Chapter 32 – His Replica Mate

“Okay, that’s good. Let’s head out. We should be there before the other men arrive,” I tell him.

We both get up, walk out of the house, and into my truck.

“So, did Lena say anything about the kids?” he asks as I start the car.

“You mean about me being their father?” I ask him, and he nods. “No, she’s not going to give up that information easily, not until she trusts me. But she did talk about them today, pretty easily, without me asking many questions. I think she’s confused,” I tell him.

“How so?” he asks.

“I mean, it’s clear to anyone with eyes that Luke is mine. But when I saw him, I didn’t say anything, and that has her confused,” I tell him.

“Yeah, she probably thought you’d come up to her with accusations about keeping them away from you,” he tells me.

“That’s true, and two to three years ago, I definitely would have done that, but I’m not the same man I was back then. That man would have had no chance of winning Lena back,” I tell him.

“Yeah, you were a grade-A asshole,” he says, and I can’t help but smile.

“Hey! I wasn’t that bad,” I tell him.

“Yes, you were. But because you’re our Alpha, no one could say it to your face,” he tells me.

He’s right; I was a jerk, but at the time, I didn’t care because I had Scarlett by my side. But after a while, it was like the blinds were removed from my eyes, and I could finally see the light.

“Also, I forgot to tell you, when we get there, before the others arrive, I want us to see if we can catch a scent. Lena said she felt like somebody-or something-was watching her, and it felt sinister,” I tell him.

“Alright, but is it just me, or does it feel like this disease hitting our pack isn’t the full story? Like there’s something else going on?” he asks me.

“It’s like you read my mind.”

Lena’s pov-

I’ve been in the lab for hours now, staring at the results on the screen, hoping that maybe the longer I look at it, the more it will make sense to me, but it’s not working.

Frustrated, I get up from my chair and take off my mask and gloves.

“Arghhhhh!” I scream. I’ve never been so stumped and frustrated in my life.

“This can’t be right. I mean, the elements and the arrangements, they’re all wrong,” Emmett says more to himself as he stares at the screen.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before, and it’s the same with Brie’s tests; the results are also inconclusive. What exactly is this disease?” I ask myself, and as I continue staring at the screen, a light bulb goes off in my head. It finally clicks.

“That’s it,” I say, letting out a sigh of relief.

“What is it?” Emmett asks, looking very confused.

“We’ve been treating this disease like any normal one, but that’s where we were wrong. It’s not like any other disease we’ve come across before,” I tell him.

“OK, go on,” he says.

“First of all, we’re not dealing with humans. Werewolves are supernatural beings, so our bodies and genes are different. This disease has been engineered to target werewolves, which also means that this isn’t just science; it also has an element of magic involved,” I explain, and he looks at me like I’m crazy.

“Magic? You can’t be serious,” Emmett tells me.

“I’m serious as a heart attack. I mean, is it so hard to believe that supernatural creatures are made from magic? That explains the inconclusive tests and the unidentified elements. If we’re going to find a cure, we’ll need a witch or a warlock,” I tell him.

“And where are you going to find one?” he asks.

“That’s the problem. Witches and warlocks aren’t like werewolves who stay in packs. They’re more reserved and introverted, and most of them hate our kind. Fuck! This would’ve been so much easier if there were no magic involved,” I sit back down in my chair and run my hands through my hair.

“This would also explain the sludge. Someone did this on purpose-poisoned their land and, in the process, poisoned the people living on it. I have to talk to Leo immediately. In the meantime, I need you to continue working on the samples. Write down everything you find. Even if there’s an element of magic to this, we still need to figure out the science part,” I tell him.

“Of course, I’ll get right on it,” he replies.

I thank him and leave the lab. It’s been hours since Leo dropped me off. I think about going to his house first, but then I remember he said he would head back to the land with some of his men, so I get into my car and drive over there.

By the time I arrive, I expect to see cars parked around, but I only see Leo’s truck. Luckily, he and Zeo are standing by the trunk, so I don’t have to look around to find them.

I stop my car, turn off the engine, and get out. They both stop talking and turn to face me.

“Hey, stranger,” Zeo smirks at me.

“Hey yourself,” I reply. A few seconds later, he has me in a bear hug, and then he puts me down.

“I feel like I’ve barely seen you since you got back,” he says, and I can see the hurt in his eyes.

“I know, I’ve been busy. But we need to catch up, and you need to meet the kids,” I tell him, and he breaks into a huge smile.

“It’s a date,” he says, throwing his arm over my shoulder.

“Hmmm.” Leo clears his throat, drawing our attention to him.

“Why are you back here?” he asks, his eyes fixed on Zeo, and he looks like he’s ready to murder him.

I need his full attention, so I step back out of Zeo’s arms. The idiot has a smirk on his face; he did that on purpose to get a reaction out of Leo.

“I came looking for you. I examined the sludge and the other specimen we took, and they all came back inconclusive-same with Brie’s labs,” I tell him, and I can see the anger and frustration clear on his face.

“So what does that mean?” Zeo asks.
