“What rubbish! How can someone lure our pack members? This is preposterous. I don’t believe you.” Adam insisted.
“It doesn’t matter whether you believe me or not, this is precisely what’s going on. I have done my share of investigation.”
I paused.
“I sent teams out to investigate the place they were mostly spotted, and most likely living, it looked legit. The teams found the remains of several human females buried behind a rundown hotel.”
“They have been hunting humans?” Rick asked aghast.
“Yes, it is hard to get hold of werewolf females, so they have been trying to build a pack for themselves with human women. Most of them don’t survive.” I said solemnly.
There was a stunned silence in the room.
“But why would they do that?”
“Several reasons. The youngsters disliked their jobs, hated listening to the older seniors always telling them what to do. Having to follow too many rules. They want to move up in the rank quickly. So, this is their way of rebelling. It’s easy to misguide these kids.” I finished explaining.
“You have any idea who could be that person?” Rick asked.
I turned towards him; he was the only one who was understanding me. The rest were still sceptical. I could sense it.
“I am not sure; I am still investigating. It could be anyone, even one of us.” I looked pointedly at everyone. A few of the Alphas bristled.
That led to another round of arguments. After an hour, Adam and his betas stormed out as usual. Without Adam, the remaining Alphas decided to keep each other notified, increase the security, and retired for the day. I ran my hand through my hair and slid back in my chair. I was exhausted and still sleep-deprived.
“So, Rick’s sister is your mate? Do you know about her mother?” Alpha Michelson whispered to me.
I opened my eyes and turned to face him. I glanced at Rick, making sure he was out of the earshot.
“What about her mother?”
“Well, she was a witch!” He said conspiratorially.
I raised an eyebrow, “She was a human, a keeper to be precise, as far I know.”
He shook his head.
“She was a witch and a perfect one. She used to make a few spells for us. That is how she met her mate. Rick’s Father.”
Werewolves sometimes did get unusual mates, even interspecies, like a cat shape-shifter. But those were rare. Witches are also humans with the capability to do magic, though a truly born was rare nowadays. A wolf having a witch mate was even rarer. I wondered why Alice never mentioned it.
“Interesting!” I replied, “but that doesn’t change anything, she is still mine.”
The older man gave a sly smile.
“I miss that feeling of being a newly mated wolf, the love, and possession you feel for your mate is so……magical.”
He looked ahead as if recalling his old times. Michelson was a good guy, old and reliable. I gave a goofy smile.
“Your mate is special; daughters of the witches inherit their power since your mate is a half-witch. She might not be that powerful, but she is still special. Her blood would bring power to their mate, many Alphas were interested in Rick’s sister.” He said, raising an eyebrow meaningfully.
A growl escaped from my chest. It meant Alice was not safe. I could not tolerate others coveting my mate.
“Alpha Michelson, what else do you know about my mate’s mother?” I asked. “She was a beautiful woman if your mate is anything like her. She would be a beauty. Even more, a reason to keep her safe.” He roared in laughter.
I tried to keep my wolf down, who was on the edge.
“Her coven leader was not happy, I heard when she left to become Luna of the
Jade Moon pack. But Alpha Sheldon managed it.” He replied.
I had several questions swirling in my head, and the only person who could answer them was Rick.
Savannah sat in front of me, staring intently. I had narrated my entire situation with Mark and Lucian to her. I was taking a massive risk, but I did not have a choice.
“Well, that’s pretty messed up,” she responded.
I nodded in agreement.
“You understand, don’t you?” I pleaded with her.
“I think your friend Emma is right, you should talk about this with the Alpha, and clear your stand. He will be heartbroken because he had been waiting for his mate desperately. He was particularly difficult in the last two years. But it would be for the best, I believe.”
I stared at her in disbelief. She was fine with me dumping her Alpha. I did not expect such a response from Savannah.
“Really? You think so?” I asked.
She hesitated for a moment.
“The pack recognizes the fact that you are still unmarked, and unmated.” She said pointedly.
“Crap! So, those make-out sessions were not leaving enough scent to convince them.” I thought internally.
“I heard them talk about it, mainly in the gym and kitchen. They wondered if you are his true mate. Mates do not remain unmarked for so long. The pack is offended. They feel you are intentionally hurting their Alpha. They love him. He provides for us and keeps us safe. He has kept you safe. They don’t understand why he is drawn to you; some think it might be a mistake,” she said.
I stared mournfully out of the window and felt miserable for myself. I could not even get the courage to tell Lucian my turmoil. Maybe they were right, maybe I was not good enough for him.
“So,” She broke me out of my depressing trance, “I believe in the welfare of the pack rather than individual happiness. It’s better to be a lone Alpha than having a Luna who is not interested.” She said matter-of-factly.
I disliked her reasoning. My wolf growled.
“Lucian is mine!” Lana was on the edge, and I was having a hard time keeping her under control.
“Well, I am still thinking over it,” I said.
“So, you agree to be our Luna?” Savannah asked, she seemed suspicious.
“No, it’s hard to explain. I know nothing about Lucian, and with his history of violence, I mean he killed his dad’s beta. I am simply scared. I want to avoid starting a pack war. Furthermore, I cannot do this to my pack and my brother. “
Savannah looked offended.
“Alpha Lucian is nothing like that, he killed the former Beta because he deserved it. I can’t imagine our pack without our Alpha,” she said, gesturing around us and continuing.
“I am sorry I didn’t mean to offend you, I am just…. rambling I guess.” I sighed. Why was it so difficult to accept Lucian and live with my fate?
Savannah still looked pissed.
“Savannah can you please tell me more about Lucian, I mean why did he kill his Beta?”
I could sense her warring with herself.
“Look, I get this is probably a big secret, please, just tell me what happened.”
