that she’s a mama bear. She’s fiercely protective of those she loves, especially Lena. She’s from a very rich and influential family, but she doesn’t act like it. In fact, I think she hates it,” I tell him, and he has a smile on his face.
“None of what I just said is scaring you off, is it?” I asked him.
“Hell no, it just makes me want to know her more,” he says.
“Alright then, but you’re going to have to be easy on her. She’s human; she doesn’t feel things the same way we do,” I tell him.
“Yeah, I know that. So, where have you been all day? I stopped by the clinic and you weren’t there,” he says.
“I stopped by Lena’s house to apologize for Scarlett’s behavior,” I tell him.
“Did something else happen?” Zeo asks me.
“She went back to the clinic to confront Lena. It was a whole thing. I had to drag her out of there. I confronted her, and she was behaving completely erratically, and then she just walked out. After that, I went to the clinic and spent a few hours there, but afterward, I didn’t want to come home, so I decided to go to Lena’s. I caught her just as she was about to go on a walk with her kids,” I tell him.
“Really? You met the other two kids?” he asks me.
“Yes, I did. They’re all incredible, Zeo,” I tell him.
“Why do you look like that? You look sad,” he tells me.
“She lied. Lena lied to me,” I tell him.
“What are you talking about?” he asks, a confused look on his face.
“She lied about the kids. I’m their father, Zeo. Those kids are mine,” I tell him.
“How exactly do you know that? Lena said she lost the baby,” he says.
“I know, and I believed her when she told me, but I saw them today. I saw Luke, and he looks exactly like me,” I tell him.
“I’m fucking confused here. Who the hell is Luke?” he asks.
“He’s one of the triplets, and I saw him today. He looks just like me at that age, Zeo. No fucking difference. The triplets are mine. I’m their father. Lena didn’t lose the baby.”
Alpha Leo’s POV
“This is crazy. She must know that Luke looks like you. So, what did she say when you saw him?” Zeo asks.
“She looked so scared, Zeo; I mean, the look on her face. I was the reason she was scared because she knew that I had put two and two together.”
“I knew if I confronted her, there was a high chance she would high-tail it out of here. She would take the kids and leave, and I would never see them again. They’d both be gone, and any chance of saving our pack would be gone with them. I couldn’t confront her. I mean, it was clear from her reaction that she didn’t trust me, and I don’t blame her. When I saw that look on her face, I wondered why she would be scared, and my mind went back to that day.”
“What day?” he asks me.
“That day back at the club, when she came to tell me she was pregnant and the way I dismissed her. I told her the baby wasn’t mine. I basically made them bastards. What the hell was wrong with me?” I ask, mostly to myself, as I run my hands through my hair in frustration.
“I won’t make you feel better by saying you were blinded by love or something like that. Because what you did to her that day was wrong. If you remember, I tried talking to you, but you didn’t want to hear anything I had to say,” he tells me.
“I know, I know that, and I regret that day. Today, seeing the kids, my kids, knowing that they’ve had to grow up these past six years without me in their lives makes me regret it even more,” I tell him.
“Well, there’s no point dwelling on the past. What are you going to do now? How are you going to fix it?” he asks.
“I’m going to show Lena that she can trust me, that I’m a changed man, so she can trust me enough to let me be in the kids’ lives,” I tell him.
“And is that all you want? To be in the kids’ lives? What about Lena?” he asks me.
“I want her in my life. I want her with me, by my side, as my mate and my Luna. She’s the one. I was so blinded by Scarlett that I didn’t see it. But she’s it for me, Zeo,” I tell him.
“I’m happy that you finally figured it out. But this is a very hard and tricky road you’re about to embark on. Your first roadblock is going to be Scarlett; it’s not going to be easy to get rid of her. I mean, your marriage might be over, but she loves the power that comes with it. She’s not going to want to let that go, and neither are her parents,” he tells me.
“I know that, which is why I want her followed. If my suspicions are right and she is cheating on me or doing something bad, then I’ll have a reason to divorce her-and her parents. No matter how powerful or rich they are, there’s nothing they can do about it,” I tell him.
“Alright then, seems like you have a plan for that. What about Lena? How are you going to get her to trust you?” he asks me.
“I’m just going to show her who I am-the man she fell in love with-and hopefully it’s enough to win her back,” I tell him.
“Okay, but I do have to remind you, even though it’s hard to hear, if it looks like none of this is working and she’s pulling away, you’re going to have to stop. Because in this situation, you don’t come first-the pack does, and Lena is our only chance at survival,” he tells me.
