“In that case, you shouldn’t have rejected me just because you were jealous.”
It was so shallow of him to think that Zuri rejected him simply because she was jealous. Stupid people saw stupidity, thus if that was how Xaden saw it, Zuri didn’t want to waste her energy explaining herself.
Together, they went for the midnight prayer, which only the direct family members and their partners could attend. It meant Alpha Roland and Luna Karina were not there, as were the rest of the elders.
King Amidas was standing next to his queen, staring at their dead daughter, chanting a sorrowful song. All of them there did the same thing. The midnight prayer would last for only fifteen minutes and after that, they would go back to their own bedrooms.
This ritual continued for a week and every time, before and after the ritual, Xaden would make sure to have sex with Zuri. He was in a hurry to get her pregnant because right now, not only did his brother not have an heir, he didn’t have a queen either.
“Heavens… you are so great.” Xaden thrusted from behind, as he used one hand to support his body and the other hand to rub her clit. He bit her shoulder when he came undone. “Let my seed warm your womb.”
Zuri hated that he talked whenever they had sex, and Xaden talked too much. It would be easier for her to pretend he was someone else if he was quiet.
“You like it, right?” Xaden’s body pressed hers beneath him. He caged her, as he licked her nape.
“Hm.” Zuri made a grunting noise to boost his ego, hearing that he started to yap that he was right to let her watch him being intimate with another woman.
“Now, you have learned.”
Zuri didn’t say anything. She was spent, but her mind didn’t want to pull her back to the peaceful embrace of sleep. Instead, she stared into the distance until she felt Xaden’s even breath on top of her and then pushed his big body away.
She literally crawled from under his body and then walked to the bathroom to clean herself. Usually, Xaden would do it for her, but he was too exhausted.
All day, he and Zuri’s father had been talking with the elders, edging them to dethrone the king in a very subtle way, that was why Xaden had been spending his free time to fuck Zuri.
Money was being splurged from the River Creek pack’s treasury to get those elders to their side.
Zuri put on her dress and then glanced at Xaden, who was sleeping soundly.
‘He only uses you.’
‘You are nothing, but someone to fuck and give birth to his bloodline.’
“I know,” Zuri muttered under her breath, as she walked toward the balcony, letting the wind caress her sweaty skin. She stared at the clear sky that was still dark and caught sight of a white wolf behind a tree.
She recognized the white wolf as Mac, Khaos’ wolf. The mention of his name made her heart flutter and before she could think what she was doing, she was already halfway across the garden, where she saw Mac was.
The white wolf was still there, as if waiting for her.
“What are you doing here, alone?” Zuri asked, she knelt down and caressed Mac’s head. The wolf nudged her hand and licked it, which made her giggle.
She missed her cub. The cub was still with Caiden and it seemed, the gamma would keep it as long as possible. Zuri didn’t mind it, since she had told him to keep it for good.
She then sat down on the ground, not caring much about the dirt, as she ran her fingers through the white wolf’s fluffy fur.
“Where are you going?” Zuri raised her brows when the wolf walked away. She stood up and felt sad, but when the wolf kept looking back at her and didn’t move, she realized that the wolf was asking her to follow him. “Do you want me to follow you?”
It was not a good idea to roam around the palace very early in the morning, especially when the moon was still bright.
But, that was what Zuri did. She followed the white wolf and when he picked up his pace and started running, Zuri also shifted into her beast.
Her black beast was like a shadow in the dark, as she moved between the trees, letting the white wolf take her deeper into the woods. She felt free and happy when she ran this fast, everything flashed before her eyes, until she realized she was not alone in the woods.
The white wolf took her toward a crowd of people gathered in what seemed like a clearing. There were around seven people there and one of them was Khaos.
The white wolf went straight to him and her eyes met with his gray ones.
Zuri didn’t know what she expected to see here, but then her eyes fell on the man, who was hanging from a tree with a piece of wood as his foothold. She immediately understood this was a scene that she shouldn’t have seen.
She was still in her beast form. At first, they didn’t realize that Zuri was there, because her beast was black. It helped her merge with the darkness so well. But the moment they realized their alpha’s attention was distracted and they followed his line of sight, the six of them shifted into their beasts immediately.
Out of instinct, the black beast dashed away from there, she ran as fast as her paws could take her. All of her senses told her that she was in great danger. And if she didn’t manage to get away from this situation, she was going to die.
This was a different feeling from when Zuri tempted death by provoking her father. If her father wanted to kill her, he would make it quick, because he would be too angry to drag out the torture, but it was different with these shifters. She didn’t know what they were going to do to her.
The woods were so dark as the moonlight couldn’t penetrate the thick foliage, while the ground was cold and slippery.
Zuri kept running, but she could still feel them. They were so close!
And one of them jumped on her back, slammed her to the ground and bit her hindleg. The scorching pain shot through her body forced her to shift back into her human form. Her dress was completely dirty now.
“What do you want?!” Zuri roared at them. “I will not say anything, so just let me go!”
She stood up and attempted to leave, even though she knew she couldn’t go anywhere without their permission.
One of the beasts leaped in front of her. She couldn’t see clearly and wasn’t sure about its fur color, but as a warrior, she knew that this beast was obviously bigger and fiercer than hers.
The beast then shifted back into his human form and Zuri recognized him. He was Gayle. She met him a few times when she visited Lumicen city with Khaos. He was also the one who brought the white wolf cub to the Blackthorne pack house for her.
“What do you want?! I will not say anything, now step back!”
“Please, come with me, Luna Zuri.”
“No. I will go back to the palace and I will not tell a single soul about what I just saw. Now, move!” Zuri took a step aside, but Gayle blocked her again. “What is it? Do you want to drag me back and kill me because I have seen something that I shouldn’t have?”
Gayle didn’t budge, he didn’t even look scared to face Zuri’s anger. “That’s for the Alpha to decide.” They were instructed to capture her alive and not to harm her.
“Your alpha owes me.” Zuri reminded him about that.
“In that case, please come with me.”
Zuri looked around, it was dark, but she could spot two beasts lurking behind the trees and felt the rest of them quickly surrounding her. She had no chance to escape, let alone overpower battle hardened warriors like Gayle and the others.
Her best chance was to talk with Khaos. She would remind him about his debt.
Without saying a word, Zuri turned around and traced back to the clearing, where Khaos had been waiting for her and that man was still hanging from the tree with a piece of wood serving as the harsh line between life and death.
But this time, Zuri spotted Caiden too. The gamma was nothing like his usual self. He was quiet and his expression was unreadable. Soon, her eyes met with Khaos’ gray ones again. She couldn’t fathom what was in his mind and for a moment, they just stared at each other.
The hanging man kept making muffled noises behind his gag.
